Book excerpt: Given the behavioral expectations of students by teachers and peers in middle school inclusive classrooms and characteristics inherent to students with ASD, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills for inclusion on middle school students with ASD. Specifically, the extent to which the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills would increase the level of demonstration of these skills in the general education inclusion setting was investigated. Because individuals with ASD exhibit limited social communication skills, those skills necessary especially at the middle school level to understand the "hidden curriculum", social skills instruction has been deemed important (APA, 2004; Smith-Myles & Simpson). The current multiple baseline across subjects study was grounded in the research on video modeling (Bellini & Akullian, 2007) and peer mentoring (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Maheady, Harper, & Mallette, 2001) as methods of providing social skills instruction for middle school students with ASD (Goldstein & McGinnis, 1997; Smith-Myles & Simpson, 2001). The impact of the video models and peer mentors was measured using the level of demonstration of five critical social skills on three middle school aged students with ASD. All three students with ASD were included in at least one general education classroom. The results of this investigation indicated that the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of critical social skills positively impacted the levels of demonstration of the skills of students with ASD. While results varied, all three students with ASD increased their levels of demonstration of the targeted critical social skills.

The participants were three middle school-aged students with ASD enrolled in a self-contained classroom. The dependent variable was the percentage of correct social skills components performed when greeting the teacher and initiating a conversation within in the first 10 minutes of class each morning. The independent variable was an intervention package that included video modeling and direct instruction for each social skill component with Skillstreaming procedures (i.e., modeling, role playing, feedback). The results of this research indicated that all three students improved their social skills performance following the implementation of the video modeling intervention package. Furthermore, during the maintenance phase, the social skills performance of each student was maintained. Recommendations for further study and for teachers of students with ASD are presented.

This study compared the frequency of specific social behaviors that contribute to success in a classroom setting. Three situations were observed: 1) a student was exposed to video modeling designed by the researcher paired with Social Stories (TM); 2) a student was exposed to the researcher's video modeling paired with prompts and positive reinforcement, and; 3) a student was exposed to the regular social skills instruction that other student receive in a resource setting. Data were collected using the Prosocial Behaviors Academic Checklist (PBAC). Near or at the end of the study, a survey asking for information about changes in specific behaviors was given to the students' other teachers. The data collected suggested that each intervention conjoined with video modeling is more effective for certain social behaviors, but overall more effective than the regular social skills instruction. Data collected from the surveys did not clearly indicated whether the participants generalized the targeted behaviors.

Currently, there are few studies that examine social skills interventions for college students diagnosed with ASD. A well-established intervention for addressing social skill development is video-self modeling (VSM). Until now, VSM research has focused on primary and secondary students, without investigating this intervention's effects on the social skills of individuals in the postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VSM on social skills for individuals diagnosed with ASD in postsecondary settings. In this study, we examined the effects of VSM on social skills (i.e., social initiations, eye contact, and pausing) using a multiple baseline design across therapists and a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes. Results demonstrated high levels of response to VSM for three participants compared to baseline conditions, and moderate response for the fourth participant.

Social skills research has also shown that teaching social skills to adolescents in group settings may be more effective than presenting them on an individual basis. Adolescents with Aspergers Syndrome (AS) and High functioning Autism (HFA) participated in a12-week Social Skills Training (SST) program. In addition to pre-and post-study measures, conversation skills data were collected before and after the application of the independent variable (video modeling). Follow-up interviews were also conducted with participants, secondary participants, and parents of the primary participants. After a two-week baseline phase, participants attended weekly social skills training and received the treatment of video modeling with videos found on YouTube. This established pre-existing social and conversation skills and enabled the measurement of changes over the course of the 12 week program. After post intervention data were collected, additional data were collected with participants and secondary participants, neuro-typical peers, as a measure of treatment generalization. This study proposed that presenting social skills videos found on YouTube, would be effective in increasing levels of initiation, responses and conversation skills, thereby increasing communication effectiveness and reducing social rejection by peers. Although some gains in conversational skill levels were observed by most participants in the study significant increases in conversation skill levels were not observed in both ASD only group settings or of the ASD neuro-typical mixed group setting.

