Book excerpt: This work is a study of one of the most extraordinary and mysterious of all visual phenomena - that known by the name of its discoverer Celeste McCollough. Many such psychophysical effects may be regarded as little more than laboratory curiosities, not necessarily of great importance in everyday life. The McCollough effect certainly involves 'phantom' colours, i.e. colours generated within the visual system of the brain rather than resulting from the character of the light reaching the eye, but nevertheless has properties that make one unwilling to accord it the status of a mere optical illusion. Of course, even illusions can form valuable objects of study, since the perceptual confusions resulting from particular external influences may reveal unsuspected aspects of the sensory processes themselves.

Book excerpt: This volume was designed to focus on the problems of perception and originally was to have been solely edited by Professor Hans-Lukas Teuber who was a member of the editorial board which initiated production of the Handbook. Accordingly, he issued invitations to a number of researchers III perception asking them to contribute chapters written in a style described III his words: " . . . Ire hope that no author lI'ill feel COl/strained to undertake a major search of the literature: he could In'ite, instead. on an area in which he has been quite actire himse?t~ and II'here most of the issues are immediately obt"ious to him. In this Iray, the IITiting of the chapter should be cnjoyable rather than a chore . . it should result in a personal account of the state of a given area rather than in an encyclopedic treatise . . . the field deserves this sort of summary ret'iell", particularly (f it is pointed toward the future and speeds the convergence of det'elopments in sensory physiology and psychological studies of perception, " With the growing burden of national and international commitments includ ing departmental headship, Professor Teuber felt that it would be wise to share the editorial responsibilities for this volume and accordingly, asked Professors Richard Held and Herschel Leibowitz to co-edit the volume with him in the same spirit as outlined in his invitation to authors. They agreed to help in this task.

Book excerpt: Motion perception lies at the heart of the scientific study of vision. The motion aftereffect (MAE) is the appearance of directional movement in a stationary object or scene after the viewer has been exposed to viusal motion in the opposite direction. For example, after one has looked at a waterfall for a period of time, the scene beside the waterfall may appear to move upward when one's gaze is transfered to it. Although the phenomenon seems simple, research has revealed copmlexities in the underlying mechanisms, and offered general lessons about how the brain processes visual information. In the 1990s alone, more than 200 papers have been published on MAE, largely inspired by improved techniques for examining brain electrophysiology and by emerging new theories of motion perception.

This book brings together experts from several diverse fields to present state of the art accounts of how the visual world enters two small holes in our heads and is reconstructed to give us the rich impressions of color, movement, and shape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, significant, indeed dramatic, advances have occurred in the study of perception. These have been made possible by, and, in fact, in clude methodological advances such as the development of signal detection theory and the application of linear systems analysis to auditory and visual per ception. They are reflected in an interest in the study of ecologically valid perceptual problems, e. g. , control of locomotion, speech perception, reading, perceptual-motor coordination, and perception of events. At the same time, exciting new insights have been gained to some of the classical problems of perception-stereoscopic vision, color vision, attention, position constancy, to mention a few. A broad, comparative approach to perception has also been taken. This approach, which includes the detailed study of human infant per ception as well as cross-cultural and cross-species investigations, has given us a very broad perspective of the perceptual process. In this context, the present volume inaugurates a new series entitled' 'Per ception and Perceptual Development: A Critical Review Series. " The editors are particularly gratified by the enthusiastic support for their ideas by Seymour Weingarten of Plenum Press. He and the editorial staff of Plenum Press have been of immense help in initiating the series as well as helping with the details of this first volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of contemporary research in the vision sciences, reflecting the rapid advances of recent years. Visual science is the model system for neuroscience, its findings relevant to all other areas. This essential reference to contemporary visual neuroscience covers the extraordinary range of the field today, from molecules and cell assemblies to systems and therapies. It provides a state-of-the art companion to the earlier book The Visual Neurosciences (MIT Press, 2003). This volume covers the dramatic advances made in the last decade, offering new topics, new authors, and new chapters. The New Visual Neurosciences assembles groundbreaking research, written by international authorities. Many of the 112 chapters treat seminal topics not included in the earlier book. These new topics include retinal feature detection; cortical connectomics; new approaches to mid-level vision and spatiotemporal perception; the latest understanding of how multimodal integration contributes to visual perception; new theoretical work on the role of neural oscillations in information processing; and new molecular and genetic techniques for understanding visual system development. An entirely new section covers invertebrate vision, reflecting the importance of this research in understanding fundamental principles of visual processing. Another new section treats translational visual neuroscience, covering recent progress in novel treatment modalities for optic nerve disorders, macular degeneration, and retinal cell replacement. The New Visual Neurosciences is an indispensable reference for students, teachers, researchers, clinicians, and anyone interested in contemporary neuroscience. Associate Editors Marie Burns, Joy Geng, Mark Goldman, James Handa, Andrew Ishida, George R.
