This study sought to better understand the impact of specific factors--social support, racial identity, perceived racial discrimination, coping, and religious coping--on the academic achievement of African American male college student achievement. Using secondary data and a Multiple Linear Regression analyses, the project investigated relationships among these influences as a way of uncovering strategies used to mitigate obstacles faced by African American males attending Predominantly White Institutions. The study used an anti-deficit achievement approach to examine how African American male college students at two PWIs negotiate experiences and the use of coping mechanisms that may positively affect academic achievement for this subgroup of students. Results of the study indicate that the college experiences and coping mechanisms examined have a limited impact on GPA for African American male students. The results indicate that higher education professionals should focus attention on providing avenues for African American male students to express religious and other coping techniques to assist in achievement and to better manage the effects of discrimination and isolation that are part of their transition to PWIs. Future research on African American male college student achievement should include a broader sample group from various campus types to increase the generalizability of the findings.

Book excerpt: Why are so many Black students prematurely leaving school? What factors can be attributed toward academic achievement of Black students? Should teachers be less concerned with curriculum content and more sensitive to the social and psychological needs during child development? The authors argue that academic achievement for Black students is influenced not only by circumstances found in the individual or family and school settings, but by a whole host of factors. Social and economic environments, the development of the self-concept, peer pressure, personal attributes such as resources, skills and motivation--these are a few of the many factors contributing towards a person's ability to achieve academically. Black Students brings together current research to address these factors from a variety of perspectives and covers the full educational cycle from kindergarten through the college years. The majority of past research on academic achievement of Black students has placed blame on the individual or credited failure toward an incapability to succeed. The Unchosen Me examines the experiences of African American collegiate women and the identity-related pressures they encounter both on and off campus. Rachelle Winkle-Wagner finds that the predominantly white college environment often denies African American students the chance to determine their own sense of self. Even the very programs and policies developed to promote racial equality may effectively impose “unchosen” identities on underrepresented students. She offers clear evidence of this interactive process, showing how race, gender, and identity are created through interactions among one’s self, others, and society. At the heart of this book are the voices of women who struggle to define and maintain their identities during college.