A multi-condition reversal design was used to assess the effects of the independent variables (direct instruction of social skills, direct instruction of social skills with video-modeling, and video-modeling with self-monitoring of social skills) on the dependent variables (initiation, response, turn-taking, and eye contact). Various formal and informal assessments specific to children with autism were also conducted. The baseline (A) assessment procedures were conducted to assess the types of communication deficits that the participant exhibited that effected with his social interactions. The first treatment phase (B1) involved teaching social skills through a direct instruction curriculum. The second treatment phase (C1) employed the same teaching procedures utilized in phase two (B1) with the addition of video-modeling using a iMac. The third treatment phase combined video modeling and self-monitoring. Self monitoring was cued by a small auditory timer that prompted the student every five minutes. Video-modeling used in addition with direct instruction or self-monitoring was found to increase the frequency of occurrence of the dependent variables eye contact, initiation, response, and turn-taking. Video-modeling used with direct instruction had the greatest effect on the average number of occurrences of initiation (39.8) and turn-taking (14.4). Video-modeling used with self-monitoring had the greatest effect on the average number of occurrences of responses (56) and eye contact (11).

VSM is a teaching method in which an individual views a video clip, watching herself/himself engaging in a task (behavior). This is meant to build familiarity with the task, enhancing the individual's ability to perform it independently. By applying this method to functional life skills, which are necessary for high school students with ASD, it may be possible to help them build the skills necessary to live independently. The current study utilized a non-concurrent multiple baseline across behaviors research design, which was implemented to answer the research questions: (1) What are the effects of VSM on functional life skills for high school students with ASD in a home setting? (2) Once acquired, are functional life skills maintained over a period of time? (3) Does VSM provoke self-efficacy beliefs in high school students with ASD? The study was guided by self-efficacy theory. Self-efficacy refers to a person's self-belief that she/he is capable of completing a task. With this in mind, it is hypothesized that by using VSM as a teaching method, participants will learn functional life skills, maintain these skills over time, and report higher levels of self-efficacy beliefs post-intervention. Visual analyses were utilized to analyze and interpret study results. Visual analyses consisted of analyzing any changes in variability, level, and trend of each phase by implementing a line graph. Reliability was assessed through Inter-observer Agreement (IOA). Procedural integrity was verified for procedures implemented in phases of the study. Results from visual analyses from the study suggest VSM is an effective teaching method for adolescents with ASD in a home setting. Additionally, all participants maintained their acquired functional life skills post one week, and post two weeks following the end of VSM phase. Descriptive statistics was applied to evaluate pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for participants. Specifically, the total, mean total, and median are reported. The study found that VSM is effective for helping high school students with ASD develop and maintain functional life skills. Results revealed no significant changes occurred between pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for all participants. Participants and their mothers reported overall positive perceptions of social validity. Implications for practice and theory are discussed, as well as directions for future research.

