Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intellectual and Moral Development of the Present Age I can assure you, to be a solitary one in my life time; and it is also an embarrassing one, because not in unison with my professional habits and ob jects. On the occasion, however, of my first judicial visit to this town, in last October, I received an un expected and earnest request from the President and Council of the Literary and Philosophical Society of this place, to read a paper before the Society, and on any subject which I might select. After much consideration, I expressed my willingness to do so, and chose the subject now before us. Some time afterwards, I was honoured by receiving a unani mous resolution of the President and Council, soliciting me to take steps, by anticipation, to commit the paper to the press, in order that it may be perused, at as early a period as possible, by those who cannot hear the paper read - with a view to its extended usefulness. I own that I was not a little affected by so signal a mark of confidence; and have already, as far as I have been able, com plied with the request. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Intellectual and Moral Relations Tun Reader having just finished a critical perusal of my title-page, his curiosity, or, perhaps, some motive even less compli mentary, may put him upon inquiring what one, whose business it is to repair the body, has got to do with the mind? Or how one, whose profession is at least in part mechanical, and altogether, as it may appear, averse to specula tion, could presume to interfere with a depart ment so much above his proper sphere? It must be allowed that there is some reason in these exceptions; but I will reply to them by claiming an apology from the customary practice of men, which is, first, to project and to execute their designs, and afterwards inquire how far they were qualified for the undertaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral and Intellectual Education In most works on Education, children are repte sented as little culprits, with innumerable faults and vices to be corrected. My views are quite different. Undoubtedly we are all born in sin; children come into the world with an original stain, which may account for the natural tendency to evil: but childrenare also endowed with noble qualities, containing the seeds of the most elevated sentiments, and virtues. Instead therefore of considering the child as a crimi nal, ever ready to err, and requiring constant severity, I have considered him as the noble descendant of a chosen, though fallen race, whose dignity should be restored. Book excerpt: Excerpt from You and I, or Moral, Intellectual and Social Culture It is believed that the work is wholly original and unique, that nothing approaching it, either in form or scope, was ever before attempted. In preparing it, the publishers have, at great expense of time, patience and money, called to their aid those men and women who, by reason of their intellectual training and high positions in society, seemed best fitted to. Lead an upward tendency in the moral, intellectual and social training of the people. We trust we have succeeded in pro viding for the public a work that needs no apology for its appearance; but one that will be a welcome visitor to every home where worthy books are to be found. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral and Religious Challenge of Our Times: The Guiding Principle in Human Development; Reverence for Personality As its double title indicates, this book seeks to enable the thoughtful reader to orient himself morally and religiously, with reference to all the main features of the modern world; and to give him, at the same time, a guiding clue in that orientation, The aim involves a wide survey; but the changes of our time have been so large and so significant, that it seems particularly worth while to attempt their comprehensive review. In our thinking, in our living, and in our working - in all alike - we need not only intelligent acquaintance with the world conditions in the midst of which we are, but thoughtful understanding of them. And this holds for the nation as well as for the individual. Our problems are not those of any other time. We need to know just what they are, what peculiar difficulties are involved, and what special helps are available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct, Vol. 1 of 2 During eleven years I have worked at this book, collecting its materials in more or less desultory fashion in leisure of other work, but of late I have been able to devote myself almost exclusively to it. Nevertheless, a sense of depression attends the con trast between the dreams of fifteen years ago and the tame reality which is all that these years have been able to produce. Cheerfully enough would I spend another four years, if I saw, in any reasonable faith, a hope of thereby making it appreciably approach that early ideal. Yet it is not mine to judge it. And I leave it to find its own degree of usefulness. Sincerity of effort may have power to atone for much of inherent feebleness.
