Book excerpt: This book offers "a new take on the history of American diplomacy. Rather than retracing a familiar story of realism versus idealism, David Milne suggests that U.S. foreign policy has also been crucially divided between those who view statecraft as an art and those who believe it can aspire toward the certainties of science. [The book] follows a colorful cast of characters who built on each other's ideas to create the policies we have today ... From the age of steam engines to the age of drones, Milne reveals patterns of aspirant worldmaking that have remained impervious to the passage of time. The result is a panoramic history of U.S. foreign policy driven by ideas and the lives and times of their creators"--

What it should do, what doctrine it holds, what ships it deploys, and how it fights are determined by practical political and military choices in relation to national needs. Choices are made according to the state's goals, perceived threat, maritime opportunity, technological capabilities, practical experience, and, not the least, the way the sea service defines itself and its way of war. This book is a history of the modern U.S. Navy. It explains how the Navy, in the century after 1890, was formed and reformed in the interaction of purpose, experience, and doctrine.

New book. Considered by scholars to be the most influential book on naval strategy, "The Influence of Sea Power on History: 1660-1783" by Alfred Thayer Mahan, it is a story of naval warfare and sea power during the 17th and 18th centuries that would have a profound influence on the world in the first part of the 20th century. After the publication of this work, the policies described in it would soon be adopted by the main military powers of the time that would eventually cause the naval arms race of the First World War. Mahan published "The Influence of Maritime Power on History: 1660-1783" while he was president of the United States Naval War College. In it he examines what factors lead to the supremacy of the seas, focusing largely on how Britain rose to imperial dominance through the development of its navy. The book contains numerous descriptions of a series of European and American wars and how naval power was used in each. After the publication of this work, the policies described in it would soon be adopted by the main military powers of the time, which would finally provoke the naval arms race of the First World War.

(Alfred Thayer) Mahan The history of Sea Power is largely, though by no means solely, a narrative of contests between nations, of mutual rivalries, of violence frequently culminating in war. The profound influence of sea commerce upon the wealth and strength of countries was clearly seen long before the true principles which governed its growth and prosperity were detected. To secure to one's own people a disproportionate share of such benefits, every effort was made to exclude others, either by the peaceful legislative methods of monopoly or prohibitory regulations, or, when these failed, by direct violence. The clash of interests, the angry feelings roused by conflicting attempts thus to appropriate the larger share, if not the whole, of the advantages of commerce, and of distant unsettled commercial regions, led to wars. On the other hand, wars arising from other causes have been greatly modified in their conduct and issue by the control of the sea. Therefore the history of sea power, while embracing in its broad sweep all that tends to make a people great upon the sea or by the sea, is largely a military history; and it is in this aspect that it will be mainly, though not exclusively, regarded in the following pages. A study of the military history of the past, such as this, is enjoined by great military leaders as essential to correct ideas and to the skilful conduct of war in the future. Napoleon names among the campaigns to be studied by the aspiring soldier, those of Alexander, Hannibal, and Cæsar, to whom gunpowder was unknown; and there is a substantial agreement among professional writers that, while many of the conditions of war vary from age to age with the progress of weapons, there are certain teachings in the school of history which remain constant, and being, therefore, of universal application, can be elevated to the rank of general principles. For the same reason the study of the sea history of the past will be found instructive, by its illustration of the general principles of maritime war, notwithstanding the great changes that have been brought about in naval weapons by the scientific advances of the past half century, and by the introduction of steam as the motive power. Book excerpt: Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914) was a United States Navy officer, geostrategist, and educator. His ideas on the importance of sea power influenced navies around the world, and helped prompt naval buildups before World War I. Despite his success in the Navy, his skills in actual command of a ship were not exemplary, and a number of vessels under his command were involved in collisions. On the other hand, the books he wrote ashore made him arguably the most influential naval historian. In 1885, he was appointed lecturer in naval history and tactics and the Naval War College. Before entering on his duties, Mahan was pointed to write his future studies and lectures on the influence of sea power. He organized his lectures into his most influential books, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783 (1890).

One vital aspect of his life, however, has been ignored or misunderstood by many scholars: his religious faith. Mahan was a professing Christian who took his faith with the utmost seriousness, and as a result, his worldview was inherently Christian. He wrote and spoke extensively on religious issues, a point frequently ignored by many historians. This is a fundamental mistake, for a deeper and more accurate understanding of Mahan as a person and as a naval theorist can be gained by a meaningful examination of his religious beliefs. God and Sea Power is the first work to examine in a detailed and contextual way how Mahan’s faith influenced his views on war, politics, and foreign relations.

Mahan Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914) was an American naval officer, considered one of the most important naval strategists of the 19th century. In 1885 he was appointed Professor of Naval History and Tactics at the United States Naval War College and became president of the institution between 1886 and 1889. This highly influential volume, first published in 1890, contains the analysis of Mahan on the war and naval tactics between 1660-1783. Mahan discusses and analyzes the factors that led to Britain's naval domination during the 18th century, and recommends various naval strategies based on these factors. His work was closely studied by contemporary military powers, with his tactics adopted by many of the major navies in the years before World War I. This volume is considered one of the most influential published works on naval strategy and is invaluable for the study of naval warfare both before and during World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Mahan's 1889 Preface - THE definite object proposed in this work is an examination of the general history of Europe and America with particular reference to the effect of sea power upon the course of that history. Historians generally have been unfamiliar with the conditions of the sea, having as to it neither special interest nor special knowledge; and the profound determining in-fluence of maritime strength -upon great issues has con-sequently been overlooked. This is even more true of particular occasions than of the general tendency of sea power. It is easy to say in a general way, that the use and control of the sea is and has been a great factor in the history of the world; it is more troublesome to seek out and show- its exact bearing at a particular juncture. Yet, unless this be done, the acknowledgment of general importance remains vague and unsubstantial; not resting, as it should, upon o. collection of special instances in which the precise effect has been made clear, by an analysis of the conditions at the given moments. . . . The period embraced is from 1660, when. the sailing- ship era, with its distinctive features, had fairly begun, to 1783, the end of the American Revolution. While the thread of general history upon which the successive maritime events is strung is intentionally slight, the effort has been to present a clear as well as accurate outline. Writing as a naval officer in full sympathy with his profession, the author has not hesitated to di-gress freely on questions of naval policy, strategy, and tactics; but as technical language has been avoided, it is hoped that these matters, simply presented, will be found. of interest to the unprofessional reader.
