Book excerpt: The United States is becoming more racially diverse, and it is imperative that PK-12 teachers receive high-quality professional development in diversity and inclusion issues to better understand the students whom they teach. The National Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) Project has been a prominent diversity training opportunity for PK-12 educators since 1987 and has been in operation in Black River Falls (BRF) since 2012. BRF is a small town in West-Central Wisconsin and is the context for this hermeneutic phenomenological study. There are three sub-communities discussed in this dissertation: The city of BRF, the BRF School District (BRFSD), and the Ho-Chunk Nation. Approximately 23% of the students in the BRFSD are Native American (mostly enrolled members of the Ho-Chunk Nation) and nearly 100% of the faculty are White, which means that the faculty is not necessarily representative of the students whom they teach. This study discovered that voluntary participation in BRF SEED produced transformative results in teacher participants and deepened their awareness of diversity issues. Teachers interviewed for this study described a greater willingness to infuse their curriculum with diversity-related content and reported having a better understanding of their Ho-Chunk neighbors as a result of participating in BRF SEED.

A foundational belief that underpins the contributions to this volume is that rural communities contain within themselves the resources to promote and sustain vibrant educational endeavors. This belief has inspired a wealth of innovations that collectively offer a countervailing perspective to the view that global competitiveness is the preeminent goal of education, and that this goal is best served by “big education.” Since early last century, there has been a pervasive implicit, and sometimes explicit, assumption that rural places are bereft of the ability to educate children effectively. As repeatedly witnessed in this volume, in collaboration with universities, schools in rural places and the communities that both sustain and rely on them can appropriately configure the educational environment to optimally nurture the intellectual growth of children. The chapters in this volume are grouped into three parts that explore, in turn, the design features of innovative school-universitycommunity collaborations, some novel approaches to such collaborations, and the contours of parental and community involvement in such collaborations. Chapters discuss both larger scale collaborations that involve many school districts across wide -spread regions, and smaller scale collaborations that involve intensive engagements among the educators and members of smaller communities, and offer theoretical insights into the collaborative process itself. As mentioned above, two narrative threads run through the chapters: that effective collaborations address goals and aspirations expressed by those who are privileged to live in rural America, and that effective collaborations are oriented to building on the strengths inherent in the social fabric of those rural communities.

Book excerpt: Superintendents and school boards must balance state and federal mandates, requirements of new legislation, and policy changes as they search for best practices in education that will result in increased student achievement. Pressure has increased, with an emphasis on high stakes testing and accountability since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind legislation in 2001. Federal dollars, in the form of demonstration grants, have been used by some districts to try innovative instructional practices. The challenge for school districts is sustaining effective change practices after the grant money is gone. The purpose of this study is to examine a federal arts demonstration grant, the Art in Action grant, implemented for three years in three rural elementary schools in northwest Pennsylvania. Feedback from participants in the grant is used to identify important characteristics of successful implementation and sustainability. One of the schools in the study implemented Professional Learning Community (PLC) practices. Participants were surveyed about their experience with the Art in Action grant. The survey generated a concourse of statements that formed a Q Set. Twelve participants performed a Q Sort using the statements from the concourse. PQ Method was used to analyze the responses. Trained facilitators conducted interviews with participants. Results indicated participants found the Art in Action experience beneficial for students, especially those with special needs. Sustainability of the program appeared dependent upon principal support and a philosophical or emotional connection made by the teacher to the art inclusion instructional practices. Teachers valued the collaboration time provided by the grant.
