The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Regular engagement in physical activity is proven to decrease the risk of numerous chronic diseases and to improve mental well-being. However, many children and adults around the world fail to engage in sufficient levels of activity required to produce health benefits, with reports showing physical activity levels still on the decline. Perhaps because of this increase in sedentary lifestyles, obesity has become one of the biggest public health threats in the 21st century. Furthermore, both obesity and physical inactivity are closely related to psychological health, and may play an important role in shaping self-perceptions and feeling of general well-being. '...' In the first study, physical status, physical activity levels, and social physique anxiety measures were obtained from an adolescent sample of 259 participants. Partial correlation analyses revealed that physical activity involvement was not directly linked with physical status; however, both factors were significantly associated with social physique anxiety, which suggested evidence of an indirect link between the two constructs. That is, analyses showed that poor physical status was associated with higher levels of physique anxiety, which in turn linked to low engagement in physical activity. In addition, age and gender effects emerged, revealing unique differences in the ways in which these three variables may be related. To cross-validate and further examine these relationships STUDY 2 extended the range of self-perception measures to include a multidimensional assessment of physical self-concept and a global self-esteem measure along with physique anxiety. These variables were assessed in a German adult sample (N = 229), again alongside measures of physical status and physical activity involvement. Consistent with STUDY 1, no direct link was found between physical status and levels of physical activity involvement. However, evidence of an indirect link did emerge as both variables were related to multiple dimensions of physical self-concept, thereby reinforcing and extending the findings from STUDY 1. Furthermore, age effects emerged for physical self-concept, which had not been confirmed in previous research on physical self-concept. STUDY 3 employed a longitudinal design and investigated changes in physical self-concept, global self-esteem and social physique anxiety before, during, and after participation in a 12-week weight management programme. Participants (N = 63) were assigned to one of three conditions: (1) cognitive-behavioural treatment only, (2) cognitive-behavioural treatment and exercise, and (3) non-treatment control. Statistical analyses revealed a small, but significant reduction in weight for members of both treatment groups. Relative to controls, both treatment groups also improved on a variety of physical self-concept dimensions. At the same time, however, significant group main effects suggested that a weight-loss program incorporating exercise involvement may provide physical self-concept benefits that go beyond those obtained with standard CBT regimes. Collectively, these studies add to the growing body of literature on the connections between physical activity, self-perceptions and physical status. They also highlight the importance of involvement in habitual physical activity throughout the lifespan. Findings are discussed with regards to their contribution to the extant literature, and applied implications, limitations, and future directions are considered.

The study analyzed the differences in participants' self-esteem on days they had PE versus days they had Encore class (i.e. journalism, drama, art, global awareness, stem, and music). Participants were 25 students in an intact sixth-grade PE class (10 girls, 15 boys) at a middle school in a suburb of Chicago. Data were collected from two sources, pedometers recording number of steps taken daily and scores on Harter's Global Self-Worth Scale, a measure of self-esteem. Data were analyzed using SPSS to determine a) average number of steps taken for each participant on PE days, b) number of steps taken by each participant on non-PE days, c) average global self-worth on PE days, d) average global self-worth scores on non-PE days, e) the degree of relationship between the number of steps taken and global self-worth on PE and Encore days, and f) the degree of difference between average steps taken on PE versus non-PE days. Findings indicate that students tend to take more steps on PE days than on Encore days. While students participating in PE do tend to rate their global self-worth slightly higher than when they participate in Encore days, there is no statistically significant relationship between steps taken and global self-worth.

