Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

Book Synopsis The Sculpture of Leon Underwood by : Ben Whitworth
Download or read book The Sculpture of Leon Underwood written by Ben Whitworth and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2000 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The twentieth century saw the arrival of numerous innovative and pioneering sculptors. Yet while Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth are frequently touted as the figureheads of modern British sculpture, the contribution made by Leon Underwood has largely been ignored." "Straddling two discrete periods in the development of twentieth-century sculpture, Underwood was a transitional figure who embraced the principles of direct carving developed by artists such as Gill, Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, while maintaining a distance from the later practice of abstraction. His interest in 'primitive' art undoubtedly affected Henry Moore, who studied at Underwood's Brook Green School in London during the 1920s." "Addressing the key stages in Underwood's development as a sculptor, Ben Whitworth unravels the motivations and inspirations that guided the artist's career. The Sculpture of Leon Underwood includes the first catalogue of Underwood's sculptural oeuvre, plus a list of solo and group exhibitions. Aiming to re-establish Underwood as a serious contributor to British twentieth-century sculpture and to stimulate greater awareness of the complexity of British modernism, this book is essential reading for academic and general readers alike."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: William Gear (1915-97) was an abstract painter with an international reputation, Scottish by birth but broadly European in sensibility, and one of only two British artists to be part of the CoBrA Group. (CoBrA was Europe's answer to American Abstract Expressionism - a short-lived but explosive expressionist movement.) Living in Paris in the late 1940s, Gear was part of the post-war surge towards abstraction, but returned to live in the UK in 1950. He shot to fame with his controversial Autumn Landscape, painted for the Festival of Britain in 1951, and became one of the leading innovators of the 1950s' art world.
