Book excerpt: The aim of the Handbook is to present readily accessible, but scholarly sources of information about educational research in the Asia-Pacific region. The scale and scope of the Handbook is such that the articles included in it provide substantive contributions to knowledge and understanding of education in the Asia region. In so doing, the articles present the problems and issues facing education in the region and the findings of research conducted within the region that contribute to the resolution of these problems and issues. Moreover, since new problems and issues are constantly arising, the articles in the Handbook also indicate the likely directions of future developments. The different articles within the Handbook seek to conceptualize the problems in each specific content area under review, provide an integration of the research conducted within that area, the theoretical basis of the research the practical implications of the research and the contribution of the research towards the resolution of the problems identified. Thus, the articles do not involve the reporting of newly conducted research, but rather require a synthesis of the research undertaken in a particular area, with reference to the research methods employed and the theoretical frameworks on which the research is based. In general, the articles do not advocate a single point of view, but rather, present alternative points of view and comment on the debate and disagreements associated with the conduct and findings of the research. Furthermore, it should be noted, that the Handbook is not concerned with research methodology, and only considers the methods employed in inquiry in so far as the particular methods of research contribute to the effective investigation of problems and issues that have arisen in the conduct and provision of education at different levels within the region.

Book excerpt: This book unpacks two decades of Nigeria’s National Assembly spanning 4th–8th legislative sessions. It focuses on the core areas of legislative functions – lawmaking, appropriation, oversight and representation – in examining the achievements, challenges and prospects of the legislature. This is particularly important because Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa is a crucial bastion of democratic governance in the region. Therefore, conducting deep diagnostics of the federal legislature as the custodian of popular mandate and the anchor of accountability offered immense opportunity for learning that would catalyze further institutional reforms and democratic consolidation.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 5.0, American International College, language: English, abstract: The objective of this work investigation is to support the theory that by utilizing focused intervention time with a target and control group of students, students in fifth grade can achieve higher scores overall (on vocabulary and comprehension assessments) by targeting specific student needs with regards to fluency and comprehension. Focused Instructional Time is a fifty-minute block that occurs for students at the South Shore Charter Public School Tuesday through Friday each week. To address fluency and reading comprehension deficits, this researcher completed targeted interventions to address individual student needs in the form of a Book Club, throughout a twelve-week period. This topic is important to research because the focused instructional model is a research-based approach to learning. This is an opportunity every day for students to have additional service delivery if their IEP needs require individual and/or small group service delivery, in addition to the push in, co-taught model that SSCPS embodies. This Focused Instructional Time can benefit not only students who have specific plans, but teachers can utilize the time to meet each student’s individual needs, including higher achieving students who wish to be challenged and extend upon topics taught in their regular education classrooms. After meetings with different administrators to understand their perspective on defining "focused instructional time," this researcher also met with teachers to gather their thoughts on the topic, and how they feel it should be utilized day to day. It is imperative that all adults in the school have the same drive and understanding of the expectations for that time with students to be successful. This researcher gathered, at random, ten students in fifth grade to be part of the target group for interventions, thinking that all students can increase their fluency and comprehension, regardless of instructional and independent reading levels.

