Book excerpt: Protecting Infants through Human Milk: Advancing the Scientific Evidence provides a forum in which basic scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, and policy makers exchange the latest findings regarding the effects of human milk and breastfeeding on infant and maternal health, thereby fostering new and promising collaborations. This volume also integrates data from animal and in vitro laboratory studies with clinical and population studies to examine human milk production and composition, the mechanisms of infant protection and/or risk from human milk feeding, and proposed interventions related to infant feeding practices. Additionally, it stimulates critical evaluation of, and advances in, the scientific evidence base and research methods, and identifies the research priorities in various areas.

Book excerpt: Although infant feeding may be considered the primal form of motherinfant interaction, its treatment as a worthy subject of scientific investigation has only recently ascended to a position of importance. The reasons for our current interest are varied and important. For example, over the past fifty years the methods for studying feeding have improved, whether one speaks of analysing the composition of milk or the synchrony of the dyadic give-and-take during a feeding. Secondly, with breastfeeding rates having risen dramatically recently, the correlates of this societal change are undeniably of increased empirical interest. Finally, the current child obesity epidemic has propelled infant feeding to the forefront of the variety of public health strategies that will be needed to slow this crisis. The contributors to the present volume are all well-established researchers in the area of mother-infant interactions that surround infant feeding. With a mixture of theoretical underpinnings, methodological advances, and samples of current research, this book should serve as a useful reference for scientists and practitioners interested in the behavioral and health issues that surround infant feeding.

Book excerpt: Integrating Population Outcomes, Biological Mechanisms and Research Methods in the Study of Human Milk and Lactation is the product of the 10th Conference of the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation, held on September 15-19, 2000, in Tucson, Arizona. The presented sessions at the meeting are as diverse as the volume itself. These sessions include the impact of micronutrient deficiencies during lactation on maternal and infant health, the premature infant, developmental immunology, breastfeeding in the industrialized world, and viral transmission in milk. Whenever possible, the sessions were organized to include human population research, research showing the biological underpinnings of the effects on human health, and important methodological issues. This volume is a contemporary and influential tool for human milk biologists, breastfeeding epidemiologists, biochemists, immunologists, clinical specialists, and all professionals and researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: WHO and UNICEF jointly developed this global strategy to focus world attention on the impact that feeding practices have on the nutritional status, growth and development, health, and thus the very survival of infants and young children. The strategy is the result of a comprehensive two-year participatory process. It is based on the evidence of nutrition's significance in the early months and years of life, and of the crucial role that appropriate feeding practices play in achieving optimal health outcomes. The strategy is intended as a guide for action; it identifies interventions with a proven positive impact; it emphasizes providing mothers and families the support they need to carry out their crucial roles, and it explicitly defines the obligations and responsibilities in this regards of governments, international organizations, and other concerned parties.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Current international practices in child feeding are explored and areas of needed research are identified. Principles important in formulating guidelines for improved feeding practices also are discussed. Against a backdrop of severe malnutrition problems in developing countries, advisory group members suggest crucial factors to be considered in planning programs. A socioeconomic analysis is presented regarding limitations or constraints to breast feeding and artificial feeding among well-to-do and rural populations internationally. Specific suggestions for research are presented for biomedical problems, socioeconomic and cultural problems and research methodology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Infant Feeding: Boston Methods, And, Chicago Methods As these lectures represent a somewhat new method of post graduate medical education in this country, the history leading to their development may be of interest. The plan originated with Dr. W. S. Rankin, Secretary of the Board of Health of the State of North Carolina. He conceived the idea of bringing the medical school, in the person of a traveling lecturer, to the doors of the physician, enabling the latter in this way to con tinde with his practice instead of being compelled to leave it for several months while he sought postgraduate education in one of the large medical centers. Upon hearing of this scheme, President E. K. Graham, of the University of North Carolina, gave it his enthusiastic support, and courses were arranged under the joint auspices of the University and the State Board of Health. Two sections of six classes each were organized, one in the eastern part of the State, one in the western. Each of us had six towns in his circuit, and traveled each day to a new town, returning to the first one at the beginning of each week. One of us was trained in the methods used in Boston, the other in Chicago, with postgraduate work in Europe. As a result of this dissimilarity in our training the lectures differ a good deal, and it occurred to us that it might be of value to combine the two sets in one volume, so that the teachings of two somewhat different schools of infant feeding may be compared. Each of us has prepared and presented his course of lectures independently of the other and without knowledge of the other's methods and plans. It is with a spirit of cooperation rather than rivalry, of construction than destruction, that we offer them to the profession.
