Book excerpt: Despite the existing research regarding effective word-study interventions for struggling adolescent readers, various researchers propose a need for additional research on effective reading interventions to confirm and extend existing knowledge. The current study specifically investigates the impact of the overt/covert and outside-in word-study instructional intervention strategies on struggling adolescent readers’ fluency and comprehension measures. Paired samples t-tests revealed a significant difference in the pretest and posttest fluency scores of participants receiving either overt/covert or outside-in word-study strategy instruction. However, no significant difference occurred between participants’ pretest and posttest comprehension scores. Additionally, ANCOVA statistical analyses revealed no significant differences between the fluency and comprehension scores of participants receiving either overt/covert or outside-in word-study instructional interventions. Because participants’ fluency increased significantly after receiving nine weeks of either overt/covert or outside-in word-study instructional interventions, this study concludes that word-study strategy instruction has the potential to help build the fluency bridge that connects decoding and comprehension. With possibly more time and intervention, participants’ comprehension could also improve.

Although some disorders are fairly easily recognizable (e.g., mental retardation) or very specific to single components of performance and quite rare (e.g., developmental dyscalculia), schools must consider much larger populations of children with learning difficulties who cannot always be readily classified. These children present high-level learning difficulties that affect their performance on a variety of school tasks, but the underlying problem is often their difficulty in understanding written text. In many instances, despite good intellectual abilities and a superficial ability to cope with written texts and to use language appropriately, some children do not seem to grasp the most important elements, or cannot find the pieces of information they are looking for. Sometimes these difficulties are not immediately detected by the teacher in the early school years. They may be hidden because the most obvious early indicators of reading progress in the teacher's eyes do not involve comprehension of written texts or because the first texts a child encounters are quite simple and reflect only the difficulty level of the oral messages (sentences, short stories, etc.) with which the child is already familiar. However, as years go by and texts get more complex, comprehension difficulties will become increasingly apparent and increasingly detrimental to effective school learning. In turn, studying, assimilating new information, and many other situations requiring text comprehension -- from problem solving to reasoning with linguistic contents -- could be affected. Problems with decoding, dyslexia, and language disorders have attracted more interest from researchers than have specific comprehension problems and have occupied more room in specialized journals. Normal reading comprehension has also been a favorite with researchers. However, scarce interest has been paid to subjects who have comprehension difficulties. This book is an attempt to remedy this situation. Book excerpt: English Learners with disabilities (ELSWDs) in both eighth and twelfth grades scored significantly lower on the 2015 NAEP reading assessment than English Learners (ELs) only or students with disabilities (SWDs) only. Despite this, there is limited evidence on how to improve reading outcomes through reading interventions for adolescent ELSWDs. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effects of an intensive, year-long reading intervention, the Reading Intervention for Adolescents (RIA), on reading outcomes (word reading, vocabulary, and comprehension) for ninth grade ELSWDs (n = 95) with deficits in reading comprehension and to determine if the effects of the intervention varied by limited English proficiency (LEP) status (current versus former). Participants assigned to RIA received the intervention for the entire ninth-grade school year, while students in the comparison condition participated in electives such as band, chorus, or computer. Phase I of the intervention focused on advanced word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, while Phase II of the intervention emphasized vocabulary and comprehension, as well as the application of the strategies learned in Phase I with science and social studies texts. Participants were assessed at pre- and post-intervention on measures of real and pseudoword reading, comprehension, and vocabulary. After using analysis of covariance to test for treatment effects and controlling for false discovery rate, there were no significant differences between the RIA treatment and the comparison groups. Small effects were observed on measures of word reading, comprehension, and proximal vocabulary, and Hedge’s g values ranted from 0.08 to 0.40. There were also not significant differential effects of the intervention for students currently identified as LEP versus students formerly identified as LEP. Findings from this study confirm previous research with ELSWDs, in that it is difficult to improve vocabulary and comprehension for this population of students.

Book excerpt: The effect of written word work using word boxes on the decoding fluency of nine first grade students at-risk for reading failure was investigated. A multiple baseline across-participants single subject research design was implemented to measure the effect on students' rate and accuracy of phoneme segmentation fluency, non-word reading fluency, and oral reading fluency, and the accuracy of spelling. Students were screened and assessed using Dynamic Indicators for Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) subtests for phonological segmentation fluency (PSF), nonsense word fluency (NWF), and oral reading fluency (ORF) and a six word spelling test. Additional data were collected on students' reading comprehension, receptive vocabulary, and classroom behaviors at the beginning and end of the study. Research was conducted under three conditions: general education curriculum, small group instruction, and a reading intervention that targeted grapheme-phoneme correspondence using guided sentence writing and word boxes. Students participated in a twenty-five minute small group reading intervention four days a week for 6 to 18 weeks depending on when each group entered the study. The results of this study suggest that written word work using word boxes positively impacted students' decoding skills. The most significant effects were noted in the rate and accuracy of non-word fluency and accuracy of spelling. Lower effect sizes were reported in phoneme segmentation and oral reading fluency measures. Two students reached DIBELS grade level goals in PSF and NWF measures by the end of the study. Instruction in written word work that uses guided sentence writing in combination with word boxes appears to be an effective intervention for students who encounter difficulty mastering the alphabetic principle and struggle with decoding fluency.