It is recommended that children and adolescents participate in physical activity for at least 60 minutes daily at moderate or vigorous intensity. In addition to potentially enhancing academic performance, participation in physical activity may also influence perceptions of physical appearance and global self-esteem, which tend to decrease with age in adolescent females. The purposes of this study were to: (a) examine the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the percentage of adolescent females from a rural community that meets physical activity recommendations; (b) examine the relationship of body composition, physical activity, and sedentary behavior on academic performance; and (c) examine the relationship between physical activity and physical self-concept among adolescent females. Thirty adolescent females (mean age = 15.6 " 1.3 years) wore an Actigraph GT1M accelerometer for seven consecutive days, set to measure in 15-second epochs. Age specific cutpoints were used to determine minutes of sedentary behavior and light, moderate, vigorous, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Participants completed the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) to assess how they perceive themselves physically. Height, weight, and percent body fat were measured. Grade point averages (GPA) were obtained from school records. Regression analysis was performed to predict GPA from measures of body composition, sedentary behavior, and MVPA. Measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior were correlated with PSDQ subscale scores with Pearson correlations. Thirty percent of participants (n = 9) were obese (BMI [greater than or equal to] 95th percentile) and another 36% (n = 11) were overweight (BMI between the 85th and 94th percentiles). None of the participants accumulated [greater than or equal to] 60 minutes of MVPA per day. Daily MVPA averaged 9.7 (" 7.1) minutes. Design: Survey/Questionnaire and Observation Experimental Methods: Participants included a total of 53 students, currently enrolled in one of two PA elective courses, physical education or Zumba dance class. Participants included students in both the 7th and 8th grades, ages ranging from 11 to 14 years, at a rural middle school located in northern California. Methods included measurements of body composition, PA levels, as well as psychological well-being. Body composition was determined by pre-and post-body mass index measurement. Physical activity levels were measured with ActiGraph accelerometers, worn on four separate occasions, by all participants. Psychological well-being was measured pre-and post-using the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire - short form (PSDQ-S). Seventh and eighth grades students, ages 11-14 years, were recruited from a rural middle school located in Northern California. The 55 students were enrolled in either an elective traditional physical education course or an elective Zumba physical education course. Results: An independent t-test was conducted using the IBM SPSS program and showed no significance difference between the traditional physical education group and the Zumba group, on all variables measured, except in steps per minute and kcals expended. A significant difference was found in steps per minute and kcals, favoring the physical education group. A dependent t-test was also conducted, finding no significant difference of pre- to post-measurements of BMI and PSDQ-S questionnaire, within both sample groups. Conclusion: Study findings support an equality among sample groups on measured variables with the exceptions of steps per minute and kcal expenditure, suggesting that alternative physical activity courses, such as Zumba, can be as beneficial as a traditional physical education course in levels of BMI, PA levels of MVPA and time spend in sedentary movement, and physical self-description scales of physical self-concept, esteem, and global esteem.

King, PhD Major Department: Pediatric School Psychology Children and adults spend the majority of their waking time engaged in sedentary activities. These activities may be affecting the child's physical and mental health. Little research exists on the relationship between the amount of physical activity, screen time, and academic achievement as a predictor for later physical activity and academic achievement. This study examined physical activity, screen time, and academic achievement predictors and the relationship on adolescent physical activity and academic achievement. Data for this investigation were drawn from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K) and focused on 9,096 children who completed physical activity questions in eighth grade. The findings indicate that there were significant, positive relationships between reading and math skills. Additionally, there were significant relationships between kindergarten predictor variables. These predictor variables also all significantly contributed to physical activity participation in eighth grade. Similar to previous research, the current study found that children who scored high on reading and math assessment in kindergarten were more likely to continue to score high on reading and math in eighth grade. Policy recommendations for education and future research implications are discussed.

The overarching purpose of this thesis was to generate findings that could be used to inform public health recommendations for physical activity and screen time. A series of six manuscripts were completed to explore the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and health in youth. The first manuscript examined the dose-response relation between objectively measured total and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity with blood pressure and hypertension. Participating in 30 and 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day decreased the odds of hypertension in youth by 50% and 63%, respectively. The second manuscript explored the influence of intensity of physical activity and incidental movement on total and trunk adiposity. Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity was found to predict total and trunk adiposity beyond other intensities and incidental movement. The third manuscript sought to determine whether or not physical activity accrued in bouts was more beneficial than total physical activity with relation to being overweight. The inclusion of short and medium-to-long bouts of physical activity decreased the odds of overweight above and beyond total physical activity level. The fourth manuscript included a detailed examination of the relation between physical activity and screen time by considering different forms of physical activity, different physical activity environments, and various screen time behaviours. By and large, physical activity and screen time were not related. The fifth manuscript determined the proportion of Canadian youth meeting screen time guidelines. Only 18% of girls and 14% of boys in grades 6 to 10 met screen time guidelines of no more than 2 hours per day. The final manuscript examined the relationship between screen time and metabolic syndrome. A dose-response relation was observed between screen time and metabolic syndrome independent of physical activity level. It is hoped that the findings from this thesis will provide useful information that will be considered in developing and modifying physical activity and screen time recommendations for the paediatric population.

Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. Book excerpt: Well-being incorporates psychological, social and moral development, the capacity to enter into and sustain satisfying relationships and limit distress and maladaptive behaviour. The benefits of physical activity and dangers of a sedentary lifestyle to health outcomes, e.g. cardio-vascular disease, obesity, diabetes and psychological well-being are well documented children. Due to methodological and measurement problems, research addressing the relationship between psychological well-being and physical activity are inconsistent and weak. This series of studies aimed to overcome the problems of previous research and investigated the relationship between children's psychological well-being and habitual physical activity. Previous research has highlighted an association between children's physical activity and individual psychological well-being constructs. However, Masse et al. (1998) argued that psychological well-being should contain the measurement of both positive (e.g. self-esteem) and negative (e.g. depression) psychological states. Subsequently, Parfitt and Eston (2005) identified an association between children's total physical activity and psychological well-being (anxiety, depression, self-esteem). Limitations of previous studies include the type of physical activity measures used and the measurement of only global self-esteem, which itself is multidimensional. The purpose of this research was to extend and expand on the limitations of the Parfitt and Eston's (2005) study. Psychological measures included both global, domain and sub-domain measurements of self-esteem, with accelerometry providing estimates of total daily physical activity and time spent in sedentary through to vigorous intensity activity. Study One assessed relationships between psychological well-being and physical activity using the same psychological constructs as Parfitt and Eston (2005), but with physical activity intensity included. Results highlighted an association between self-esteem and time spent in very light activity. Study Two assessed the current data's applicability with the proposed models and theories related to self-esteem. It was concluded that the current data provided an adequate fit with the proposed models and theories of self-esteem. Study Three introduced the domain and sub-domain constructs of self-esteem and a more valid measure of physical activity. Results highlighted associations at the global, domain and sub-domain levels with predominately time spent in very light and vigorous intensity activity. Very light intensity activity was associated with negative effects while vigorous intensity activity was associated with positive effects. It was hypothesised that if these cross-sectional relationships also existed longitudinally, then an intervention study changing the time children spend in very light and vigorous intensity activity may be beneficial to children's psychological health. With the relationship between children's psychological well-being and physical activity clearly highlighted, Study Four assessed the direction of this relationship and aimed to inform a potential intervention study. Longitudinal data were collected over a 12-month period and multi-level modelling was used to analyse the direction of the relationship. Results highlighted a potential indirect effect of time accumulated in very light and vigorous intensity activity on psychological well-being, which reinforced the previous cross-sectional studies. Furthermore, a reciprocal effect was identified between physical activity and the physical self-worth domain. It was concluded that interventions decreasing time spent in very light and increasing vigorous intensity activity may be beneficial to children's psychological well-being. Study Five aimed to have an impact on children's psychological well-being, by reducing the time children spent in very light intensity activity, through an increase in daily step counts. Although the intervention decreased the time children spent in sedentary behaviour, there was no influence on psychological well-being. However, there were several methodological limitations that affected the intervention, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn from this study, including a small sample size providing available data for analysis. The results of this thesis show a relationship between children's psychological well-being and habitual physical activity intensity exists. Further research manipulating the time children accumulate in very light (reduction) and vigorous (increase) intensity activity, can potentially impact positively on the psychological well-being of a normal population of children.

With obesity as a growing issue, it is important to address the underlying behaviors that lead to weight gain and sedentary behaviors among children. The risk for obesity can be addressed through behavioral changes related to a healthy diet, physical activity, and decreasing sedentary activities, as well as adapting the physical environment. The purpose of this research was to assess knowledge, self-efficacy, and behavior related to fruit and vegetable consumption, screen time, physical activity, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, and sleep of fourth and fifth grade students at one elementary school. A six-week program and point-of-decision prompts were developed and implemented. The researcher studied the initial impact and effectiveness of the intervention through a pre- and post-survey. The results from 39 participants were analyzed. Major findings suggest that multicomponent programs and point-of-decision prompts can be effective methods when used among elementary-aged students. Statistical significance was found for a change in knowledge over the course of the program. Future childhood obesity prevention efforts should focus on a collaborative approach between health care systems, schools, and public health entities to create a long-lasting impact on obesity.