Book excerpt: Although there is a push to include students with autism spectrum disorders in the general academic context, students with autism are often not fully included in the social environment of schools. Even when students with autism are in the same settings as their typically developing peers, they often have few social interactions with their peers (e.g., Carter, Hughes, Guth, & Copeland, 2005). One reason for the dearth of social interactions that students with autism have during the school day may be related to deficits in social skills which can interfere with interactions with peers. Peer networks, a type of peer-mediated intervention, have been shown to be effective in increasing the social contacts and relationships of students with disabilities. In peer networks, gains in social interactions are accomplished by providing training to general education peers who compromise a social network for the student with a disability (SWD) outside of the classroom setting. However, the literature on peer networks varies as to if specific social skills training for the SWD is included and often does not fully examine specific or even general social skills deficits of the SWD. This study examined the effectiveness of a peer network plus intervention which incorporated an explicit social skills training component within a peer network framework. Four participants with an educational diagnosis of autism participated in a 10 week peer network intervention. A social skills training component was added to the peer network systematically. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the peer network plus intervention for (a) enhancing targeted social skills of the students with autism, (b) enhancing broader social skills as measured by multiple social skill and adaptive questionnaires, and (c) increasing the number of social contacts, friendships, and interactions students with autism have in high schools. In addition, the social validity of this intervention was measured in order to determine the feasibility and acceptability for use in schools and by school personnel. Finally, the study examined the sensitivity of the Autism Social Skills Profile (ASSP, Bellini & Hopf, 2007) for use as a progress monitoring tool with these interventions. Using a multiple baseline across participants design, this study demonstrated that the social skills component of the peer network plus intervention was effective at improving the targeted social skills of all four participants. Two independent coders found Strong Overall Evidence for improvements in social skills when the social skills component was added for each participant. There was Moderate Overall Evidence for the impact of the social skills training component on the number of interactions students with autism had with their peers during the network meetings. Students with autism, peers without disabilities, and school staff interventionists all rated the intervention favorably. The ASSP was not consistently sensitive enough to detect improvements in social skills for all participants. Implications of the study, as well as limitations and directions for future research, are discussed.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders have a lack of language processing, expressive communication, and social skills. These deficits may impact the ability to function in the general education classroom. The current investigation examined the effects of using video self-modeling with an iPad device to teach inclusion readiness skills to children with autism. The specific group directions that were taught were cleaning up, lining up, and sitting down. Three young children with autism participated in this study. A multiple baseline design across behavior and subjects was used. All three participants reached mastery criteria in all three behaviors. Experimental control was shown with the multiple baseline across subjects. Moreover, experimental control was established with the multiple baseline across behaviors with one of the participants. Due to generalization across behaviors, experimental control was shown with two of the behaviors with a second subject. When video models were discontinued and maintenance probes were conducted, all three children maintained group direction skills. Results showed that the prerequisite classroom skills were effectively taught to children with autism using video self-modeling. The results are discussed in terms of implications for the general education classroom and future research directions.

During video self-modeling, a student is filmed completing a task and then mistakes, prompts, and negative behaviors are edited from the video. When the edited video is viewed by the subject student, the student views a perfect model of him or herself successfully completing the given task. Video self-modeling has been used predominately with participants with autism spectrum disorder. This study is a replication of a previous study in which the effectiveness of video self-modeling and video peer modeling was compared (Sherer, Paredes, Kisacky, Ingersoll, & Schreiman, 2001). Sherer et al. evaluated these procedures with high functioning students with autism using a combined multiple baseline across participants and alternating treatment design. This study differs from Sherer et al.[alpha]s study in its use of participants who have multiple disabilities and low cognitive functioning. The results show that video self-modeling is effective for some participants while video peer modeling is effective for others. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of video modeling (VM) in order to improve conversational skills using on-line instructional modules, self-monitoring, modeling of socially appropriate skills, and provide coaching opportunities within a controlled setting to an adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Using an ABAB Reversal design, direct observations of the participant’s identified target behaviors were collected two times per week during a controlled setting. Overall, data demonstrated that the combined treatment package was effective for improving the frequency of targeted social skills for the participant, including an additional four sessions that were needed to assess acquisition of targeted skills due to the participant graduating from high school and going on a 2-week vacation. Generalization was provided to the participant throughout the study outside of the controlled setting. However, data collection was obtained and scored by the primary researcher and a trained graduate student. In addition to current research this study complements evidence that a combined intervention presented via computer may be a beneficial method for addressing social skill difficulties for individuals with ASD.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effectiveness of using a video modeling teaching strategy coupled with guided practice lesson to teach students on the autism spectrum (ASD) functional social skills. Four students and their parents or guardians elected to participate in this study. Interviews with parents or guardians were conducted to determine student's level of performance in 13 social areas. Students then participated in social instruction using video modeling, particularly using to video "Fitting in and Having Fun", as a key strategy. Video modeling is a teaching strategy that involves watching a video that models a desired behavior then practicing the desired behavior. Field notes were taken by the researcher after each lesson and themes emerged from these notes. Post interviews were given after completing 13 lessons to determine the effectiveness of the strategy and themes emerged from the surveys as well as informal discussions with parents and students. The study determined the follwing: 1) Students with autism respond positively and quickly to the strategy of video modeling and that it is an effective strategy for decreasing undesired social behaviors and increasing desired social behaviors. 2) Parents of students with ASD are seeking effective strategies for teaching social skills that can be easily implemented at home. 3) Students with ASD can depict appropriate social responses when acting out a scene and this activity can help them to further understand social responses in general. 4) Video modeling engages the student through the use of media which can be exceptionally effective when working with students with ASD.
