There is a paucity of research on this topic for the Division III student-athlete population as well as for research which evaluates positive psychological outcomes in collegiate student-athletes. This study aimed to fill the gap in the current literature on both counts. Quantitave methodology was used to assess 108 collegiate student-athletes from an NCAA mid- Atlantic Division III sport conference. The Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Vocational Identity Measure, and the Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving were used were used to evaluate the relationship of athletic identity, vocational, identity and thriving in this population. Data was analyzed using a stepwise regression model which yielded a moderate, significant, and positive relationship between vocational identity and thriving; removing athletic identity from the model all together. Past research also indicated that gender may play a role in student-athlete career maturity such that females tend to have more career maturity than males (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996); and have lower scores of depression and anxiety (Armstrong & Oomen-Early, 2009). Unlike past research, the current study found no significant gender differences across all variables. A reflection on these findings, implications, future research, and study limitations are discussed. " -- Abstract

Book excerpt: Research on the graduation rates of specific demographic groups indicates that African American male student-athletes are not graduating at the same rate as their peers (Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports, 2009). In addressing the issue of graduation rates, scholars cite that attendance at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) is influential to the academic achievement of African American male student-athletes because they are subject to racial discrimination on college campuses (Hyatt, 2003) and racial discrimination has negative effects on academic achievement (Thomas, Caldwell, Faison, & Jackson, 2009). Given that research has linked academic self-concept and academic achievement for African American male college students (Spurgeon & Meyers, 2003) but a racially discriminatory college environment is damaging to academic achievement and identity variables influence perceptions of discrimination (Sellers & Shelton, 2003), the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between identity variables (i.e. racial and athletic identity), environmental factors (i.e. racial discrimination) and academic outcomes (i.e. academic self-concept and GPAs). To this end, online survey research was used to gather data from African American male student-athletes in order to examine the above relationships. Participants were 168 African American male student-athletes at Division 1 predominately White institutions (PWIs). Data analyses consisted of 1-sample t-tests and moderated hierarchical regression analyses, with analyses being conducted in two parts. Part I found that African American male student-athletes report experiencing racial discrimination in an academic setting. Moreover, Part I found that the racial identity variables of centrality and the public regard racial were significant predictors of athletic and academic racial discrimination. Athletic identity variables were not significant predictors of racial discrimination. Part II found that racial discrimination was a significant predictor of academic achievement as measured by GPA. Athletic discrimination and differential academic treatment positively influenced academic achievement but academic differential effect negatively influenced academic achievement. Finally, the racial identity variable of private regard moderated the relationship between academic racial discrimination and GPA. The results of the study are discussed and contextualized with the larger body of literature examining the academic achievement of African American male student-athletes.

