Book excerpt: This research evaluates the utility of new Army tests of spatial, perceptual, and psychomotor abilities developed under the Army's Project A (improving the Selection, Classification, and Utilization of Army Enlisted Personnel). Utility is judged in terms of incremental validity over the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The analyses are stepwise regressions using predictors and performance tests form the 1985 Concurrent Validation of Project A.A variety of performance measures, ranging from comprehensive to task-level, served as criteria for the analyses. In the analyses, optimal combinations of Project A predictors substantially augmented the proportion of criterion variance explained by optimal combinations of ASVAB scores alone, particularly for such comprehensive measures as General Soldiering Proficiency and the combined score on written tests of school and job knowledge. In certain Military Occupational Specialties (MOS), Project A scores led to increments in the predictability of more specific criteria, such as Target Identification and Navigation. While no strong support was found for the relative superiority of spatial versus perceptual-psychomotor scores, there was evidence that some individual tests (viz., Assembling Objects, Figural Reasoning, and Target Identification) were more useful than others as incremental predictors of the criteria. Because of the concurrent design used and the lack of opportunities for cross-validation, these generally favorable findings only the suggest the results to be expected from the Longitudinal Validation of Project A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this project was to develop an agenda for Special Forces (SF) selection and classification research. Job analysis data, interviews, field observation, and expert judgments about the quality of measures formed the foundation for the Roadmap. The resulting Roadmap is composed of eight projects. Projects 1 and 2, Concurrent Criterion-Related Validation of Readily Available Predictor Measures Against on the Job Performance and Development and Implementation of Content Valid Job Sample Tests, supplement SF selection and classification with measures of leadership, temperament, and communication and analytic skills that could be implemented quickly. Project 3, Validation of Measures of Conventional Army Task Proficiency, Experience and Preference Against Training Performance, addresses the fit between individuals and SF Jobs. Project 4, Validation of Training Performance Against on the Job Performance, would evaluate the usefulness of training data for predicting job performance. Project 5, Predictive Validation of All Predictors Against on the Job Performance, the ultimate test of any selection system, requires maintaining databases for validation purposes. Projects 6-8 involve the development of information to facilitate decision making at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. The are: Development of a Selection and Training Decision Simulator (Project 6), Review of New Measures of Leader Problem Solving Performance (Project 7), and Training Performance Study (Project 8)."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a joint-service battery used by the U.S. military services and the Coast Guard for enlistment selection and occupational classification. A subset of the ASVAB consisting of a composite of math and verbal tests is used for selection while various combinations of ASVAB tests, in composites formed to optimally predict training performance, are used for occupational qualification. The Navy has conducted extensive research to support the benefits of including a former ASVAB perceptual speed/accuracy test, Coding Speed (CS), as an adjunct ASVAB classification test as well as a working memory test, Mental Counters (MCt), shortly to be administered to both Navy and Air Force applicants. This technical report summarizes the supporting evidence for using CS and MCt in military classification and for use of the current ASVAB spatial ability test, Assembling Objects (AO), which is now only used by the Navy. The supporting evidence includes (1) incremental validity to the ASVAB in predicting training performance for a range of occupations, (2) lower adverse impact for females and some minority groups in qualifying for important occupations, and (3) increases in the proportion of recruit populations qualified for occupations in the aggregate.

Book excerpt: The Navy Personnel Research and Development Center (NPRDC) has developed new aptitude tests for possible addition to the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Validity studies are currently underway to determine whether the new tests produce an increment in validity using either a training or a job performance criterion. Because most samples are small, it is necessary to pool information across sites to obtain a sufficiently powerful test for incremental validity. Methods for obtaining the sampling distributions of incremental validities (the differences between multiple correlations) from the same and from independent samples were developed and are presented. These results were applied to yield methods for pooling incremental validities, testing the statistical significance of pooled validities, constructing confidence intervals for the pooled incremental validity, and conducting a power analysis of the pooled test for incremental validity. It was concluded that the test for the statistical significance of the pooled estimate should have adequate power to detect increments in validity of .02 given pooled sample sizes of N greater than or equal to 4,000.

Book excerpt: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) used to select and classify enlisted personnel, is highly correlated to math and verbal content areas. New computerized predictor tests that are sensitive to traits not measured by current ASVAB subtests may be able to improve predictive validity. This research memorandum investigates the potential of one such group of tests, the Enhanced Computer-Administered tests, to predict performance in the mechanical maintenance specialties.
