It rejects a conventional orthodoxy that assigns a limited role to America and challenges narratives which neglect the natural asymmetries and focus on discord and differences to define India-America relations. Integrating the security, political and economic elements of the Indo-American relationship it presents a synthesis of India’s encounter with the post-war hegemon and looks at the military, economic and political involvement of America during the ‘transfer of power’ from Britain to India. Bhardwaj delves into the role of American non-government agencies and examines the anti-communist ideological linkages that the Indian political class developed with America, the influence of this bonding and the role of American ideas, experts, funds, international relations and strategy in shaping India’s social, economic and educational institutions. Analyzing India’s non-alignment policy and its linkages to American policy on the non-communist neutrals, it argues that India’s movement towards the Soviet Union and away from China in the mid 1950s was in tune with the American strategy to cause the Sino-Soviet split. The book presents a fresh perspective based on authentic records and adds a new dimension to the understanding of modern Indian history and Indo-American relations. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth study to examine the history, treatment and conditions of more than 2500 Japanese prisoners of war who were captured by British forces on the Burma front and kept in India during the period 1942-46. Drawing on original sources, including the National Archive of India, the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as limited government records in the UK, USA and Japan, together with some former Japanese POWs’ first-hand accounts, the author has been able to provide a detailed picture of the way of life of these prisoners, the organization of camp life, as well as the policies that governed their incarceration. In so doing, the author fills a significant gap both in Pacific War studies and prisoner-of-war history. The manner of the capture and surrender of the Japanese was unique, in that they were captured, for the most part, when they were either seriously wounded or sick, or had become unconscious due to hunger or disease while fighting on the Arakan, Imphal and Kohima (Burma) fronts. A few in good health gave themselves up; but there was no mass surrender, even by a single regiment or unit, ever took place, thus giving rise to the myth that no Japanese soldier ever became a prisoner of war. This account sets the history straight and will be widely welcomed by the generalist and specialist alike, particularly those studying the history of this period, including POW history, as well as students of international law and the work of international agencies, such as the Red Cross.

Book excerpt: Gandhi's Quit India Movement of 1942 was the climax of a nationalist revolutionary movement which sought independence on India's own terms. Indian independence was attained through revolution, not through a benevolent grant from the British imperial regime. "The British left India because Indians had made it impossible for them to stay." The bases for Francis Hutchins' thesis are new facts from hitherto unused sources: interviews with surviving participants in the movement, private papers from the Gandhi Memorial Museum and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, documents in the National Archives of India. In particular, he has studied the secret records of the British government, recently made available, which reveal for the first time the extent of the revolutionary movement and Britain's plans for dealing with it. Of the British records Hutchins says, "No other regime has left such careful documentation of its strategies or compiled such extensive records revealing the way in which it was overthrown." Even though England had always proclaimed its hope that India would one day become independent, the tacit assumption was that this was a remote eventuality. Only after Gandhi's Quit India Movement did Britain's political parties resign themselves to the necessity to leave quickly, whether or not they believed India was "ready." Obscured by censorship in India and by preoccupation with World War II, the significance of Gandhi's revolutionary technique was not appreciated at the time. Hutchins' impressive analysis uses the Indian case to develop a general theory of the revolutionary nature of colonial nationalism.

Unique to the project are the identifications in the captions, which were researched over many years with the help of tribal members and genealogists, and include both English and Ho-Chunk names.
