Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Cahan (1860-1951) was a Russian-American novelist and labor leader. His family, which was devoutly Orthodox, moved in 1866 to Wilna; there young Cahan received the usual Jewish preparatory education for the rabbinate. He, however, was attracted by secular knowledge and clandestinely studied the Russian language, ultimately prevailing on his parents to allow him to enter the Teachers Institute of Wilna, from which he was graduated in 1881. He was appointed teacher in a Jewish government school in Velizh, Vitebsk, in the same year; but a domiciliary visit by the police, resulting from his connection with the revolutionary movement, caused him to flee the country. In 1882 he emigrated to the United States to escape the mass roundups of revolutionaries following the assassination of Russia's Tsar Alexander II. He was the founder-editor of the Yiddish newspaper, Forverts. A Providential Match was the first of Cahan's tales to be published, in 1895. His first novel was Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto (1896). His next work of fiction was, The Imported Bridegroom and Other Stories (1898). Another important work, The Rise of David Levinsky was published in 1917.

Book excerpt: Only nineteen and a poor orphan, the fame of the prospective bridegroom, as a marvel of acumen and memory, reached far and wide. Few of the subtlest rabbinical minds in the district were accounted his match in debate, and he was said to have some two thousand Talmudical folios literally at his finger's ends. This means that if you had placed the tip of your finger on some word of a volume, he could have told you the word which came under your pressure on any other page you might name.

Book excerpt: Yekl and the Imported Bridegroom and Other Stories of Yiddish New York brings together several stories by one of the preeminent American Jewish writers, Abraham Cahan. Cahan was an emigrant from Lithuania in 1882, having moved to New York City to escape political persecution under the Russian czar. In New York, Cahan established himself as editor of a prominent Jewish daily paper (it eventually became the leading Yiddish newspaper in the world), as well as a successful writer of fiction. This volume brings together some of his powerful and evocative fiction of the lives of Jews in New York around the turn of the 19th century, giving a faithful and fascinating view of the joys and challenges they faced as they dealt with the problems of assimilation into a new culture while trying to maintain their uniqueness. The lead story, "Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto," was made into a successful movie in 1975, Hester Street. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, thousands of immigrants labored in New Yorks Lower East Side sweatshops, enduring work environments that came to be seen as among the worst examples of Progressive-Era American industrialization. Although reformers agreed that these unsafe workplaces must be abolished, their reasons have seldom been fully examined. Sweated Work, Weak Bodies is the first book on the origins of sweatshops, exploring how they came to represent the dangers of industrialization and the perils of immigration. It is an innovative study of the language used to define the sweatshop, how these definitions shaped the first anti-sweatshop campaign, and how they continue to influence our current understanding of the sweatshop.

Book excerpt: Mary Esteve provides a study of crowd representations in American literature from the antebellum era to the early twentieth century. As a central icon of political and cultural democracy, the crowd occupies a prominent place in the American literary and cultural landscape. Esteve examines a range of writing by Poe, Hawthorne, Lydia Maria Child, Du Bois, James, and Stephen Crane among others. These writers, she argues, distinguish between the aesthetics of immersion in a crowd and the mode of collectivity demanded of political-liberal subjects. In their representations of everyday crowds, ranging from streams of urban pedestrians to swarms of train travellers, from upper-class parties to lower-class revivalist meetings, such authors seize on the political problems facing a mass liberal democracy - problems such as the stipulations of citizenship, nation formation, mass immigration and the emergence of mass media. Esteve examines both the aesthetic and political meanings of such urban crowd scenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selective relish with which most American Jews affirm their identity -- consuming kosher delicacies once a year, extravagantly celebrating the bar mitzvahs of their sons and the weddings of their daughters -- has usually given rise to satire or consternation. The Wonders of America offers an alternative perspective, for this pioneering social history of Jewish culture highlights the cultural ingenuity and adaptive genius of American Jewish life. Drawing on advertisements, etiquette manuals, sermons, and surveys, Jenna Weissman Joselit constructs a lively and humorous account of how three generations of American Jews created their distinctive American culture. This provocative, enlightening study describes the forging of a rich and exuberant modern Jewish identity and makes it clear that it is not the theoretical debates of rabbis and scholars but the small choices of daily life that shape and sustain a culture