This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper combines pre-pandemic face-to-face survey data with follow up phone surveys collected in April-May 2020 to quantify the overall and differential impacts of COVID-19 on household food security, labor market participation and local food prices in Nigeria. We exploit spatial variation in exposure to COVID-19 related infections and lockdown measures along with temporal differences in our outcomes of interest using a difference-in-difference approach. We find that those households exposed to higher COVID-19 cases or mobility lockdowns experience a significant increase in measures of food insecurity. Examining possible transmission channels for this effect, we find that COVID-19 significantly reduces labor market participation and increases food prices. We find that impacts differ by economic activities and households. For instance, lockdown measures increased households' experience of food insecurity by 12 percentage points and reduced the probability of participation in non-farm business activities by 13 percentage points. These lockdown measures have smaller impacts on wage-related activities and farming activities. In terms of food security, households relying on non-farm businesses, poorer households, those with school-aged children, and those living in remote and conflicted-affected zones have experienced relatively larger deteriorations in food insecurity. These findings can help inform immediate and medium-term policy responses, including social protection policies aiming at ameliorating the impacts of the pandemic, as well as guide targeting strategies of governments and international donor agencies by identifying the most impacted sub-populations.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Computer Science, grade: B, University of Zambia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Computer Studies Curriculum implementation in rural secondary schools of Zambia’s Mufumbwe district. This study was guided by the following questions: What facilities and equipment are available for the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum in selected secondary schools of Mufumbwe district? Are there enough qualified teachers to enhance the effective implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? How appropriate are the teaching methodologies in the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? What are the head teachers’, teachers’, learners’ and parents’ views on the teaching of Computer Studies? Globalisation and technological development in the world have accelerated and created a new global economy fuelled by information and driven by innovations. One way in which information spreads is by the use of computers. In the 2013 revised curriculum, the Ministry of General Education in Zambia introduced Computer Studies into the education system. The few studies in this area were done in urban areas. The rural setting has been ignored as regards to implementation of Computer Studies Curriculum. Mufumbwe district being a rural setting is a special case especially in a Zambian context considering development trends in Zambia. Specifically, the study sought to establish the availability of facilities and equipment for the implementation of Computer Studies, find out the availability of qualified Computer Studies teachers, examine the appropriateness of teaching methods and establish the views of Head Teachers, teachers, learners and parents on the implementation of Computer Studies in Secondary Schools in Mufumbwe district. Lack of computer skills among learners in Zambia may hinder technological advancement and fail to achieve the national ICT policy goal of 2007 which introduced CS as an enabler in a diversified and export-oriented economy, capable to improve livelihoods and protect the vulnerable through service delivery and provide an efficient and effective public sector. Further, Zambia may fail to achieve the vision 2030 whose vision is to have a prosperous middle-income nation through having a technologically proficient, fully able to adapt, innovate and invest using its human and natural resources. It was therefore important that this study was conducted in order to investigate how CSC was being implemented in rural secondary schools in Mufumbwe district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a well written and handy source for readers. Additionally, it provides an overview of current issues relevant to the development of entrepreneurial policy, which is based on interesting case studies across a number of nations. . . Dessy Irawati, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research What is new in the world is the need to understand business dynamics; the entry, exit and growth of firms in the economy. This dynamic firm structure, as opposed to the static firm structure that dominated past thinking, has spurred an outpouring of research. The heart of the issue is that while many have identified the importance of business dynamics (entry and exit) we have only recently taken a closer look at the ecological system in which some companies must die for others to thrive. Entrepreneurs are the predators of this system. Public policy in an entrepreneurial economy (dynamic) must limit the forces that prevent firm exit and foster the forces that promote firm entry. This book makes an important contribution to the debate. Zoltan J. Acs, George Mason University, US and Max Planck Institute of Economics, Germany This unique Handbook provides a solid foundation for essential study in the nascent field of entrepreneurship policy research. This foundation is initially developed via the exploration of two significant propositions underpinning the nature of entrepreneurship policy research. The first is that entrepreneurship has emerged as a bona fide focus of public policy, particularly with respect to economic growth and employment creation. The second is that neither scholars nor policy makers are presently equipped to understand the public policy role for entrepreneurship. The contributors experienced scholars, specialist researchers and dynamic policy makers thus grapple with novel questions of considerable policy relevance that few have previously posed. The Handbook therefore provides some of the first crucial, systematic analyses of important issues, and key questions to be raised in order to move entrepreneurship policy forward are also presented. Written by academics and practitioners drawing examples from both North America and Europe, this stimulating new Handbook is a prerequisite for students, scholars and practitioners in the incipient world of entrepreneurship policy.