Black male student-athletes are an overrepresented group among the student-athlete population, representing more than a quarter of all student-athletes. Previous research has explored the impact of athletic identity on student-athletes, as well as the academic success of Black male student-athletes. Due to the high number of Black males participating in intercollegiate athletics and the lack of research related to their mental health experiences, the goal of this study was to examine the impact of athletic identity on the experiences of Black male student-athletes and the mental health implications that came as a result of those experiences. Six Black male former student-athletes were interviewed and revealed major themes and experiences related to athletic identity, on-campus experiences, and mental health. The interviews provided information that could prove useful in developing techniques and programs that could assist this population during and after their college careers.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between athletic identity foreclosure and career development (i.e., career maturity and career exploration) through the use of a sport-specific measure of athletic identity foreclosure. Student-athletes (N = 280) from colleges and universities in the United States provided demographic information and completed the Career Maturity Inventory - Form C, the Career Exploration Survey – Revised, and the Sport-Specific Measure of Identity Foreclosure. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that athletic identity foreclosure was inversely related both to career maturity and career exploration, suggesting that student-athletes who strongly and exclusively commit to their role as athletes fail to explore other non-sport-related career options. Additionally, student-athletes with high levels of athletic identity foreclosure may be less willing and capable of efficiently engaging in vocational tasks than studentathletes who are not in foreclosed in their athletic identity. Limitations of the study, areas for future research, and applied implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Collegiate athletes have spent their athletic career growing their athletic identity and are given significant support throughout their time in college, and so, the transition into retirement can be difficult and often cause a sense of loss with the end of their athletic career. This transition from college into sports retirement can be affected by a variety of different factors and influences on the individual and their experiences. This mixed methods, phenomenological study looked at the impact of athletic identity on both male and female athletes as they transitioned into retirement, focusing on Division I baseball and softball athletes. These participants were asked to answer the AIMS-Plus questionnaire and participate in an open-ended interview looking retrospectively at their collegiate career and transition into retirement. The results of the AIMS-Plus questionnaires revealed five athletes with high athletic identity (scores 1467-2200), three females and two males, and five athletes with moderate athletic identity (scores 1466-733), three males and two females. The data analysis of the interviews found the common positive factors influencing an athletes transition were outside interests, support from family and teammates, and continued relationship with their sport. The negative factors were involuntary retirement, the time commitment of their college program, and the lack of support from their programs after retirement. Injury was found to be both a positive and negative factor in transitioning depending on the individuals' relationship with the injury. Participants with a higher athletic identity, scored through the AIMS-Plus questionnaire, used language of depression and reported a sense of loss. Some participants reported their athletic identity helping them transition into their next career, focusing on the skills they had learned through athletics. In the reflections of these participants it was found that they wished there was a program in place to aid them into retirement with emphasis on career planning, support groups, and nutrition and exercise education. In summary, the experiences of collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement is influenced by a variety of factors and highly individual. The clinical significance of this research should provide future research into implementing support programs for collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement.

They are tasked with the high demands and time constraints of being both a college level student and athlete. While there have been growing conversations about student athletes at Division I institutions, those pertaining to Division II student athletes remain minimal. While student athletes have a great deal in common, they all come from different backgrounds that have contributed to who they are today. When arriving to college, these unique individuals are introduced to institutional power structures that constrain and control their identities and individuality. These larger power structures have sculpted definitions of what it means to be a "good" student athlete. Meanwhile, society also has defined what a student athlete is. These preconceived notions become even more complicated when using an intersectional approach that takes into consideration the additional identities student athletes hold such as race, class, gender and more. As a result, student athletes are left with the task of living up to the "good" student athlete expectation while also managing a stigmatized student athlete identity. In this study, I used nonprobability and snowball sampling methods to conduct 14 interviews that revealed the ways in which student athletes managed these complex identities. Participants thoroughly talked about the student athlete subculture, hyper surveillance technologies, pressures to sacrifice pieces of their identity and managing a stigmatized identity. Student athletes strive to satisfy the demands of the higher power structures while their personal needs are disregarded.

Book excerpt: Athletes have been found to have more negative attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help than non-athletes despite experiencing comparable amounts of mental illness. The purpose of the present study was to examine factors that are associated with athletes help-seeking attitudes, including athletic identity and emotional competence. A sample of 144 college student athletes from a small, private Midwestern college in the United States participated in the study. The athletes competed at the NCAA Division III level. Participants were asked to complete the following measures: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short Form, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale, the Problem Orientation Scale of the Social Problem Solving Inventory for Adolescents, and the Rumination subscale of the Inhibition Rumination Scale. Correlational analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used to examine the extent to which athletic identity and emotional competence, as measured by alexithymia, problem orientation, and rumination, predicted attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Results revealed that both athletic identity and the emotional competence variables entered as a block predicted unique variance in the athletes attitudes toward seeking help. Among emotional competence variables, alexithymia had a significant negative bivariate relationship with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help and emerged as worthy of further study. Problem orientation was identified as a significant predictor in the regression models, however, functioned as a suppressor variable and did not have a significant bivariate correlation with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Findings, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.
