Book Synopsis The Holiness Revival of the Nineteenth Century by : Melvin Easterday Dieter
Download or read book The Holiness Revival of the Nineteenth Century written by Melvin Easterday Dieter and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition expands and updates the only general interpretation of the rise and influence of perfectionist revivalism in America and Europe. Fifteen years of expanding research on the holiness movement reinforce this volume's continuing seminal value to cultural and social research. The new concluding essay describes the history of the revival through the turn of the century. This book expands our understanding of the fragmentation and coalescence of American religion by analyzing the factors which created numerous new holiness denominations. Dieter also outlines the historical and theological factors that separate this largely Wesleyan and Methodist wing of evangelicalism from the fundamentalism of Reformed evangelicals. The identification of such nuances will prove especially helpful to those struggling with the extreme diversity in American religion, especially in evangelicalism. For students and scholars of American religious movements as well as students of the feminist, temperance, abolitionist, and populist movements in American society.

Book Synopsis Singleness of Heart by : Diane Leclerc
Download or read book Singleness of Heart written by Diane Leclerc and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, in light of recent feminist theology on the doctrine of sin, attempts to provide historical support for such feminist considerations. It examines fourth-century church fathers, John Wesley, and Phoebe Palmer as places where an alternative of traditional definitional definition, pride, can be found. Diane Leclerc devotes this study to an important twofold question: "What is the most adequate Christian diagnosis of our fundamental human problem?" and the corollary, " How should we understand the wholeness/holiness that Christianity seeks to promote?". While this interrelated topic is challenging in its own right, she has also chosen to approach it by bringing into dialogue some diverse conversation partners. What makes Leclerc's study so instructive is that no partner in this conversation emerges without some challenge for revision, or without some affirmation of their central concerns.

Book Synopsis Restorationism in the Holiness Movement in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries by : Steven L. Ware
Download or read book Restorationism in the Holiness Movement in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries written by Steven L. Ware and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her 1917 sermon Lost and Restored, Pentecostal evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson claimed that God had given her a vision showing the fall of the Christian Church from its original purity and the gradual restoration of that original purity in successive stages. Using the prophetic images of agricultural blight and recovery in Joel chapter two, she detailed the fall of the church after the apostolic age to its complete corruption in the Middle Ages. Then, beginning with the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, she described the church's gradual restoration to purity and power with the influence of the Reformers, continuing through Wesley and the holiness movement, and culminating with the Pentecostal movement of her own lifetime.

Book Synopsis The Wesleyan Holiness Movement by : Charles Edwin Jones
Download or read book The Wesleyan Holiness Movement written by Charles Edwin Jones and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wesleyan Holiness Movement began out of the teachings of John Wesley, who held that Christ's atonement provided sufficient grace for the believer to live in this world continually loving God and neighbor unconditionally, although the believer's expressions of that love would not be perfect. Since its founding, different movements have been spawned and have interpreted Wesley's doctrine in their own way. The two volumes presented here represent the first installation of a three-part series that greatly expands upon Charles Jones's landmark 1974 work. This work focuses on the Wesleyan Holiness Movement, while the third and fourth volumes have the Keswick Movement and the Holiness Pentecostal Movement as their focal points. This series provides materials for study of doctrine, worship, institutional development and personalities, as well as antecedent and related movements. It will serve to illustrate the history both of the Holiness Movement and the rural-urban transition in which it developed. Theological reconsiderations, realignments, and changes, as well as the nearly exponential growth of the Movement since the book's publication, make these new publications almost absolutely necessary. The guides retain all of the good and strong qualities exhibited in the first edition, and have strengthened them.
