Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The present study examines use of pre-performance routines on anxiety and performance. Twenty-four NCAA Division III wrestlers were recruited to complete three separate trials with three separate and randomized pre-performance routines (control, an arbitrary activity, and Deep Breathing), followed by a 300m sprint. Self-reported anxiety levels were recorded before and after the pre-performance routine using the Revised Anxiety Rating Scale (ARS-2) (Cox, Martens, & Russel, (2003)). The ARS-2 uses three items to evaluate categories of state anxiety Cognitive Anxiety, State Anxiety, and Self-Confidence. The three subscales of the ARS-2 did not significantly influence time on the 300-meter (300m) sprint. No main effect was found in the trial conditions and subscales of the ARS-2. The ARS-2 subscales were found to be correlated with each other in each trial condition.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether moderate exercise-induced dehydration (DEH) has an effect on cognitive performance on the ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) in Division III collegiate wrestlers. 21 NCAA Division III wrestlers representative of 10 collegiate weight classes participated in the study. Subjects completed the computer-based ImPACT test under euhydrated (EUH) conditions, and immediately following, a standard wrestling practice to induce moderate DEH (2.5-4% body weight loss). EUH status was confirmed using urine specific gravity and body weight (BW) measurements of subjects. Percent BW loss (% BW) was determined as the difference between pre and post-practice BW. ImPACT test scores were compared between EUH and DEH conditions to determine if a significant change in specific cognitive performance variables had occurred. Paired t-tests were used to determine significance (p

Book excerpt: "Pre-performance routines have been found to enhance performance in many sports. These routines may have effects both cognitively and physiologically on those who perform them. Difference in physiological arousal, as measured by heart rate, was measured on participants during a basketball free throw under varying pressure situations. One treatment condition was given a pre-performance routine as means of controlling arousal. Those who received a pre-performance routine experienced less physiological arousal on Day 1 and Day 3 when compared to the no-routine control condition. Findings suggest that the implementation of a pre-performance routine prior to basketball free throws may help decrease physiological arousal."--Abstract of thesis.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The study was designed to examine the relationships among cohesion, performance, and goal orientation in intercollegiate wrestlers. The Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ; Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1985) and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda, 1989; Duda & Nicholls, 1992) were administered to 143 NCAA Division III Wrestlers. Reliability and validity were reported for the GEQ by Carron et al. (1985), and for the TEOSQ by Duda and Nicholls (1989). For individuals, winning percentage from the 07-08 season was positively related to all four subscales of the GEQ. The GEQ subscale Attraction to Group-social (ATG-S) was positively related to both subscales of the TEOSQ. The GEQ subscale Group Integration-Task (GI-T) was positively related to the TEOSQ subscale Task Orientation. For Teams, mean GEQ subscale Attraction to Group-Task was positively related to team winning percentage. A larger team sample size and a better measure of winning percentage is recommended for future replication of this study.

Associations between negative performance outcomes and high levels of anxiety and perfectionism have been reported across the vast majority of sports, with measurable influences observed on individuals during performance. The present study was designed to explore the relationship between perfectionism, anxiety, and competition level amongst high school wrestlers. Our analyses revealed statistically-significant positive relationships between a wide variety of factors, including state somatic anxiety and concern over mistakes; parental criticism and doubts about actions; and state cognitive anxiety and concern over mistakes. The results of the present study contain practical information for sport psychology consultants, coaches, and athletes.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of short term process goals on precompetitive state anxiety in sprint adolescent swimmers. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants belonging to a USA or YMCA competitive swim team in the New England region. Adolescent swimmers (N = 26; age = 14-18 years; male = 11, female = 15) were randomly assigned to one of two groups (intervention or non-intervention). All participants underwent an anxiety induction and were asked to recall a race of substantial importance. Following the anxiety induction, the experimental group set and monitored short term process goals in the week leading up to competition. No significant interaction effect was found for pre and post ARS-2 subscale scores for the experimental group or control group. Overall, higher percent changes in self-confidence ratings and cognitive anxiety levels from pretest to post-test were noted for experimental group participants compared control group participants.

Book excerpt: Cattell (1965) and Spielberger (1966) proposed that there are two types of anxiety: state (fluctuating, temporary anxiety) and trait (stable, personality characteristic). The Yerkes-Dodson Law (1908) states that an individual’s performance can either be enhanced or impaired depending on the individual’s level of anxiety/arousal. Nideffer’s (1989) theory of Attentional and Interpersonal Style offers an explanation for the relationship between anxiety/arousal and performance, stating that the levels of anxiety/arousal effect an athlete’s willingness/ability to concentrate on task-relevant cues that aid performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if trait anxiety affects state anxiety and free throw performance of female collegiate basketball players. The revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) was used to measure the participants’ trait anxiety and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure the participants’ state anxiety in a pre-post design during two conditions (no pressure vs pressure). An ANOVA was used to test each hypothesis at the .05 level. Results demonstrated that trait anxiety had a significant effect on state anxiety with the level of state anxiety increasing as the level of trait anxiety increases. However, trait anxiety did not have a significant effect on performance. State anxiety had a significant effect on performance with performance decreasing as state anxiety increases. Condition also had a significant effect on performance with performance increasing in the second condition (pressure). These results indicate that individuals perform worse when they experience increasing levels of arousal and that pressure causes performance to increase.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify a potentiation effect on 30 meter (m) fly sprint performance in collegiate sprinters and jumpers (M=21, W=5) following an acute bout of whole-body vibration. The WBV protocol consisted of one 30 second bout at 50 Hz, ~3 mm amplitude, and 60 seconds rest before a 30m fly sprint. Sprint times were measured using timing gates, and characteristics of strength and power were measured using a force plate. Analysis included measures of jump height, peak power, peak force, and rate of force development. Each subject participated in 3 separate trials using randomized treatment sessions over 3 months of preparation training. The control condition consisted of no vibration and WBV treatment 1 and 2 incorporated vibration. Statistics comparing the average sprint times showed no treatment effects. The results of this study indicate that WBV at 50 Hz and ~3 mm amplitude has no effect on sprint times.
