Book Synopsis The Economics of Vertical Disintegration by : D. G. McFetridge
Download or read book The Economics of Vertical Disintegration written by D. G. McFetridge and published by Vancouver, B.C., Canada : Fraser Institute. This book was released on 1988 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: The fundamental question addressed by this study is the extent to which service functions formerly performed within industrial firms have been contracted out. If the service sector has grown primarily because manufacturing and other industries have contracted out janitorial, security and other business services, then there in not much economic significance to service sector growth. This also implies that observed declines in manufacturing employment may also represent nothing more than inter-sectoral shifts in the location of employment. This study breaks new ground in developing a series of statistical approaches to the measurement of contracting out. Based on a solid theoretical framework, three new empirical measures of contracting out are presented. The results vary somewhat by method but the overall conclusion is that contracting out is an important phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This text seeks to provide an introduction to issues of land use and the economic tools that are used to resolve land-use conflicts. In particular, tools of economic analysis are used to address allocation of land among alternative uses in such a way that the welfare of society is enhanced. Thus, the focus is on what is best for society and not what is best for an individual, a particular group of individuals, or a particular constituency. What this text seeks to provide is a balanced and just approach to decision-making concerning allocation of land.' -- from the Introduction

Book excerpt: This study, originally published in 1972, examines the connections between human society and the rest of the universe that are attributable to economic activity. These include the inputs from the environment to industry, such as oxygen, used in the combustion of mineral fuels. Also included are the industrial outputs which are fed back into the environment in the form of waste products. An attempt will be made to establish functional relations between the extent and character of economic activity and the flow of materials in both directions between the economy and the environment. This title will be of interest to students of environmental and natural resource economics.
Book Synopsis Employment Performance in the Knowledge-based Economy by : Surendra Gera
Download or read book Employment Performance in the Knowledge-based Economy written by Surendra Gera and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing consensus among academics and policy-makers that most industrialized economies are increasingly becoming "knowledge-based." Knowledge, both as an input and an output, is seen a key source of long-term growth and job creation. The study examines the relationship between structural change and the employment performance of the Canadian economy over the period 1971 to 1991, using Statistics Canada's input/output model. Though largely based on previous work by the OECD (1992), the study employs more timely data and a finer industrial disaggregation (111 industries as opposed to 33), and explores more closely the employment implications of the emergence of the knowledge- based economy.
Book Synopsis Topics in Classical Micro- and Macroeconomics by : Peter Flaschel
Download or read book Topics in Classical Micro- and Macroeconomics written by Peter Flaschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-14 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on Classical micro- and macrodynamics includes revised versions of papers which were written between 1983 and 2000, some jointly with co-authors, and it supplements them with recent work on the issues which are raised and treated in them. It attempts to demonstrate to the reader that themes of Classical economics, in particular in the tradition of Smith, Ricardo and Marx, can be synthesized into a coherent whole, from the perspective of formal model building. This is accomplished by means of mathematical techniques which, on the one hand, provide a consistent accounting framework (labor values and prices of p- duction) as point of reference for Classical micro- and macro-dynamics and which, on the other hand, attempt to apply these accounting schemes – or suitable ext- sions of them – by showing their usefulness as tools of analysis of the implications of technological change (labor values) and as potential tools for understanding the dynamics of market prices and of income distribution around their centers of gravity (production prices and the wage-pro?t curve).
