Book excerpt: The Spanish Tragedy, or Hieronimo is Mad Again is an Elizabethan tragedy written by Thomas Kyd between 1582 and 1592. Highly popular and influential in its time, The Spanish Tragedy established a new genre in English theatre, the revenge play or revenge tragedy. Its plot contains several violent murders and includes as one of its characters a personification of Revenge. The Spanish Tragedy was often referred to (or parodied) in works written by other Elizabethan playwrights, including William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Christopher Marlowe. Many elements of The Spanish Tragedy, such as the play-within-a-play used to trap a murderer and a ghost intent on vengeance, appear in Shakespeare's Hamlet. (Thomas Kyd is frequently proposed as the author of the hypothetical Ur-Hamlet that may have been one of Shakespeare's primary sources for Hamlet.)

In Lukas Erne's book, The Spanish Tragedy - the most popular of all plays on the English Renaissance stage - receives the extensive scholarly and criticaltreatment it deserves, including a full reception and modern stage history. Yet as Erne shows, Thomas Kyd is much more than the author of a single masterpiece. Don Horatio (partly extant in The First Part of Hieronimo), the lost early Hamlet, Soliman and Perseda, and Cornelia all belong to whatemerges in this study for the first time as a coherent dramatic oeuvre.

Book excerpt: Doing Kyd reads Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, the box-office and print success of its time, as the play that established the revenge genre in England and served as a ‘pattern and precedent’ for the golden generation of early modern playwrights, from Marlowe and Shakespeare to Middleton, Webster and Ford. Interdisciplinary in approach and accessible in style, this collection is crucial in two respects: firstly, it has a wide spectrum, addressing readers with interests in the play from its early impact as the first sixteenth-century revenge tragedy, to its afterlife in print, on the stage, in screen adaptation and bibliographical studies. Secondly, the collection appears at a time when Kyd and his play are back in the spotlight, through renewed critical interest, several new stage productions between 2009 and 2013, and its firm presence in higher-education curriculum for English and drama.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Tragedy: A Play Unfortunately, this investigation is beset with great difficulties; and thus considerable discrepancy of opinion prevails even on some of the most important points. All detailed criticism, as well as a full statement of authorities - I have only room here to mention my especial indebtedness to Sarrazin's book, Thomas Kyd und sein Kreis, and Mr. Sidney Lee's article in the Dictionary of National Biography - must be reserved for my forthcoming larger edition, of which the preface and notes in this little volume form merely a short extract. Known facts of Kyd's life. Materials for a biography of Thomas Kyd are still but scanty. Yet we are now fortunate enough to possess as a starting-point the fact that Thomas Kyd was baptized Nov. 6, 1558, in the Church of St Mary Woolnoth, in the City - a discovery which we owe to Mr. Gordon Goodwin; see Notes and Queries, 8th series, vol. v. pp. 305-6 (21st April 1894). Thus we know now for certain that Kyd was older by a good lustrum than Marlowe or Shakspere. This seems to me a very important consideration, in view of the astounding youthfulness of the creators of the English drama - some, after a glorious record, being carried off in early youth, and the greatest of them storming the very heights of Parnassus before he could be called a man. Book excerpt: The first fully-fledged example of a revenge tragedy, the genre that became so influential in later Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1589) occupies a very special place in the history of English Renaissance drama. Hieronimo, Knight-Marshal of Spain during its war with Portugal, fails to obtain justice when his son is murdered for courting Bel-Imperia, the Duke of Castile's daughter, and decides to take justice into his own hands... This new student edition has been freshly revised by Professor Andrew Gurr to incorporate the latest stage history and critical interpretations of the play. It also appends the scenes that were added in 1602, discusses Elizabethan attitudes to revenge, the Senecan features of the play and the significance of the Anglo-Spanish conflict in the 1580s.

Book excerpt: This paper examines three of the earliest Elizabethan's revenge tragedies, Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Christopher Marlowe's The Jew of Malta, and William Shakespeare's Titus Andrenicus, in order to determine their significance in the development of Elizabethan drama. After briefly considering classical and contemporary influences, this study attempts to show how Kyd, Marlowe, and Shakespeare, building upon these influences, created dramas of action and variety which helped establish a dramatic style which was peculiarly Elizabethan.
