Families with high socioeconomic status often hire independent educational consultants (IEC) to assist their family in college search activities. A review of the literature indicated a gap in the literature regarding IECs’ understanding of the factors which influence their client families in making the decision of whether to include a school in the family’s consideration set. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to investigate and explore the factors that IECs believe would likely influence families as they build their consideration set for their traditionally-aged, first-time undergraduate students. The study was guided by two research questions: 1. How do IECs rank the factors that influence parents to include a school in their traditionally-aged undergraduate student’s consideration set? 2. How do IECs describe the factors that influence parents of prospective undergraduate students? In Phase 1, a Q-sort activity was completed by IECs (n = 33) recruited from throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. In Phase 2, IECs (n = 5) participated in a dyad and triad to ascertain rich insights regarding the factors that they believe would most likely influence parents on the inclusion of a school in their family’s consideration set. Data from Phase 1 were analyzed using SPSS software and qmethodsoftware.com including factor analysis of the Q-sort configurations (Watts & Stenner, 2005). Phase 2 data were analyzed using a systematic analysis of the transcripts for each dyad and triad using similar coding across transcripts to uncover common themes (Kruger & Casey, 2009). Findings from both phases were analyzed for convergence and divergence. The results of the study indicate that IECs believe that cost, the availability of scholarships, the distance from home, parents of other college students, and the US News and World Report rankings all influence whether a family includes a school in their consideration set. Results may be used to inform decision-making by higher education marketers and enrollment managers as they create outreach strategies that will influence full or fuller pay families to include their schools in the family’s consideration set.

One hundred and ninety-eight first-year college students completed measures assessing family cohesion; relationship maintenance behaviors expressed within their family systems; and academic, social, and personal-emotional stress. Results indicated that family cohesion is significantly and negatively related to students' experiences of academic, social, and personal-emotional stress. Further, hierarchical regression and structural equation modeling provided insight to the additive influence of relationship maintenance behaviors on student stress. Analyses provided limited support for a mediation model, however, results demonstrated the importance of both family cohesion and relationship maintenance behaviors on academic, social, and personal-emotional stress during students' transitions to college.

Despite evidence showing that a college degree yields far-reaching benefits, critics of higher education increasingly argue that college “does not pay off” and some students - namely, disadvantaged prospective college goers - would be better served by forgoing higher education. But debates about the value of college often fail to carefully consider what is required to speak knowledgeably about the benefits –what a person’s life might look like had they not completed college, or their college counterfactual. In Overcoming the Odds sociologist Jennie E. Brand reveals the benefits of completing college by comparing life outcomes of college graduates with their college counterfactuals. Drawing on two cohorts of nationally representative data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics National Longitudinal Surveys program, Brand uses matching and machine learning methods to estimate the effects of college completion across students with varying likelihoods of completing four-year degrees. To illustrate her findings, Brand describes outcomes using matched vignettes of college and non-college graduates. Brand shows that four-year college completion enables graduates to increase wages and household income, while also circumventing unemployment, low-wage work, job instability, poverty, and social assistance. Completing college also increases civic engagement. Most of these benefits are larger for disadvantaged than for more advantaged students, rendering arguments that college has limited benefits for unlikely graduates as flawed. Brand concludes that greater long-term earnings, and less job instability and unemployment, and thus more tax revenue, less reliance on public assistance, and high levels of volunteering indicate that public investment in higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds yields far-reaching collective benefits. She asserts that it is better for our society when more people complete college. Overcoming the Odds is an innovative and enlightening exploration of how college can transform lives.

Students from economically disadvantaged families continue to lag far behind their wealthier peers in rates of degree completion. Research examining the role of parents and family during college has frequently portrayed low-income families one-dimensionally as inhibiting their children's postsecondary opportunities by lacking important financial and educational resources. Yet there is emerging evidence that these parents can and do provide important forms of support to children once they are in college. This dissertation examines the family dynamics patterns of economically disadvantaged college students, and their related influence on first-year college adjustment and second-year persistence. The study draws on theories of family capital and family kinscripts to frame social support between low-income college students and their families as a two-way exchange process. Using quantitative and student interview data from a unique statewide sample of traditional-aged low-income undergraduates, the study highlights the many ways that disadvantaged families support their children in college, but also illuminates the complex trade offs low-income students may face when navigating the pursuit of individual goals alongside responsibilities to fulfill family obligations.

Book excerpt: My dissertation focuses on an important higher education policy issue: college completion of nontraditional-age students and the role that individual and institutional attributes play in support of their outcomes. To address this area of concern, my dissertation examines the effects of student background characteristics, collegiate and noncollegiate experiences, financial aid programs, and institutional characteristics on nontraditional-age students' college persistence and completion. Building upon the Nontraditional Student Attrition Model (Bean & Metzner, 1985) and the Ecological Human Development Model (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), I propose the ecological nontraditional student persistence model as a conceptual framework to examine the topic. I use data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09). Adopting descriptive and logistic regression analyses, my dissertation illuminates how persistence and degree attainment are associated with the aforementioned variables. Findings suggest that female nontraditional-age students are disadvantaged in college completion while nontraditional-age students with higher family incomes and who are frequently involved in social activities on campus report are advantaged, as are federal and institutional grant recipients. Because nontraditional-age students are a particularly underserved student population at four-year institutions, academic programs and student services should be tailored to their needs. I also suggest revisiting a matrix for financial aid programs for working nontraditional-age students, and awarding credits for prior learning.
