Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to improve my teaching practice, as well as my second grade students' success with two-digit addition concepts, by allowing them to choose the manipulative tools to explore problems and justify solutions. I examined how allowing my students this choice influenced their attitudes, achievement, and explanations of their thought processes. I found that allowing students to choose their own manipulatives had positive influences in all three areas. Pre- and post-test results showed an overall shift toward more positive mathematics attitudes, as well as increased academic achievement with two-digit addition concepts. Students also demonstrated changes in the ways they used the manipulatives, as well as how they explained their solutions to two-digit addition problems.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine my own practice of teaching place value and the influence virtual manipulatives had, in addition to physical manipulatives, on place value understanding of my second grade students. I wanted to see how adding a base-ten computer applet might better meet the needs of all learners while also meeting the needs of today's technological classroom. Through this study, I found that both physical and virtual manipulatives helped students acquire place value concepts. I found that virtual manipulatives had features that engaged students in a way that increased their mathematical language, increased students' ability to represent more conceptual understanding of composing and decomposing numbers, and express enthusiasm towards mathematics. A pretest and posttest revealed that students' academic performance increased. While research on virtual manipulatives and mathematical achievement is fairly recent, this study offers insight to other classroom teachers and the research community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how second graders use writing and language when they are learning to add multidigit numbers in mathematics class. Second grade students were taught addition conceptually with a focus on sharing their strategies and thought processes with each other during the mathematics lesson. Two social norms were established with students so that sharing information and asking for clarity when they did not understand would be natural and expected. Students kept a daily mathematics journal to answer the class's Problems of the Day. Patterns found in student journals indicated three stages of multidigit learning. In Stage One, students used little or no words to explain their solution, illustrations show students using counting by ones strategies. Stage Two represents students using appropriate mathematics strategies and vocabulary to explain their solutions in detail. Lastly, Stage Three consists of students solving multidigit problems with little or no word explaining their solution process and illustrations are few. Results of the study indicated that students' oral explanations of solutions to addition problems included more detail compared to students' written justification of similar problems.

Book excerpt: Children who have mathematics learning disabilities have been a neglected group in terms or both learning disabilities and mathematics education research. In addition, these children are usually not identified until late elementary school after they have experienced failure in mathematics. The present study examined second-grade average-math achievers (AMAs) and low-math achievers (LMAs) who were at-risk for mathematics learning disabilities. Through a clinical interview format, interviewers tracked the students' progression in two-digit addition and subtraction in terms of accuracy, conceptual structure, and representational method. Memory processing characteristics were also identified for the two groups of students. It was found that the AMAs and the LMAs did not differ on the accuracy of their computations but rather on their use of conceptual structures and representational methods. The LMAs used the more immature unitary conception for a longer period of time than did the AMAs. The LMAs also used the less sophisticated concrete representational methods in solution procedures more frequently than the more advanced methods of mental strategies and standard written algorithms used by the AMAs. The LMAs were also found to have decreased automaticity for labeling numerical information, poorer basic fact retrieval, and lower performance on a composite of memory tasks. Looking at the conceptual, processing, and achievement differences between AMAs and LMAs may provide information that will enable professionals to better identify and intervene in the mathematics education of children at-risk for mathematics learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that the use of manipulatives during math instruction may or may not increase student achievement in problem solving among elementary students (Mistretta, 2000). The purpose of this study is to how active involvement with manipulatives affects students ability in mathematical problem solving. This study will involve two groups of second graders; one group who will be using manipulatives during problem solving in mathematics and another group who will not use manipulatives as part of mathematics instruction.
