Germany, indeed most of Europe, was in the grips of a spirit of militant nationalistic fervour, and the inactivity of the great Imperial Navy caused deep frustration, particularly among the naval officers. Not only were they unable to see themselves as heroes, they were also ridiculed on the home front and felt profoundly humiliated. With the exception of the one sea battle at Jutland, their ships saw little or no action at sea and morale slowly collapsed to a point where, at the end of the war, the crews were in a state of mutiny. The seemingly ludicrous order that forced the fleet to go to sea against the British in 1918 was driven by a sense of humiliation, but coming at the war's end it triggered a revolution because the German sailors wanted no part in such madness. The internment at Scapa Flow was the ultimate shaming. This is a fascinating and perceptive analysis of a whole era, and it contributes substantially to our understanding of the war and its consequences consequences, sadly, that helped pave the way for the Third Reich.

Inevitably some were quickly sunk, or eventually beached or scuttled, and others were forced into neutral ports where they were interned for the duration of hostilities. Some, such as the SMS Wolf, were, however, phenomenally successful, and returned to their home ports to popular acclaim as romantic latter day buccaneers. This Leonaur book is based upon writings collated by the British Admiralty after the war, which was, in turn, gathered from German sources within the history of the activities of the Imperial German Navy. The book describes each vessel and details its voyages and battles, together with interesting operational and logistic information. Included in this Leonaur edition, to enhance the text for modern readers, are many pictures not included in any of the original texts. Book excerpt: The unsuccessful pursuit of two German Imperial navy warships The Goeben-Breslau Incident was a naval action which took place in 1914 in the Mediterranean at the outbreak of the First World War. Ships of the Royal Navy Mediterranean fleet attempted to intercept the German battle cruiser SMS Goeben and the light cruiser SMS Breslau. The pursuit raced eastwards across the 'middle sea' until the German warships passed the Dardanelles to safely reach Constantinople (Istanbul) in Ottoman Turkey, at which point they were handed over to the Turkish Government and renamed Yuvaz Sultan Selim and Midili. The ships subsequently engaged Russian military positions bringing Turkey into the war as a German ally. The Goeben-Breslau affair was believed to have far reaching consequences for the allied cause and the failure of the allied naval commanders engaged effectively ended their careers. This Leonaur edition gathers together information on this little-known naval action from several sources and the text is supported by maps and photographs which were not included in the original publications.
