Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intelligence of School Children How Children Differ in Ability, the Use of Mental Tests in School Grading, and the Proper Education of Exceptional Children The book has been written primarily for the grade teacher, and as an introduction to the study of The Measurement of Intelligence. Its greatest usefulness probably will be as a book for Teacher Study Clubs and State Reading Circles, and as an introductory textbook for students in normal schools. A careful study'of this book by the teachers of a city or State would contribute wonderfully to the intelligent han dling, of children, and the study of it by prospective teachers would open up entirely new conceptions as to educational procedure, and would lead to a far more satisfactory direction of the exceptional children found in every school. The book will also prove of much value to parents interested in the education of their children, and especially to those whose children vary much in either direction from the normal. Its purpose is to illustrate the large individual differences in original endowment which exist among school children and to show the practical bearing of these differences upon the everyday problems of classroom management and school administration. It does not treat, except incidentally, the psychological principles underlying intelligence tests. Some of these problems the writer has touched upon elsewhere. The technique of giving the tests of the revised Binet scale and the general significance of mental tests for education have been set forth in some detail in another volume of this series, The Measurement of Intelligence, which should be read in connection with the present volume. The writer's present aim is the more practical one of showing how the results of mental tests may be put to everyday use in the grade classification and in the educational guidance of school children"--Preface. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans take it for granted that a thirteen-year-old in the fifth grade is "behind schedule," that "teenagers who marry "too early" are in for trouble, and that a seventy-five-year-old will be pleased at being told, "You look young for your age." Did an awareness of age always dominate American life? Howard Chudacoff reveals that our intense age consciousness has developed only gradually since the late nineteenth century. In so doing, he explores a wide range of topics, including demographic change, the development of pediatrics and psychological testing, and popular music from the early 1800s until now. "Throughout our lifetimes American society has been age-conscious. But this has not always been the case. Until the mid-nineteenth century, Americans showed little concern with age. The one-room schoolhouse was filled with students of varied ages, and children worked alongside adults.... [This is] a lively picture of the development of age consciousness in urban middle-class culture." --Robert H. Binstock, The New York Times Book Review "A fresh perspective on a century of social and cultural development."--Michael R. Dahlin, American Historical Review

Book excerpt: This volume, much like its companion text Cognition in Special Children, focuses on intellectual and motivational processes that characterize individuals at the extremes of human talent. The aim is to understand more about exceptional children: how they are like and unlike other children, and what intellectual and motivational processes best explain their delayed or accelerated performance. The link between exceptionality and intelligence is examined from three perspectives: the role of intelligence theories and tests in the diagnosis and classification of retarded, learning disabled, and gifted children and adolescents; the use of intelligence theory to guide educational programming; and the importance of special populations for constructing, revising, and assessing new models of intelligence.

Book excerpt: This practical guide to the intellectual assessment of children and adolescents in schools is widely used, both by practicing school psychologists and by instructors and students in graduate school psychology programs. This second edition includes evidence-based best practices for the use and interpretation of intelligence tests in decision-making by counselors, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. While the assessment of intelligence has long been mandated by law for eligibility determination for special education and related services, there is widespread disagreement about the use and interpretation of intelligence tests. This is the only intellectual assessment book to address this issue by critically reviewing the scientific evidence regarding the critical role played by intelligence tests in the schools for the determination of eligibility for special education and related services, alongside the plethora of practical information. New to this edition: New chapter that reviews the methodology used in research on interventions that target cognitive abilities, and the results of that research, as well as literature on aptitude-by-treatment interactions in the cognitive domain New chapter on the WISC-V, its history, and an in-depth description of its organization, materials, and scores, for both the traditional administration format and the new Q-interactive format New section titled, “Where in the Brain is Intelligence?” as well as expanded discussions of contemporary training programs designed to increase intelligence Revised Screening Tool for Assessment forms to address English language proficiency and acculturation Updated entries for four intelligence tests and added an entry for the Detroit Test of Learning Abilities, Fifth Edition (Hammill, McGhee, & Ehrler, 2018). Added sections focused on test accommodations and behavior management during testing Recommendations for incorporating emergent assessment technology (e.g., tablet-based test administration). New content addressing different styles of reports as well as a summary of new recommendations from the recently published Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition (2019). Review of the most recent ethical guidelines from the American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exceptional Children Fon many years I have felt that the major difficulty faced by the child who differs markedly from others of his age and sex is not so much the fact of difference as it is the feeling of difference for which the objective facts are but partially responsible. Equally and in many cases more important for the child's general adjust ment and happiness is the manner in which others react to his exceptional characteristics. Too much admiration and praise may cause the bright child to regard himself as so superior to his mates that he looks upon them with covert or openly expressed scorn. He withdraws from their companionship as they from his. Thus his brilliance becomes more and more closely confined to the narrow range of abstract intelligence; it does not extend into the areas of social and emotional behavior. He does not become more tactful, more sympathetic, more self-controlled, or even more honest and trustworthy. Yet under other conditions, his superior ability might have been brought to bear upon all these and other desirable areas of conduct as well as upon academic matters.
