Book excerpt: The superconducting proximity effect allows for the introduction of pair correlations into otherwise normal metals provided that they are coupled through a sufficiently transparent junction. The influence of this proximity effect manifests itself by modifying both the normal layer sheet resistance in the proximity affected region, Rs, and the junction conductance across the N-S boundary, Gc. These two quantities are impossible to measure simultaneously with any single two terminal device even if it is a four point measurement. However, a new three terminal device structure allows us to make two independent four point voltage measurements, which permits the extraction of these two intrinsic aspects of the proximity effect when combined with simple Ohm0́9s law modeling. Devices with completely in-situ junctions between niobium and heavily doped n-GaAs and n-InAs were fabricated via molecular beam epitaxy. In order to reduce the Schottky barrier, a graded and delta-doped InGaAs cap was inserted at the interface. Careful construction of the doping profile in the cap allows for extremely transparent junctions just prior to the onset of superconductivity, the most transparent Nb-GaAs junctions yet reported. The transparency of the junction can be evaluated by calculating the number of available quantum channels between the two different Fermi surfaces and using the Landauer formalism to determine the ideal junction conductance. Comparison to the experimental junction conductance permits the discovery of the fundamental transmission coefficient for transport across the N-S interface. If the semiconducting depth is small enough the presence of correlations in the semiconductor are observed. Samples with deeper depths exhibit no direct evidence of superconductivity inside the semiconductor. Samples consisting of doped InAs were also fabricated and measured. These samples exhibit almost perfect contact between the superconductor and the semiconductor and pair correlations are observed in the semiconductor despite their thickness. These observations conƠ̐1rm that the manifestation of the superconducting proximity effect is due to the competition between the normal and superconducting reservoirs. When the semiconducting layers are thick there exists a region that is unaffected by superconductivity. This region acts as an effective normal reservoir. The weak coupling at the Nb-InGaAs interface limits the strength of pairing in the semiconductor, and if a normal reservoir is present the superconductivity is completely suppressed. This effect is not seen in the more transparent InAs-Nb interfaces. This implies that the InAs is sufficiently transparent that the strong coupling to the superconductor across the N-S interface overcomes the negative effect on pairing due to the normal reservoir and a proximity affected region in the semiconductor near the interface is created. In summary, we are able to tune the strength of the induced pair correlations in the semiconductor by adjusting either the transmission coefficient of the N-S interface and by turning on or off the coupling to a normal reservoir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the properties, growth and applications of semiconducting transparent thin films, this book provides a single source reference for researchers in the field. It discusses the underlying physics of such films, and their commercial applications in such areas as gas sensors and temperature control coatings in the aerospace industry. It is clearly written, with sections on the different materials, different growth techniques, electrical properties, optical properties, and selected applications, for coatings, sensors, detectors and display devices. It is a valuable reference tool for the established researcher, and provides a comprehensive introcution to the subject for graduates of electrical and electronic engineering. The international team of authors, under the leadership of one of the world's authorities on the subject have written a book which has become the standard work in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent superconducting thin films studies have attempted to create pure metal layer films of Niobium and Titanium with the same properties of superconducting NbTi wire used in industry. These studies have all reported depression of the superconducting properties of the pure metal films which has been attributed to the proximity effect. The purpose of this research project was to construct several NbTi films composed of alloyed layers to overcome the proximity depression of superconducting properties. These films are unique in that they are the only films with both alloyed Nb/Ti superconducting and normal layers reported in the literature. Films with several different compositions and bilayer geometries were designed, constructed and their superconducting properties characterized. The films were created by the RF sputtering of alloyed targets at ambient temperatures. Characterization of the composition of the films was performed by microprobe analysis at two different electron beam voltages. A simulation of the electron beam excitation volume of the microprobe was performed to determine the difference in the two analyses and to determine whether the substrate would be found upon microprobe examination. X-ray diffraction was utilized to determine the bilayer spacing and to give a qualitative understanding of the alignment of the film microstructures. The critical temperature and upper critical magnetic field were measured to determine the superconducting properties and the extent of the proximity effect in the films. The microprobe analysis found most films to be very pure alloys except for films 6001, 6002, 6003(1) in which there were between 1-8 wt% of impurities. All films contained compositional variations on the order of 10 wt% from the design values. X-ray diffraction indicated agreement with the designed bilayer spacing in all films but 6003(2), 6005(1), and 6005(2) which had bilayer periods larger than originally designed. The proximity effect was not observed in any of the film's superconducting properties examined. T[subscript]c and H[subscript]c2 properties for the films without impurities had properties equal to that of bulk Nb/47wt% Ti. Films 6001, 6003(1) had depressed T[subscript]c and H[subscript]c2 values which were attributed to their impurity contamination. The low Ti composition in many of the films points to the inaccuracy of the deposition parameters when the films were first processed. The lack of T[subscript]c and H[subscript]c2 depression normally seen in other film studies with bilayer periods between 10-30 nm demonstrates that alloyed layers should be used to overcome the proximity effect in multilayer thin film superconductor studies. Overcoming the proximity effect should translate into a better understanding of flux pinning mechanisms in the material and increased superconducting critical currents in these films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the last of three volumes of the extensively revised and updated second edition of the Handbook of Superconductivity. The past twenty years have seen rapid progress in superconducting materials, which exhibit one of the most remarkable physical states of matter ever to be discovered. Superconductivity brings quantum mechanics to the scale of the everyday world. Viable applications of superconductors rely fundamentally on an understanding of these intriguing phenomena and the availability of a range of materials with bespoke properties to meet practical needs. While the first volume covers fundamentals and various classes of materials, the second addresses processing of these into various shapes and configurations needed for applications, and ends with chapters on refrigeration methods necessary to attain the superconducting state and the desired performance. This third volume starts with a wide range of methods permitting one to characterize both the materials and various end products of processing. Subsequently, diverse classes of both large scale and electronic applications are described. Volume 3 ends with a glossary relevant to all three volumes. Key Features: Covers the depth and breadth of the field Includes contributions from leading academics and industry professionals across the world Provides hands-on familiarity with the characterization methods and offers descriptions of representative examples of practical applications A comprehensive reference, the handbook is suitable for both graduate students and practitioners in experimental physics, materials science, and multiple engineering disciplines, including electronic and electrical, chemical, mechanical, metallurgy and others.
