Book excerpt: In hybrid organic spintronic devices, the active regions are essentially the hybrid interfaces. The first part of this thesis shows that molecular exchange bias in Co/MTPP and Co/CoPc systems is not an interface effect but originates from air-driven oxidation of the Co films. The second part introduces a new Ferromagnetic Nuclear Resonance methodology which showed that 15 monolayers of ZnTPP are required to obtain heterostructures with continuous molecular films and that their morphology depends on the nature of the underlayer (Co or Fe). In addition, the interfaces are asymmetrical with sharp Co/ZnTPP interface and rough ZnTPP/Co interface. These analyses have been confirmed by TEM. Moreover, FNR showed that no interfacial magnetic hardening effect exists in these systems. This is consistent with the fact that the Co/ZnTPP interfaces are governed by weak van der Waals interactions and that no signature of strong chemical bonds between interfacial ZnTPP molecules and Co atoms has been identified. Finally, the magnetic measurements suggest that an antiferromagnetic indirect exchange coupling takes place between the FM electrodes through the organic film.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the optical characterization of interfacial exchange coupling interaction in ferromagnetic bilayer heterostructures. Both static and dynamic magnetic response are investigated in the exchange-coupled Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer system using static magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and time-resolved magneto optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) techniques. The goal of this thesis is to understand the underlying physics of the interfacial exchange coupling effect on the ultrafast spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic metal/ferromagnetic semiconductor bilayer heterostructure. Our finding provides a viable pathway for designing advanced semiconductor spintronic devices for ultrafast low-power spin manipulation. First, a significant enhancement of the excitation efficiency of coherent magnetization precession is observed in the ferromagnetically exchangecoupled Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer heterostructures at temperatures below the Curie temperature of (Ga,Mn)As, TC = 50 K, under photoexcitation of lowfluence, near-infrared pump pulses. The coherent magnetization precession persists to room temperature, indicating that proximity-induced ferromagnetism plays an important role in the optical excitation mechanism. A subsequent simulation of the temperature-dependent precession amplitude and frequency behavior is performed based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, suggesting that the high-efficiency excitation mechanism can be attributed to the modulation of the exchange coupling field at the interfacial area, which is induced by the emergence of the dynamic exchange coupling effect between the precessing magnetizations in the two ferromagnets. Second, the Gilbert damping property of the magnetization precession in the Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer system is studied. At temperatures below the Curie temperature of (Ga,Mn)As, TC = 50 K, ultrafast pump excitation creates a counter-precessing, exchange-coupled mode in the ferromagnetic bilayer. The precessing magnetization in the Co2FeAl layer transfers a pure spin current directly into the (Ga,Mn)As layer at a certain intensity of external magnetic field where the Fe(Co) spins and the Mn spins precess at the same frequency. A photo-induced enhancement of the Gilbert damping constant alpha is observed, indicating that spin-angular momentum is transferred at the resonance magnetic fields. This can be attributed to the effect of the interfacial dynamic exchange coupling interaction between the precessing magnetizations in two ferromagnetic layers. A corresponding phase shift of the magnetization precession is also observed at the resonance field where the Gilbert damping peak appears.

The strong correlated electron system involves the notable properties of colossal magnetoresistance, ferroelectric tunneling and spin transport, with the coupling of electron, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Their rich functional behavior is of potential use for nanoelectronics and data storage. Particularly interesting are the mulitferroic materials, which exhibit simultaneously electric and magnetic ordering properties. Understanding the interface coupling mechanism of these two order parameters are critical to future development of high-performance spintronic devices. The goal of this dissertation is to elucidate the interfacial magnetoelectric (ME) coupling with optical characterization method -- magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation (MSHG), which is sensitive to the interface due to the broken spatial inversion symmetry. First, ME coupling at the interface of BaTiO3 (BTO)/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) is observed by applying an external electric field. The voltage-dependent magnetic contrast reveals a sharp transition from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order occurring at positive voltage (applied to LSMO contact). This novel effect is attributed to interface ME coupling. Strain or ferroelectric (FE) polarization induced mechanisms do not play an important role in this system. A new mechanism is proposed -- minority spin injection -- to modulate the interface magnetization. The minority spin injection at the interface weakens the double-exchange coupling of nearby eg electrons, thereby weakening the FM ordering. Thus the dominant AFM superexchange coupling of localized t2g electrons causes the phase transition at positive voltage. The magnetic transition is shifted to higher voltage by reducing the carrier concentration of BTO. Second, a non-multiferroic heterostructure -- SrTiO3 (STO)/La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO)/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) -- is studied to elucidate further the interface ME effect. The magnetization transition is observed but shifted to negative voltage. The LSMO is pushed to higher hole doping level due to the STO layer which acts as a hole donating layer, while the LCMO interlayer at the medium doping level displays complicated CE-type AFM phase. Thus, a negative voltage is required to lower the hole doping level of LSMO to induce the FM phase. The magnetic contrast reappears at high positive voltage, indicating the occurrence of an A-type AFM phase, which is stable at high hole doping concentration. The results of this dissertation show that the interface magnetic phase of LSMO can be controlled by an applied electric field through modulation of the hole doping level.

