Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration of Responsibility: And Other Papers Now here is a secret known only to those who labor long and diligently over their responsibilities. The most thrilling experience in life is found in matching our wit, our courage, our capacity against or shall I say fitting it into? Our duty, that which we owe to ourselves, without regard, for the moment, to our duty toward others. It is as nor mal for human life to linger in the embrace of responsibility as for the rose bush to strike its roots into the moist soil. Out of it comes inspira tion for further responsibility. By doing we be come enabled to do. The response of the will to the call of obligation becomes the opportunity of God to enlarge our capacity. He breathes into us fresh wisdom, new courage, added strength. His breath is life. And He can give us life only when We choose to live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving U.S. history into the larger fabric of world history, the contributors to Crossing Empires de-exceptionalize the American empire, placing it in a global transimperial context. They draw attention to the breadth of U.S. entanglements with other empires to illuminate the scope and nature of American global power as it reached from the Bering Sea to Australia and East Africa to the Caribbean. With case studies ranging from the 1830s to the late twentieth century, the contributors address topics including diplomacy, governance, anticolonialism, labor, immigration, medicine, religion, and race. Their transimperial approach—whether exemplified in examinations of U.S. steel corporations partnering with British imperialists to build the Ugandan railway or the U.S. reliance on other empires in its governance of the Philippines—transcends histories of interimperial rivalries and conflicts. In so doing, the contributors illuminate the power dynamics of seemingly transnational histories and the imperial origins of contemporary globality. Contributors. Ikuko Asaka, Oliver Charbonneau, Genevieve Clutario, Anne L. Foster, Julian Go, Michel Gobat, Julie Greene, Kristin L. Hoganson, Margaret D. Jacobs, Moon-Ho Jung, Marc-William Palen, Nicole M. Phelps, Jay Sexton, John Soluri, Stephen Tuffnell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Civilizational Imperatives, Oliver Charbonneau reveals the little-known history of the United States' colonization of the Philippines' Muslim South in the early twentieth century. Often referred to as Moroland, the Sulu Archipelago and the island of Mindanao were sites of intense US engagement and laboratories of colonial modernity during an age of global imperialism. Exploring the complex relationship between colonizer and colonized from the late nineteenth century until the eve of the Second World War, Charbonneau argues that American power in the Islamic Philippines rested upon a transformative vision of colonial rule. Civilization, protection, and instruction became watchwords for US military officers and civilian administrators, who enacted fantasies of racial reform among the diverse societies of the region. Violence saturated their efforts to remake indigenous politics and culture, embedding itself into governance strategies used across four decades. Although it took place on the edges of the Philippine colonial state, this fraught civilizing mission did not occur in isolation. It shared structural and ideological connections to US settler conquest in North America and also borrowed liberally from European and Islamic empires. These circuits of cultural, political, and institutional exchange—accessed by colonial and anticolonial actors alike—gave empire in the Southern Philippines its hybrid character. Civilizational Imperatives is a story of colonization and connection, reaching across nations and empires in its examination of a Southeast Asian space under US sovereignty. It presents an innovative new portrait of the American empire's global dimensions and the many ways they shaped the colonial encounter in the Southern Philippines.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “He Can Who Thinks He Can, and Other Papers on Success in Life” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Through the examples of successful people in history who all battled their demons and failures, Orison Swett Marden inspires readers to overcome their difficulties too by cultivating positive attitude. Spread over eighteen chapters and a conversational way of writing, this book would surely interest those who are looking to achieve self-confidence, power and success. Excerpt: “Believe in yourself; feel that you are to dominate your surroundings. Resolve that you will be the master and not the slave of circumstances. This very assertion of superiority; this assumption of power; this affirmation of your ability to succeed,—the attitude that claims success as an inalienable birthright,—will strengthen the whole man and give great added power to the combination of faculties which doubt, fear and lack of confidence undermine. Self-confidence marshals all one's faculties and twists their united strength into one mighty achievement cable. It carries conviction. It makes other people believe in us. What has not been accomplished through its miraculous power!” Dr. Orison Swett Marden (1848-1924) was an American inspirational author who wrote about achieving success in life. In his books he discussed the common-sense principles and virtues that make for a well-rounded, successful life.
