Book Synopsis Resisting Education: A Cross-National Study on Systems and School Effects by : Jannick Demanet

This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how school-level features affect student resistance to education from a comparative angle, taking into account cross-national differences. All over the world, policy makers, school administrators, teachers, and parents are dealing with students who resist education. Resisting school might ultimately lead to unqualified dropout, and it is therefore crucial to understand what triggers resistance in students. The book uses the ISCY data set to study multilevel questions in detail. It does so based on the view that system effects and school effects intertwine: system-level policy measures affect student outcomes in part by shaping school-level features, and school effects may differ according to certain system-level features. We start from an overarching theoretical framework that ties the various city-specific insights together, and contains empirical studies from Barcelona, Bergen, Ghent, Montréal Reykjavik, Sacramento, and Turku. It shows that, in all countries, the act of resisting school is more likely to occur among the socio-economically disadvantaged, and those in the most disadvantaged schools. However, educational system features, including tracking, free school choice, and school autonomy, are important driving factors of the differences between schools. As such, systems have the tools to curb between-school differences in resistance. Previous research turns resistance into a problem of individual students. However, if school or system features engender resistance to school, policy initiatives directed at individual students may solve the problem only partially.

Book Synopsis College in Black and White by : Walter R. Allen
Download or read book College in Black and White written by Walter R. Allen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-07-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports findings from the National Study of Black College Students, a comprehensive study of Black college students' characteristics, experiences, and achievements as related to student background, institutional context, and interpersonal relationships. Over 4,000 undergraduates and graduate/professional students on sixteen campuses (eight historically Black and eight predominantly White) participated in this mail survey. Using these and other data, this book systematically examines the current state of Black students in U.S. higher education. Until now, our understanding has been limited by inadequate data, misguided theories, and failure to properly interpret the Black American reality. This volume challenges our assumptions and contributes to the growing body of knowledge about Black student experiences and outcomes in higher education.

Download or read book Cultural Diversity And The Schools written by James Lynch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-01-31 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992. One of the major problems facing societies in almost all parts of the world is the inadequate accommodation of social equity with cultural diversity. The crisis emanating from neglect of this issue can be seen in societies as different and wide apart as the Soviet Union, India, Pakistan, the United States and the United Kingdom. This series of books is committed to the premise that racism and all other forms of negative prejudice are detrimental to a harmonious and healthy pluralist world society, and that it is the duty of all good democratic citizens to combat them, but that there are many valid routes by which such prejudice can be challenged, and that there are other kinds of prejudice and abuse which must also be combatted. This is Volume Two of a series of four on Cultural Diversity in Schools.
