Book excerpt: The analysis of the information in contingency tables is an aspect of multivariate (multiple variates) analysis with particular application to qualitative or categorical as well as quantitative variables. The analysis is concerned with counts in multiway cross-classifications or multiway contingency tables. Multiway contingency tables, or cross-classifications of vectors of discrete random variables, provide a useful approach to the analysis of multivariate discrete data. The method of analysis presented will bring out the various inter-relationships among the classificatory variables in a multiway cross-classification or contingency table in many dimensions. The procedure is based on the Principle of Minimum Discrimination Information Estimation, associated statistics and Analysis of Information. General computer programs are available to provide the necessary results for inference. An analysis of a four-way contingency table is presented for illustration of these techniques. (Author).

Book excerpt: Data which result from experiments in the physical sciences and engineering are usually outcomes of controlled experiments, and expressible in quantitative terms. In many other fields however, the data are seldom results of controlled experiments. In addition, the observations usually can be expressed only in qualitative or categorical terms. If observations are taken over a sample of many such individuals, the result will be a multidimensional contingency table with as many dimensions as there are classifications. Contingency tables are cross-classifications of vectors of discrete random variables showing the number of subjects belonging to distinct categories of each of several qualitative or categorical classifications.
Book Synopsis Information Theory and Statistics by : Imre Csiszár
Download or read book Information Theory and Statistics written by Imre Csiszár and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Theory and Statistics: A Tutorial is concerned with applications of information theory concepts in statistics, in the finite alphabet setting. The topics covered include large deviations, hypothesis testing, maximum likelihood estimation in exponential families, analysis of contingency tables, and iterative algorithms with an "information geometry" background. Also, an introduction is provided to the theory of universal coding, and to statistical inference via the minimum description length principle motivated by that theory. The tutorial does not assume the reader has an in-depth knowledge of Information Theory or statistics. As such, Information Theory and Statistics: A Tutorial, is an excellent introductory text to this highly-important topic in mathematics, computer science and electrical engineering. It provides both students and researchers with an invaluable resource to quickly get up to speed in the field.

Book Synopsis Contingency Table Analysis by : Maria Kateri
Download or read book Contingency Table Analysis written by Maria Kateri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contingency tables arise in diverse fields, including life sciences, education, social and political sciences, notably market research and opinion surveys. Their analysis plays an essential role in gaining insight into structures of the quantities under consideration and in supporting decision making. Combining both theory and applications, this book presents models and methods for the analysis of two- and multidimensional-contingency tables. An excellent reference for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and practitioners in statistics as well as biosciences, social sciences, education, and economics, the work may also be used as a textbook for a course on categorical data analysis. Prerequisites include basic background on statistical inference and knowledge of statistical software packages.

Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis of Contingency Tables by : Morten Fagerland
Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Contingency Tables written by Morten Fagerland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Analysis of Contingency Tables is an invaluable tool for statistical inference in contingency tables. It covers effect size estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests for the binomial and the multinomial distributions, unpaired and paired 2x2 tables, rxc tables, ordered rx2 and 2xc tables, paired cxc tables, and stratified tables. For each type of table, key concepts are introduced, and a wide range of intervals and tests, including recent and unpublished methods and developments, are presented and evaluated. Topics such as diagnostic accuracy, inter-rater reliability, and missing data are also covered. The presentation is concise and easily accessible for readers with diverse professional backgrounds, with the mathematical details kept to a minimum.
