Implications of this research suggest that the visual and physical presence of African American counselors within mental health and counseling agencies could make professional counseling more attractive, accessible, and credible for African American women. In addition, counselor-client racial matching may also reverse the underutilization of mental health services among people of color seeking professional counseling.

Book excerpt: "Thousands of Black women in America are experiencing upward mobility, defined for the purpose of this study as moving into a higher socioeconomic status than one's parents, guardians, or whoever raised them. As research indicates, these women may experience the strain of upward mobility more acutely than men or those of other races, given their identities as both women and racial minorities. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore Black women's journeys of upward mobility, and to contribute to what we know about their experiences, specifically, any shifts in their perceptions of self, resulting from upward mobility. I explored the ways that Black women conceptualize changes in their socioeconomic status alongside potential changes in their identity following a change in socioeconomic status. The sample included ten self-identified African American women who self-identify as upwardly-mobile. The primary methods of data collection were in-depth interviews, focus groups, limited email exchanges during member-checks, and field notes. Evidence from this study suggests that a part of upwardly-mobile Black women's socialization in Black families and communities was recognizing that their identities had been overdetermined, or determined for them, by others in those communities. The women were expected to be hyper performers, meeting and exceeding high expectations. Being a hyper-performer would position them for success in new spaces where a different value system prevailed. A critical part of maintaining their sense of self as they pivoted between these differing value systems was, in fact, recognizing that their identity had been overdetermined again, this time by people who did not share the communal, Black values under which they had been socialized. Redetermining their identity for themselves would mean reframing their expectations of themselves and others, and finding ways to attend to their mental, spiritual, and emotional needs in lieu of having ample culturally-sensitive models from which to draw inspiration."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: For African-American women, female gender and African-American (AA) ethnicity combine to create experiences of discrimination, discrimination related stress, and mental health issues that are not encountered by individuals who occupy only one of these status variables. Gender and ethnicity also influence socioeconomic status, an additional variable affecting the experiences and issues that AA women uniquely encounter. The first goal of this study was to examine the ways in which the combined social statuses of gender and ethnicity influence the discriminatory experiences and mental health of AA women. The second goal was to determine the ways in which AA women's self-reported personal experiences with discrimination affect their mental health. The third goal was to examine how these relationships vary between AA women and individuals who share only one of their social status variables: European American (EA) women and AA men. The final goal was to determine the contribution of socioeconomic status to these relationships. A community sample of 358 participants was recruited, consisting of 104 AA women, 82 AA men, 97 EA women, and 75 EA men. Participants completed a composite socioeconomic status measure, The Combined Schedule of Sexist and Racist Events, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and a Symptom Checklist. Results indicated that AAs report more racism and interactive racism and sexism than EAs; and women reported more sexism than men. AA women did not differ significantly from other groups in reported discrimination or mental health. As a group, women reported more psychological distress symptoms than men and AAs reported poorer life satisfaction than EAs. Sexism predicted greater psychological distress symptoms in the total sample, but when AAs and AA women were examined separately, only racism predicted symptoms. SES contributed to life satisfaction but not symptoms, and did not attenuate the roles of sexism and racism in mental health. Preliminary analyses also suggested SES did not contribute to racial and gender group differences in reported discrimination or mental health.

Book excerpt: Race-related stress has been found to impact the mental health of African Americans in literature. Three manuscripts were developed for this dissertation. The first is a critical literature review identifying the multiple pathways by which racism can affect mental health, and the current research addressing this problem is presented. Second, a quantitative study looking at what type of coping mechanisms African Americans use when dealing with race-related stress and how racial identity statuses impact these coping mechanisms?; The third manuscript addresses the research question, among the identified coping mechanisms, is there a relationship with psychological distress? The first manuscript is a critical literature review which discusses racism, race-related stress, and coping resources. The aim of the paper is to identify the multiple pathways by which racism can affect mental health and the current research addressing this problem. Initially, views of racism and race-related stress will be identified; theories for use of stress will be examined, and how racial identity status influences the perception of racism. In addition, individual strategies for coping with racism will be discussed, as well as major approaches to coping that have received sufficient research with regard to their effectiveness for mental and physical outcomes. The purpose of the first quantitative study was to examine the relationships among race-related stress, racial identity status, and coping resources in African Americans in a sample of 294 African American adults. Results indicated that avoidance coping and seeking social support predicted higher levels of race-related stress. Problem solving coping did not predict race-related stress. In addition, racial identity status (pre-encounter and immersion-emersion) predicted avoidance coping where racial identity status (internalization) predicted more problem solving coping behavior. The findings emphasize the need to recognize how racial identity status influence styles of coping in African Americans. Implications for mental health providers are discussed. The purpose of the second study was to examine the relationships between race-related stress, coping resources, and mental health in African Americans in a sample of 294 African American adults. Results indicated they were a predictor of psychological distress and well-being in African Americans. Specifically, the avoidance coping mechanism led to participants in the study experiencing more psychological distress when using this coping resource. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the results, which confirmed our hypothesis that mal-adaptive coping strategies predicted psychological distress. The findings emphasize the need to recognize how coping styles influence mental health in African Americans. Implications for mental health providers are discussed.

