Book Synopsis Application of Vegetation Science to Grassland Husbandry by : W. Krause
Download or read book Application of Vegetation Science to Grassland Husbandry written by W. Krause and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WERNER KRAUSE INTRODUCTION GENERAL COMMENTS ON THIS VOLUME The subject" Application of vegetation science to grassland husbandry" is not limited by geographical boundaries. It is pro posed to cover this subject in an internationally applicable work of reference. However, to avoid omissions it would have to em brace all the diversity of grassland from the Arctic to the Equa tor. The term "application" requires that the papers contained herein take into account both generally relevant scientific knowl edge and the special needs of practical farming. The latter are not satisfied solely by the laws of vegetation science; the changing effects of the market, politics, the distribution of wealth and poverty, highly developed technology and the continued use of archaic farming methods must all be considered. To try to cover all this adequately in one volume of ap proximately 550 pages is a hopeless task. The editor and the authors had to limit themselves to presenting a selection of prob lems and attempts to solve them, with the aim that these exam ples should indicate how much vegetation science can contribute to grassland husbandry, and the scope of this contribution is broadened by the references quoted. The arrangement of the sections within this volume does not lend itself to specific suggestions for the management of individual systems. However, grassland husbandry can expect to obtain from this work an'insight into some overall general rela tionships, which could assist the adviser in the formulation of more specific improvement plans.
Book Synopsis Diagnosis of the Nitrogen Status in Crops by : Gilles Lemaire
Download or read book Diagnosis of the Nitrogen Status in Crops written by Gilles Lemaire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a link between theoretical and applied aspects of plant nutrition and agriculture, this book introduces new concepts in plant nutrition. It shows how these can be applied in order to assess the nitrogen status in crops and to improve nitrogen nutrition through optimized N fertilization management. In this way economic benefits can be obtained, while at the same time preventing detrimental effects on the environment. The main agricultural crops - grasses, wheat, barley, Durum wheat, maize, sorghum, grain legumes and potatoes - are covered. The book will be an invaluable source for agronomists.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Weed Science written by Robert L Zimdahl and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Weed Science, Fifth Edition, provides the latest information on this constantly advancing area of study. Placing weed management in the largest context of weed research and science, the book presents the latest advances in the role, control and potential uses of weed plants. From the emergence and genetic foundation of weeds, to the latest means of control and environmental impact, the book uses an ecological framework to explore the role of responsible and effective weed control in agriculture. In addition, users will find discussions of related areas where research is needed for additional understanding. Explored topics include the roles of culture, economics and politics in weed management, all areas that enable scientists and students to further understand the larger effects on society. - Winner of a 2019 The William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award (College) (Texty) from the Textbook Association of America - Completely revised with 35% new content - Contains expanded coverage of ethnobotany, the specific identity and role of invasive weed species, organic agriculture, and herbicide resistance in GM crops - Includes an emphasis on herbicide resistance and molecular biology, both of which have come to dominate weed science research - Covers all traditional aspects of weed science as well as current research - Provides broad coverage, including relevant related subjects like weed ecology and weed population genetics
Book Synopsis Breeding strategies for sustainable forage and turf grass improvement by : Susanne Barth
Download or read book Breeding strategies for sustainable forage and turf grass improvement written by Susanne Barth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 4th – 8th of September 2011, the Eucarpia Fodder Crops and Amenity Grasses Section, held its 29th Meeting in the surroundings of Dublin Castle in Ireland. The theme of the meeting was ‘Breeding strategies for sustainable forage and turf grass improvement’. Grasslands cover a significant proportion of the land mass of the world, and play a pivotal role in global food production. At the same time we are faced with several challenges that affect the way in which we think about this valuable set of resources. The population of the world is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050, and increase of about one third relative to today’s levels. This population increase will be focused in urban areas, and in what are currently viewed as “developing” countries, meaning that the buying power of this increased population will be greater – shifting the balance of demand from staple crops to high value items such as meat and dairy products. Overall that the world will have to approximately double agricultural output across all categories of food to meet the demands of this larger, urbanised population. This is occurring against a backdrop of equally large challenges in terms of global climate change. Agriculture is already a significant contributor to e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and soil erosion. The situation is made more complex by an increased emphasis on biofuels as a solution for our imminent oil shortage, resulting in increased competition between land utilised for food and fuel. In short, agriculture must continue to feed the world, whilst not contributing to damaging it further. It must be sustainable. Plant breeding plays a significant but frequently understated role in meeting the challenges presented by this complex and changing scenario. However, plant breeding and improvement is itself undergoing radical change driven by technology. This book explores how forage and turf breeding is changing and adapting to meet these challenges using the technological advances being experienced in plant breeding as a whole.
