Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Working under an activity theory framework, the purpose of this study was to investigate how learning experiences in special education teacher preparation programs related to teacher candidates in the context of reading instruction for struggling readers and students with disabilities. More specifically, this study examined the interactions among special education preservice teachers, their university preparation in reading, and their practicum experiences, with the ultimate goal to understand how these interactions influenced the pre-service teachers' appropriation of conceptual and practical tools. Investigating how pre-service teachers interact with their various preparatory experiences is important to understanding the extent to which teacher education makes a difference for prospective teachers. To understand the influences on special education pre-service teacher appropriation of conceptual and practical tools grounded theory methods were used. Six special education preservice teachers, who taught reading to struggling readers and students with disabilities during a practicum experience, participated in the study. In addition to pre-service teachers, their practicum cooperating teachers, field supervisors, and reading methods course instructors also participated. The data sources consisted of participant interviews, videotaped classroom 12 observations, the Reading in Special Education (RISE) observation instrument, pre and post concept maps, and prior experiences and beliefs surveys.

Book excerpt: Preservice teachers of reading develop their beliefs and understanding of reading pedagogy in diverse ways. While they do gather some knowledge and understanding from their university preparation courses and their practicum experiences in classrooms, a less transparent source of emerging understandings of reading pedagogy is their own experiences with reading instruction as students. Using a qualitative case study methodology, this dissertation study investigated how three preservice teachers interested in early childhood education developed understandings of reading pedagogy. Data collected included three interviews; two prompted reflective writings on their evolving understandings; observation in the participants' reading processes course; and an interview with the course instructor. Findings indicated that preservice teachers' biographies influenced both their understanding of how to teach reading and their attitudes toward it. Also, they favoured practicum experience over university coursework as a source of knowledge, and experienced tensions when their own beliefs contradicted the ideas espoused in the university course. In general, preservice teachers' beliefs and experiences prior to starting their teacher education program caused resistance toward research-based theories and practices related to reading. Findings imply that teacher educators need to be explicit in providing many opportunities for their students to discuss and make sense of their epistemological understandings in relation to areas of tension with reading pedagogy.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine preservice teacher's knowledge bases and beliefs about literacy and the impact of their personal reading experiences on literacy instruction. Methodology: This study utilized mixed methodology. This included survey data and open coding. Data were collected using a survey, an annotated DRTA lesson plan, and a personal reading experience narrative. Results: The research reports that there are differences among beliefs concerning early literacy instruction and assessment of preservice teachers before the reading methods course. Conclusions: Preservice teachers are moderately familiar with knowledge bases concerning early literacy instruction and assessment before the reading methods courses. Recommendations: Further studies of the impact on foundations courses such as early childhood education and child psychology are warranted, as they seem to inform curriculum methods courses.
