Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. The author desires to make the fullest acknowledgment to those of whose work he has availed himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Insects Injurious to Orchard and Bush Fruits: With Means of Prevention and Remedy In the present volume I have endeavoured to collect into a convenient form for reference the most important points of information which we possess regarding the life-histories and habits of the insects of which the attacks are commonly injurious to a serious extent to hardy fruit in this country, together with notes of methods of prevention and remedy which have been found serviceable at a paying rate. Some of the attacks mentioned have long been known of, but there are few if any of these of which we have not gained some additional information during the past few years, and of many of the others we have only lately become possessed of the whole life-history; whilst others, again, have lately shown themselves as perfect scourges (in our present large scale of fruit growing) which even within the last four or five years were wholly unknown to us as fruit pests. In the following pages (as temperatures and weather influences have great effect on insect life and number of yearly broods), I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to give the information from observations in this country sent to myself during the past twenty-one years, and published as received in my successive Annual Reports; these notes being now condensed into a continuous account of each infestation, but as far as possible in the words of the various contributors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Insects For nearly twenty years Professor Slingerland, as Assistant Entomologist of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, devoted the greater part of his time to studying the insect problems encountered by the fruit-growers of New York State. The results of some of these studies were published as bulletins of the Station, but a large amount of material remained unpublished. It was the idea of making this material available to other workers and at the same time bringing together in con nected form all the more important known facts concerning the insect enemies of our deciduous fruits, that led Professor Slinger land in the fall of 1908 to begin writing this book. During the few remaining months of his life he worked rapidly, and in spite Of failing health wrote accounts of more than one-half Of the apple insects and some others, mostly scale insects. After Professor Slingerland's death in March, 1909, I collected and preserved the manuscript, thinking that it might be possible to publish it without much additional work. While the treat ment of each insect was complete in itself, the Whole was so dis connected that this plan had to be abandoned. Accordingly, in the summer of 1910 I undertook the task of completing the book, following Professor Slingerland's outline. In doing so, I have made free use of his unpublished notes, and most of the illustra tions are from his photographs. Some of the most destructive insects have been treated at some length, notably the fluted or cottony scale In the preparation of this treatise, the works of Professor Riley, Professor Com stock, and that of the late Matthew Cooke were freely made use of. I trust that this little publication will be judged charitably, as neither time nor knowledge has been sufficient to do justice to the undertaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insect and Other Allied Pests: Of Orchard, Bush and Hothouse Fruits and Their Prevention and Treatment This book is written solely with the object of placing before fruit-growers, gardeners and amateurs an account of the insects, mites and worms which attack and cause disease amongst fruit trees, bushes, etc., both in the open and under glass. Some mention is made of methods of prevention, even if they give only partial relief, and also of the various forms of treatment that have been adopted to destroy the insect and other enemies. The volume is by no means complete, but it has reached such proportions that it is impossible to give all the information it was hoped to. Nevertheless, all the known pests to date and all those insect and allied creatures which have been recorded as having done damage are mentioned. My thanks must be expressed to Mr. Robert Newstead, Mr. C. O. Waterhouse and Mr. W. F. Emptage for much valuable help during the writing of the work, also to so many fruit-growers that it would be invidious to mention names. The photographs have mainly been taken for me by Mr. Edenden, and a few have been prepared by Mr. Blakey, Mr. Hammond, Mr. Tonge and Mr. Rintoul. Professor Felt of New York, Mr. Claude Fuller of Natal and Mr. Newstead have also kindly sent me photographs of Scale Insects and Fruit Fly damage. A few figures have also been reproduced from my Reports issued from the S. E. Agricultural College. The drawings have mostly been prepared by Mr. Horace Knight. The results demonstrate for all practical purposes that this Species is not injurious except in the adult condition; a fact that has previously been surmised, but, which had not been brought out with sufficient clearness in earlier investigations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orchard Insects of the Pacific Northwest and Their Control In the orchards of the Pacific Northwest insects take a toll of many million dollars a year. In Washington and Oregon alone the value of the annual fruit crop is about 100 million dollars, and the cost of combating insect pests and the losses due to infested fruit amount to about one-tenth this figure. Knowledge of the insects found in these orchards - their life history and habits and how to con trol them - is of vital interest to fruit growers. This circular gives such information about the most important insects found in the orchards of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and western Montana. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Insect Enemies of Fruit and Fruit Trees No other portion of the agriculture of our country is at this time receiving so much attention as that devoted to the culture of Fruit. The growing of young trees in nurseries, as an art, has been greatly improved, and the supply of such trees is enormous. Books have been prepared by men of eminent ability and mature experience, giving all necessary information for the management of the orchard; and the fruits that have been proved valuable have been carefully figured and described. Some men are devoting much attention to the improvement of kinds, and with most satisfactory results. Fruits that were highly esteemed a few years ago are now superseded, and amateurs hope to identify their names with better sorts; and why not '3 There seems to be no limit set by nature to improvement in this direction. The Seckel Pear was found growing wild in a hedgerow. Probably the blossom that produced the pear, from the seed of which that tree grew, had been visited by a bee dusty with pollen from another blossom, and thus a germ was fertilized, which in time brought forth this hybrid of such surpassing excellence. The science of Botany teaches us that we can hybridize as well as bees, and improvements in fruits are now brought about as the designs of men rather than as the accidents of insects. Grafting, budding, and the propagation by cuttings give us the means of multiplying these better kinds with a rapidity characteristic of the age. 'but with all these signs of progress, the supply of fruit is far short of the wants of the people. The prices are often extravagant to the consumers, and do not always remunerate the producers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Destructive Insects of Victoria, Vol. 3: With Notes on the Methods to Be Adopted to Check and Extirpate Them Insects of Victoria has been prepared on similar lines to those indicated in the preface to Parts I. And II. As the work of publishing a complete account of the many pests to which our plants are subjected progressed, it was found almost impossible to adhere strictly to the former plan of bringing the insects attacking various fruit trees together, as new pests are continually making their appearance, which necessitates the more important kinds being dealt with first. The large demand for the two previous parts points to the conclusion that the work is welcomed by those engaged in rural pursuits, in whose interest it has been prepared, and, by permission of the Victorian Department of Agriculture, Part IV., the plates for which are nearly ready, will be published as soon as possible, and as the work is not written for scientific entomologists, analysis of the parts of the various insects figured has not been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Fruit Insects in Mediterranean Countries In Spain, during July, 1913, the Mediterranean fruit-fly was found in peaches and oranges, but in very limited numbers. The extent of infestation in peaches, its favorite food, amounted to only a fraction of 1 per cent. It is true that most of the peaches had not yet matured, and there is no doubt that a heavier infestation occurred later in the season. Many of the pears, apples, and other fruits were examined.