Book excerpt: We identified and investigated some of the scientific and technically most challenging issues in thin film magnetism focusing on epitaxially grown layers of specific L10 ordered, intermetallic, heterostructures with well-controlled crystallography and interface structures. Specifically, we addressed antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructures, exhibiting exchange bias (EB) in both in-plane (MnPd/Fe) and perpendicular (IrMn/(Co/Pt){sub n}) geometries, and ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic (Co/Y3Fe5O12) bilayers with strong interlayer exchange coupling and exhibiting spin reorientation transitions. In the former case, the work included experimental and theoretical studies to gain more fundamental insight into the origin and magnitude of EB, as well as to address important aspects of EB such as the asymmetry in the magnetic reversal mechanism, the role of interfacial structure, including compensated or uncompensated spins, AF domains, competing anisotropies and the angular dependence of the magnetization reversal process. Exchange bias is central to many magnetic technologies and driven by the fast development of nanotechnology, there is much interest in understanding the phenomenon of exchange bias on the nanoscale. By patterning, as the FM domain size reaches a lateral scale comparable to the AF domain size (~100nm), each nano-element can be treated as a separate and isolated exchange bias system that behaves independently. Therefore, the non-averaged, intrinsic, exchange bias, in all its complexity, can be studied. Such size and dimensionality effects, particularly in structures with lateral dimension of the order of their domain sizes, were studied by developing and implementing a novel Nano-imprint as well as convention optical lithography/patterning. However, one limitation of the NIL method is that after imprinting the material-deposition or -evaporation has to be done at around room temperature in order to keep the resists structure undisturbed. As a result, the method is unsuitable for epitaxial growth, since the latter often involves growth at elevated temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature of the resist. Therefore, a mask transfer NIL process was developed to grow epitaxial nanostructure arrays at elevated temperatures where organic resists are rendered unstable. In the case of the metal/oxide heterostructures, the domain structure of the metal is carefully modulated by that of the underlying oxide, opening the possibility of carrying out novel experiments to study spin-dependent domain-wall scattering and quantify domain wall resistance in mesoscopic geometries. Utilizing state-of-the-art characterization methods, using synchrotron radiation and electron holography, we addressed the critical role of all aspects of the microstructure, at relevant length scales, in determining these specific magnetic properties. Two significant highlights of this project were the use of photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) work to elucidate their asymmetric magnetization reversal mechanism and the use of element-specific X-ray magnetic reflectivity and x-ray resonant scattering to probe buried interfaces, both of importance in understanding the fundamental physics of exchange bias. In the latter case, a complex magnetic interfacial configuration in Fe/MnPd, consisting of a 2-monolayer-thick induced ferromagnetic region, and pinned uncompensated Mn moments that reach far deeper (~13 Å), both in the antiferromagnet, were found. Such epitaxial EB samples also show in-plane reorientation transitions, determined by the competition between the interface exchange coupling and the intrinsic uniaxial energies, and is driven by the temperature, as well as the thickness of MnPd and Fe layers. First, I will present our work on interface interactions in magnetic thin film heterostructures. A majority of interesting phenomena in magnetic heterostructures are caused primarily by the interface interactions. In exchange bias system CoO/MgO/Fe/Ag(001), the role of frozen and rotatable antiferromagnetic spins in exchange bias system was investigated using X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism (XMLD). In the Py/FeMn/Ni/Cu(001) system, the indirect coupling through an antiferromagnetic spacer layer was studied through anisotropy measurements using Rotating-Field Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (ROTMOKE). Second, I will present our work on artificial topological spin structures. Traditionally, research on nanostructured magnetic materials has focused on the study of uniformly magnetized thin films. With the increasing capability to prepare and manipulate non-uniform spin configurations in recent years, various topological spin structure have been realized. In magnetic thin films, magnetic vortex states can be stabilized by reducing the lateral dimension of the magnetic thin film to the nanoscale due to the increased shape anisotropy. By combining this shape anisotropy and interlayer exchange coupling at the interface, we showed that more complex topological spin structures such as spin skyrmions and hedgehog spin merons can be stabilized and manipulated. By utilizing uniaxial strain in a ferroelectric-ferromagnetic system Co/Cu/PMN-PT(011), we demonstrated a method to manipulate the circulation of a magnetic vortex state using strain.