Book excerpt: Through the use of an analog methodology and a factorial experimental design, the current study investigated the effects of counselors' race and multicultural competency on counselor preference for Black participants. Eighty-seven African American college students participated in an online or computer-administered study. The African American multiculturally competent counselor received significantly higher counselor effectiveness ratings than did the White multiculturally competent counselor. Also, the correlations between racial identity ideologies and counselor effectiveness were examined within each condition of race and multicultural competency. Racial Identity was measured with the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (Sellers, Rowley, Chavous, Shelton, & Smith, 1997). The findings from this study may assist counselors and researchers in understanding how potential African American clients perceive counselors based on their race and multicultural competency and how client's racial identity may affect African American clients' perceptions of counselors' effectiveness.

Book excerpt: Racial identity is a complex construct that generally refers to how one defines his or her race, and how strongly one feels he or she belongs to it. Having an identity that is stigmatized yet highly salient to a person can be problematic in that people of color may be at risk of psychological distress due to experiences of racism, unequal treatment, and anxiety about future experiences of discrimination. Nonetheless, positive feelings of ethnic affirmation and belonging, appreciation for one’s ethnic identity, and increased ethnic behaviors have been identified as factors contributing to resilience and coping in African Americans. Research alludes to a strong, positive racial identity having a protective effect on the risk for developing depression; however, the nature and prevalence of depression in Black college-educated women has largely been understudied in the U.S., particularly in regard to women who have completed college or are of middle and high SES. The present study sought to explore the nature of depression and prevalence of depressive symptoms as it relates to Black women in conjunction with racial identity and education level using a sample of 167 African American women. Specifically, it was hypothesized that 1) education would negatively correlate with depression, 2) positive racial identity would negatively correlate with depression, and 3) the combination of a strong, positive racial identity and African American social network would more accurately predict lower depression better than positive racial identity alone. While Hypotheses 1 and 3 were not supported, Hypothesis 2 found support in a strong negative correlation between depression and racial regard, one of the three dimensions of the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity. Results indicate that women who hold positive views toward themselves as Black people and perceive others as doing the same are at lower risk for developing depression. This connection indicates the importance of racial socialization and how fostering cultural pride can influence positive mental health outcomes in people of color.

Book excerpt: Black women experience several unique influences on their wellness and mental health symptoms, including gendered-racism, religion/spirituality, cultural beliefs, controlling images/stereotypes, and gendered-racial identity. Counseling psychologists are called to recognize these individual and sociocultural influences on clients, viewing clients holistically and within their cultural context. This study explored how psychological well-being and optimal beliefs related to Black women's gendered-racial identity and mental health symptoms. This study also assessed the factor structure of Ryff's Scales of Psychological Well-being measure for Black women and identified a suitable two-factor structure for this sample. Across qualitative and quantitative results, optimal beliefs contributed uniquely to Black women's definition of wellness. Liberation/empowerment, an optimal worldview, trusting relationships, and confidence to manage future challenges were related to fewer mental health symptoms in this sample. Study results also clarified that Black women who have high private regard and whose gendered-racial identity is central to their self-concept endorse trusting relationships and optimal beliefs as central components of their wellness. These results suggest counseling psychologists must move beyond multicultural knowledge to engage in social justice action that creates liberation for Black women and challenges the suboptimal system currently in place in dominant society. Taking such action and enacting social justice is necessary to decrease the mental health disparities experienced by Black women and to be an ally in their empowerment.
