Book excerpt: Recent data indicate that only 34% of American eighth grade students are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency with academic reading tasks (NCES, 2011). The staggering nature of statistics such as this is even more profound when considering that high level literacy skills combined with mastery of digital texts have become practical requirements for success in secondary education, post-secondary education, and virtually all vocational contexts. Despite this incongruent scenario, little research has been conducted to evaluate instructional methods and reading comprehension strategies with digital texts. To address this critical issue, the present study examined the effects of a metacognitive reading comprehension instructional protocol (STRUCTURE Your Reading (SYR); Ehren, 2008) with eighth grade students using digital texts in a standard social studies classroom in an urban American school setting. The focus of the protocol was on teaching strategies and self-questioning prompts before, during, and after reading. The study employed a randomized controlled design and consisted of three conditions with a total of 4 participating teachers and 124 participating students. The study was conducted over 25 instructional days and two instructional units with 13.83 treatment hours within the standard, social studies classes. Hierarchical ANCOVA analyses revealed that when controlling for pre-test measurements, the comparison and experimental groups performed significantly better than the control group with instructional unit test scores (Unit 2), reading strategy use in all stages of reading (before, during, and after), and self-questioning prompts during reading. Comparison and experimental groups did not significantly differ in these gains, indicating that this instructional protocol is effective with both paper and digital text. These findings suggest that the SYR instructional protocol is effective with secondary students in content area classrooms when using digital text. Furthermore, they suggest that metacognition and reading comprehension strategy instruction are able to be successfully embedded within a content area class and result in academic and metacognitive gains. Clinical implications and future research directions and are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study describes a program designed to improve reading comprehension through the selection, application, and transfer of appropriate reading strategies with both fictional and informational texts. The targeted population consisted of seventh and eighth grade middle school students in a middle-class community in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. The status of the family incomes ranged from low to middle levels. Evidence of the existence of the problem included: student, parent, and teacher surveys, below grade-level scores on the Holt Rinehart Winston Diagnostic Assessment, and failure to meet adequate yearly progress (AYP) state assessment goals. Analysis of probable cause data revealed that students showed a needed improvement in reading comprehension related to the lack of application of reading strategies. Assessments and teams of teachers reported student difficulty in transfer of reading strategies to content area subjects. This may have been due to the absence of explicit instruction for reading strategies, in addition to unwillingness among teachers to work collaboratively in creating opportunities to use the reading strategies across curriculums. A review of the solution strategies suggested by the professional literature, combined with an analysis of the settings of the problem, resulted in a movement to administer explicit instruction of reading strategies to help students select and apply the proper reading strategies while reading fictional and informational texts. Ultimately, the design of this study was to establish ease with reading comprehension and the transfer of life-long reading skills. Post intervention data indicated an increase in the awareness and application of reading comprehension strategies on the post-study assessments; however, observations from each teacher researcher indicated students struggle to recall and consistently apply reading comprehension strategies independently. Furthermore, content area teachers/colleagues confirmed the students' inability to transfer and apply the reading strategies to their curriculum. (Contains 7 tables, 5 figures, and 26 appendixes.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Question: To what degree does focused instruction to improve reading comprehension and note taking strategies improve students' ability to understand an advanced placement textbook as measured by multiple choice test scores. Subquestions: (1) Will Think-Alouds, where the teacher pauses and differentiates pertinent from extraneous information and verbalizes effective reading strategies help students develop effective note taking skills? (2) Will students performing Think-Alouds lead to more effective note taking and improved test scores on unit tests? (3) Will reading comprehension strategies and note taking strategies make students feel more confident with learning information from the textbook? (4) How will students who attend the extra hour and a half weekly sessions compare in attitudinal surveys and formal assessments to AP students who choose not to attend? Research Activities: Context: This intervention was conducted with forty-six 11th grade AP (Advanced Placement) US History students. The intervention was held in my regular classroom but was completed after school in weekly sessions that lasted an hour and a half a piece. All forty-six students who participated attended these meetings for three consecutive weeks. The students were derived from three different sections of my Advanced Placement classes on a volunteer basis. Methods and Data: I quickly realized that while this group of students had decided to challenge themselves by taking an AP course not all of them were ready for the difficult nature of the textbook and high level of reading comprehension that was needed to succeed in the class and on the AP test. I decided to utilize the class's multiple choice tests as an indicator for success in the course and went about creating exercises that would help promote better study strategies and reading comprehension skills. During the hour and a half sessions, students conducted exercises where they analyzed their reading and study strategies and worked in groups to share and learn techniques from their peers. The first activity that students participated in was a study strategy sharing an activity conducted in groups of four where students created a study plan for the upcoming week and shared techniques they utilize with other students. The second and most crucial activity was a process called a think-aloud where students read sections from the textbook in groups of four. They paused every line or so and verbalized their thought process focusing on why information was important or not and connecting the information to other pertinent information. In the regular class session, students took multiple choice tests that were compared to students' past performance as well as the performance of the AP students who chose not to participate in the activity to see if the intervention had a positive effect on test scores. Results: Overall, the intervention proved to be successful on some level given both my main research question and my sub-questions. Overall test scores on the post intervention assessment went down compared to the students' first seven tests, but the scores decreased less than the scores of the students who did not participate in the intervention. The most pronounced success was indicated in the attitudinal survey which showed a widespread increase in confidence levels in tasks associated with reading comprehension, note taking and study skills. Grade Level: 11th grade. Data Collection Methods: Multiple choice tests, observation notes, attitudinal surveys, student work. Curriculum Areas: Advanced Placement United States History. Instructional Approaches: reading comprehension building activities, Peer sharing exercises, goal setting, study strategies.

Book excerpt: Research Question: To what extent does teaching the reading strategy of identifying cause and effect by using a graphic organizer impact my students' comprehension of their history text? Research Activities: This research was conducted in an 11th grade college prep, U.S. History classroom in a large suburban California high school where I am the teacher of record. There are 33 students in the classroom. Four of the students in the class have been re-designated as English Language Proficient. There are also 3 English Language Learners in the class. I chose 4 focus students to look at for the intervention. Each of them has Spanish as a home language. One is English Language Proficient, one was recently re-designated English Language Proficient, and two are still classified as English Language Learners. The intervention took place over a week and a half, from January 20th, 2009 to February 4, 2009. The intervention involved direct instruction, teacher-led whole class work and modeling, paired in-class work, and independent work. The class also did whole-class guided work correction and analysis. I collected several forms of data throughout the intervention. I began the intervention with an attitudinal survey. I also administered a baseline assessment, a mid-intervention quiz, two sets of paired/independent graphic organizers, a final assessment and a final survey. The purpose of this intervention was to determine the effect on students' comprehension of their history text of teaching cause and effect text structure and of utilizing a graphic organizer. Before the intervention, over one-half of my students lacked an awareness or a knowledge of problems they encountered while they read, and over one-half the students couldn't point to any specific strategies they used while reading. After the intervention, based on the analysis of their surveys and an interview with the focus students, nearly the whole class saw value in and an appreciation of how understanding text structure can lead to better reading comprehension. The class average increased from a 76% on the baseline assessment to an 80% on the final assessment. On the final assessment, the students made fewer comprehension-related errors. This indicated that they were using a learned strategy to assist in reading comprehension and that the strategy indeed helped with reading comprehension. Instructional Approaches: Assessment/Evaluation, Class discussion, Cooperative learning, Direct Instruction, Homework, Graphic Organizers/Concept Maps, Reading-Comprehension, Reading-Strategies, Think-alouds.
