Acquiring knowledge in lexis is a vital component in the process of learning a second or a foreign language. Lexis and grammar form the fundamental basis of the four language skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing. Those four give a person the ability to master a different language apart from one ́s mother tongue, for instance, the English language. Nowadays, English, as the lingua franca, is basically taught to students on a global level. For this reason, it is crucial for students to develop a certain set of skills, oftentimes already at a young age, that helps them come to terms with contemporary expectations raised by the society and the global market. In connection to these established expectations in society, teachers from around the world try their best to teach their ESL/ EFL (English as second or foreign language) students the necessary basics of the English language, which gives them the ability to communicate with people form different countries or to even act in the international world of business later in life. Depending on the country and its curricula, from kindergartners and first up to forth grade students are already introduced to the English language. Teaching young children therefore requires special methods, which need to fit the age of the pupils.

Book excerpt: Results provided strong support for the Parallel Model, suggesting that in general, ESL students acquire grammatical skills in much the same way as EL1 children. Support for the Interactive Model was weak, as differences were found only when the acquisition of individual grammatical features was examined. Still, a convergent perspective is required to explain the acquisition of grammar in ESL children. This model adopts the Parallel Model of L2 acquisition in general, but also acknowledges that language-specific L1 influence may occur in the acquisition of individual linguistic features. The present research asked whether acquisition of grammatical skills in English-as-a second-language (ESL) students best fits one of the two models of second language (L2) acquisition: The Parallel Model and The Interactive Model. The role of grammatical skills, as well as vocabulary knowledge, and phonological processing skills in reading comprehension were also examined. Results regarding reading comprehension indicated that grammatical sensitivity was a relatively strong predictor for EL1 readers but not for ESL students. Phonological awareness was the most significant predictor for reading comprehension in ESL students, whereas vocabulary knowledge was most significant in predicting reading comprehension of EL1 students. For ESL students, grammatical skills and vocabulary knowledge may be subsumed under a broad construct of language proficiency. Hence, impact from grammatical skills upon reading comprehension in ESL readers, may be indirect. Vocabulary knowledge was consistently found to be a significant predictor for grammatical skills in both ESL and EL1 groups in grades 1, 2 and 3. Both phonological awareness and phonological memory were strong predictors for EL1 children. Phonological awareness played a more important role for the Cantonese-speaking ESL students but not for the Punjabi speaking ESL children. Implications for teaching ESL reading suggest the importance of phonological processing skills as well as general proficiency in language, including vocabulary knowledge and grammatical skills. Early identification and intervention of ESL students at-risk for reading difficulty may be possible by examining children's phonological processing skills and vocabulary knowledge in early primary grades.

By contrast, fewer studies have documented the role of these components in the reading comprehension of English language learners in the field of second language (L2) research. The proposed study thus examines the role of vocabulary knowledge. syntactic awareness, and inference skills in L2 reading comprehension in young learners. who have age-appropriate word decoding ability and the required phonological processing ability. Two of the primary aims of the study were to establish vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness and inference generation ability as distinguishable psychological constructs, and to examine the strength of the relations between the constructs and with respect to reading comprehension. The third aim was to find out whether vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness and inference generation ability explain differences between less skilled and skilled L2 readers, and whether the correlations between the constructs and reading comprehension were different for less skilled and skilled L2 readers. Throughout the book, consciously used the terms -skilled- and -less skilled-comprehenders, since the term 'poor comprehenders' is used in a very specialized way to refer 10 learners, vho haye an underlying deficit. In our study. no clinical assessments were done and therefore there was no way to establish that poor comprehension was due to an underlying deficit or due to external factors like teaching methodology, reading exposure. or socio-economic background. To be on the safer side, learners who had low reading comprehension (less than 0.4 standard deviation below age-appropriate and comprehension mean) were referred to as 'less skilled comprehenders.' The term also distinguished them from 'poor readers- a label often used in the reading research literature to refer to learners who have weak decoding skills.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of an intervention using word explanation and repeated reading supported by audio taped books, to increase knowledge of targeted vocabulary words. Participants in the study attended an inner city school in a metropolitan Canadian city. A total of 24 grade one and two ESL students with early reading delays participated. Pre-test measures included the PPVT-III (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Third Edition, Dunn & Dunn, 1997) and Memory for Digits subtest (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Wagner, Torgesen & Rashotte, 1999). A 58-item Target Vocabulary "Pest of words selected for study in the intervention was given pre and post-test to all participants. Twelve students were assigned to the intervention of shared reading, word explanation and home practice using audiotaped books. Twelve students in the control condition received their regular language arts program. Repeated measures ANOVA of pre and post-test target vocabulary scores found an overall significant pre-test-post-test effect between intervention and control groups. An interaction between pre-test-post-test and treatment groups was also found, with the intervention group showing a larger post-test score. Variables of grade, book level and parts of speech were examined using repeated measures ANOVA with no significant effects found on target vocabulary gain scores. Pearson correlation between word gains on the Target Vocabulary Test and short term memory scores on the Digit Span subtest (CTOPP) found a positive and near significant correlation for the intervention group. Four case studies of students in the intervention group illustrated a relationship between higher short-term memory scores and larger target vocabulary gains. Results suggest that word explanation and repeated reading combined are effective for increasing vocabulary among grade one and two ESL students.
