Book Synopsis Thailand by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Thailand written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand's economic and social transformation of the last 50 years has placed it in the ranks of upper middle-income countries and made it an integral part of global value chains. It has also established itself as a regional hub for key transport and logistics, with a world-class airport. To continue its rise, Thailand needs to move into the higher-value segments of economic activity and create high-quality jobs that are regionally broader based. This report identifies the major constraints to accomplishing these goals and analyzes the main challenges. Among them, the country must: enhance research and development and international technology transfers; elevate worker skills and their industrial relevance; address structural impediments to competition, notably in services; provide advanced transport and logistics infrastructure; and improve access to finance and technology for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Book Synopsis Thailand at the Margins by : Jim Glassman
Download or read book Thailand at the Margins written by Jim Glassman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Glassman addresses the role of the state in the industrial transformation of what was, before the economic crisis of 1997-98, one of Southeast Asia's fastest growing economies. Approaching this issue from a different angle to those dominating 1980s and 1990s debates about the role of states in East Asian growth, Glassman argues that the Thai state has been both proactive and interventionist in encouraging industrial transformation - contrary to what neo-liberals have asserted - but at the same time has not been a 'developmental' state of the sort championed by neo-Weberian analysts of East Asia. Analyzing the Cold War period, the period of the economic boom, as well as the economic crisis and its political aftershock, Thailand at the Margins recasts the story of the Thai state's post-World War II development performance by focusing on uneven industrialization and the interaction between internationalization and the transformation of Thai labour.

Book Synopsis Industrialization with a Weak State by : Sombūn Siriprachai
Download or read book Industrialization with a Weak State written by Sombūn Siriprachai and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of collected essays by Somboon Siriprachai offers a critical assessment of Thai industrialization with a focus on industrial policy, rent seeking and income inequality. An economist by training, Somboon saw the Thai state as authoritarian rather than developmental, and criticized the adoption policies that were oriented toward increasing government revenue instead of nurturing industrial development. While these policies achieved growth, they did not strengthen Thailand's technological capability and industrial skills, or promote research and development. Somboon disputed the World Bank’s classification of Thailand as a Newly Industrializing Economy (NIE), backing his argument with empirical evidence and comparisons with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The success of these East Asian countries, he suggested, rested on the competence of the state to direct the accumulation process rather than reliance on any particular strategy for industrialization. Arguing that growth of industrial productivity is the key to a country’s living standard and its ability to compete in the world market, he argued that government intervention was essential to successful late-comer industrialization. Combining institutional economics with a historical perspective, Somboon’s work provides a unique analysis of the transition of the Thai economy from around the mid nineteenth century until 2000. His essays are a unique and valuable contribution not only to Thai studies but also to the study of economic development of late-comer countries and the role of the state in that process.

Download or read book Multinational Enterprises and Industrial Transformation written by Archanun Kohpaiboon and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MNEs have been involved in Thai manufacturing since the early 1960s but despite this significant involvement, their role in the industrialization process is a controversial issue. This book aims to evaluate the impact of MNE involvement in Thai manufacturing; and to recommend policies for maximising the benefits from MNE involvement. MNEs have been involved in Thai manufacturing since the early 1960s but despite this significant involvement, their role in the industrialization process remains a controversial issue. This book has three main foci: to evaluate the impact of MNE involvement in Thai manufacturing; to gain insight into the principal mechanisms by which MNEs contribute to the industrialization process and obstacles that prevent them from functioning more effectively; and to recommend policies for maximising the benefits from MNE involvement. The key hypothesis proposed by the author is that gains from MNE involvement are conditioned by the policy environment of the host country. The scope of MNE involvement studies uniquely covers not only FDI but also non-FDI. The study also draws together valuable conclusions and outlines policy lessons for other developing countries. "Multinational Enterprises and Industrial Transformation" will appeal to post-graduate and advanced undergraduate students in subject areas of international economics, industrial organization, economic growth, development economics and Asian economic development.

Download or read book Southeast Asia's Misunderstood Miracle written by Jomo K.S. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The debate on the major factors contributing to Southeast Asian industrialization continues unabated. As might be expected, there is much at stake in this debate. The debate is largely ideological in nature and partly centers on the role and contribution of state interventions and other institutions in market processes in the context of late industrialization. At the risk of caricaturing the debate, on the one hand, one finds the dominant and more influential position held by those who blame the state for all that has gone wrong and credit the market for all that has turned out right; on the other hand, the minority statist extreme position basically credits most major economic achievements in East Asia to appropriate interventions by developmentalist states. While very few people would actually fully identify with either of these caricatured extremes, much of the discussion actually gravitates around either of these poles. "
