Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Radiant Infrastructures Rahul Mukherjee explores how the media coverage of nuclear power plants and cellular phone antennas in India—what he calls radiant infrastructures—creates environmental publics: groups of activists, scientists, and policy makers who use media to influence public opinion. In documentaries, lifestyle television shows, newspapers, and Bollywood films, and through other forms of media (including radiation-sensing technologies), these publics articulate contesting views about the relationships between modernity, wireless signals, and nuclear power. From testimonies of cancer patients who live close to cell towers to power plant operators working to contain information about radiation leaks and health risks, discussions in the media show how radiant infrastructures are at once harbingers of optimism about India's development and emitters of potentially carcinogenic radiation. In tracing these dynamics, Mukherjee expands understandings of the relationship between media and infrastructure and how people make sense of their everyday encounters with technology and the environment.

Book excerpt: "The Holistic Pine is India's first independent international monthly lifestyle journal " Sanskar News Authenticity, Brevity, and Clarity We experience information overload, the moment we search something online, especially when this search is regarding courses and careers. What guarantee do we have that the information we receive online is genuine or not? How many hours should we dedicate to sift through the data available? How could we identify the authenticity of information? Instead of spending hours and hours of time and energy, The Holistic Pine is making it easier for the reader to get authentic information within a short period of time. This is one of the reasons educational institutions are moving massively towards The Holistic Pine, where you get Authenticity, Brevity, and Clarity. There is still another reason. Most academic journals subscribed by college/school libraries do not create readers out of students. Most students avoid them. However, The Holistic Pine is unique in its appeal. That's where The Holistic Pine becomes different. It has created a bridge between the magazine culture and journal culture, offering in each issue a highly stylized reading material that attracts students and scholars. The Holistic Pine, thus, becomes an academic asset in educational institutions, scholars, UPSC, PSC, and Civil Service or IAS aspirants, and general readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 7.3 billion people currently live on the planet. Of these, 3.4 billion live in rural areas. In just a few regions—Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa—less than 50 per cent of poverty is now located in rural areas. But for the rest of the world's regions between 55 per cent and 80 per cent of the poor continue to live in the countryside. Progress is being made, but much of the knowhow needed is not disseminated outside of a small coterie of professionals who work in the area. With urban development attracting a great deal of attention lately, poorer rural areas deserve the same and new knowledge for empowerment of rural communities is urgently needed. This book provides an overview of current thinking and practices that have emerged over the last thirty years for uplifting rural communities in developing economies. Drawing on a body of knowledge across a spectrum of relevant disciplines, this book provides a range of innovative ideas for rural planning, housing and infrastructure development. Governments in many emerging economies, where rural poverty is often most acute, have attempted to improve livelihoods. Approaches and techniques that have been used for urban development are often not applicable to rural communities. Studies show that money allocated for rural development is often not effectively spent due to distance, lack of infrastructure, lack of education, poverty and other factors. Meanwhile, the gap in development between the city and country continues to grow, sometimes leading to social and political instability, in both developing and developed countries. This book seeks to provide a guidebook for meeting such challenges. Through in-depth enquiry of global practices and thinking about rural development, and selected case studies, the authors argue that careful consideration must be given to incorporating issues of resilience, resourcefulness and the involvement of communities at grassroots levels in realising the transformation of rural settlements into Smart Villages.
