Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inns of Court: An Historical Description of the Inns of Court and Chancery of England One can step aside from busy, modern Fleet Street, the famous journalistic centre of London, and in a minute he in the midst of stately mediaeval buildings, spacious lawns and flower gardens, and sombre old quadrangles having all the appearances of a university town in the middle ages. This is the Temple where are situated two of the four ancient Inns of Court, Middle Temple, and Inner Temple. These Inns of Court with the two others, Lincoln's Inn in Chancery Lane, and Gray's Inn in Holborn, are voluntary non-corporation legal societies seated in London, having their origin some time about the end of the thirteenth Or the begin ning of the fourteenth century, and possessing, by customary law, the exclusive privilege of calling, or admitting candidates to the Bar. They may be re garded as colleges which together make up the official legal university of England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Lectures on the Inns of Court and of Chancery: Delivered in Middle Temple Hall During Easter and Trinity Terms, 1912 IT was the ancient custom of the Middle Temple for each Reader in turn to give read ings and to hold moots in Hall. The Lent Reader for 1912 was anxious to revive this ancient custom, and his brother Benchers were good enough to concur. It was decided that six Lectures should be given on the Inns of Court and of Chancery, as it was felt that many students and even some barristers knew very little of the history of the Inn to which they belonged and of the great men connected with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Early History and Academic Discipline of the Inns of Court and Chancery: Delivered Before the Benchers at Lincoln's Inn, on the 20th November, 1851 But we have other evidence besides that of Fortescue, showing that the inhabitants of the Inns of Court, and more especially of the Inns of Chancery, were numerous, and, I fear, somewhat disorderly. They were in fact formidable by their turbulence to their more peaceful neighbours, the citizens of London, with whom they waged what would now be. Called a war of town and gown. In the year 1454, a pitched battle was fought between the two communities in Fleet Street. Who chiefly distinguished themselves by their valour on this occasion does not appear; neither can we discover on which side victory was declared. But I am reluctantly constrained to state that the heads of three legal colleges, (the Principal of Clifford's Inn, the Principal of Furnival's Inn, and the Principal of Barnard's Inn, ) probably ringleaders, were tried, convicted, and sent prisoners to Hartford Castle. After such a recital, we may perhaps feel some hesitation in pronouncing the time of Fortescue the golden age of these ancient judicial establishments. Fortescue does not explain the mode of study pursued in the Inns of Court, or in the Inns of Chancery. That it was judicious we may infer from the great confluence of students. And certainly the teaching of elementary knowledge in the Inns of Chancery, and higher science in the Inns of Court, was a very rational distribution of legal education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men-at-the-Bar: A Biographical Hand-List of the Members of the Various Inns of Court, Including Her Majesty's Judges, Etc Biography in the present day is tending, like other studies, to become more and more specialized. Already dictionaries of universal biography are being everywhere abandoned for those which are to deal with the biography of particular nations. But even so, the mines of biographical materials have become so much more accessible within the present generation, that such a work, for instance, as the noble Dictionary of National Biography, of which the two volumes have already appeared, seems likely to extend far beyond the limits that could at first sight have appeared possible. It may, therefore, fairly be contended that the more restricted the scope of the biographer, the more creditably his work is likely to be accomplished, and that if he confines himself to a special class, requiring special information, he may be enabled, by making himself master of that information, to produce a work of peculiar value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of English Legal History A year ago it became my duty as one of the Readers to the Council of Legal Education, to deliver, at short notice, a course of lectures on Royal Justice in this country. The information which had to be gathered from many books, some out of print, others of great price, few to be found except in great libraries, I now place at the disposal of those who take, at the least, a passing interest in the subject. Inaccuracies and inelegancies I am sure that I have not entirely avoided. If on some points I have spoken without certainty, it should be remembered that our information is not yet, and may never be, complete. On some topics, such as the Justices of the Forest and of the Jews, I have chosen to be silent and await the promised records of the Selden Society. I desire here to acknowledge my great debt to the Rolls Series, the Acts of the Privy Council, and the invaluable volumes of the Selden Society. To none of the learned editors of that Series do I owe more than to Professor Maitland, to whom all scholars must wish complete restoration to health, and whose unwearied energy has illumined so many dark places of the law.
