This book contains five sections that may be used as teaching or supplementary units. While building a better understanding of maths concepts, students will also develop such skills as brainstorming, listening, predicting, observing, speaking and illustrating. Students learn how to collect and organise different types of data, create graphs and use graphs to interpret data. Units are comprised of 2-3 activities and include the year level, time frame, suggested software, materials needed, assessment/evaluation activities, and Internet addresses of a maths site(s) with more information on each topic. Topics also covered are: Statistics and data, shape and place, Measurement, Probability and Chance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years technology has exploded into our lives and it is now finding its way into the classroom. The purpose of this study was to explore high school math teachers' perspectives about the integration of technology in their classroom. Three key questions guided this study. How does the integration of technology impact teachers' instructional practices? What are their attitudes about the use of technology in the classroom? What do teachers feel is the relationship between the integration of technology and student learning? High school math teachers were interviewed and observed in order to collect data. The findings indicated that teachers are using technology in several new ways including using document cameras to show student work and interactive software to create interactive presentations. The teachers felt that the benefits of technology use included saving time and enhancing presentations with color and movement. The also indicated that students may get a deeper understanding of the material presented because of the visual aspect the technology brings. This might result to an increase in students' motivation, on the other hand, teachers expressed their desire to have more training and support. They wanted specific training on how to use the technoloyg and also training on how they could integrate the technology into their curriculum. It appears that, schools and school districts should provide a better support system in order to help teachers be more successful with their technology integration. The training should center on how to use the technology as well as how to integrate the technology into their curriculum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematics curriculum – what mathematics is taught, to whom it is taught, and when it is taught – is the bedrock to understanding what mathematics students can, could, and should learn. Today’s digital technology influences the mathematics curriculum in two quite different ways. One influence is on the delivery of mathematics through hardware such as desktops, laptops, and tablets. Another influence is on the doing of mathematics using software available on this hardware, but also available on the internet, calculators, or smart phones. These developments, rapidly increasing in their availability and decreasing in their cost, raise fundamental questions regarding a mathematics curriculum that has traditionally been focused on paper-and-pencil work and taught in many places as a set of rules to be practiced and learned. This volume presents the talks given at a conference held in 2014 at the University of Chicago, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum. The speakers – experts from around the world and inside the USA – were asked to discuss one or more of the following topics: • changes in the nature and creation of curricular materials available to students • transformations in how students learn and how they demonstrate their learning • rethinking the role of the teacher and how students and teachers interact within a classroom and across distances from each other The result is a set of articles that are interesting and captivating, and challenge us to examine how the learning of mathematics can and should be affected by today’s technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have changed the ways that mathematics are taught and learned. Is your institution taking advantage of what today's technology offers? With contributions from researchers and practitioners alike, Using Information Technology in Mathematics Education explores the impact of the computer on the curriculum, the teaching and learning of mathematics, and the professional development of teachers, both pre-service and in-service. As editor James Tooke states: “The connection between mathematics and the computer is obvious. Elementary notions of mathematics gave rise to the computer; advanced notions gave it a more powerful state. As the computer advanced, it expanded mathematics, allowing the creation of further branches of the field; for instance, fractal geometry had no reality until the advent of high-speed computers.” In its look at the relationship between mathematics, the computer, and mathematics education, Using Information Technology in Mathematics Education: addresses the computer as a vehicle for teaching calculus at Texas A&M includes reports from several programs that have utilized the computer when teaching mathematics at lower levels of content than calculus such as intermediate algebra and geometry examines the computer's role in student learning probability discusses the use of computers in the professional development of teachers explores ways to use computers to reduce mathematics anxiety Using Information Technology in Mathematics Education examines the history and impact of computers in mathematics and mathematics education--from the early, crude computer-assisted instruction efforts through LOGO software for elementary schools, through MAPLE for the university, to the Web-based calculus courses now being offered by outstanding universities. Use it to facilitate learning and teacher growth in your institution!

Book excerpt: This book contributes to both mathematical problem solving and the communication of mathematics by students, and the role of personal and home technologies in learning beyond school. It does this by reporting on major results and implications of the Problem@Web project that investigated youngsters’ mathematical problem solving and, in particular, their use of digital technologies in tackling, and communicating the results of their problem solving, in environments beyond school. The book has two focuses: Mathematical problem solving skills and strategies, forms of representing and expressing mathematical thinking, technological-based solutions; and students ́ and teachers ́ perspectives on mathematics learning, especially school compared to beyond-school mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fundamental reassessment of mathematics education in the digital era. It constitutes a new mindset of how information and knowledge are processed by introducing new interconnective and interactive pedagogical approaches. Math education is catching up on technology, as courses and materials use digital sources and resources more and more. The time has come to evaluate this new dynamic, which transcends all previous use of ancillary devices to supplement classroom math instruction. Interactivity and interconnectivity with the online world of math and math texts (such as television programs and internet sites) can be integrated with our traditional modes for delivery of math instruction. This book looks at how this integration can unfold practically by applying these relevant pedagogical principles to elementary topics such as numeration, arithmetic, algebra, story problems, combinatorics, and basic probability theory. The book further exemplifies how mathematics can be connected to topics in popular culture, information technologies, and other such domains.
