Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine and examine the impact of student support services (SSS) on academic success at a historically black college. The study was grounded in the theoretical framework of Astin's Input-Environment-Outcome Model (IEO), Scholssberg's theory of marginality, holistic theory , facilitation theory, and the theory of sensory simulation (Dunn, 2002; Anderson et. al., 2011; Dennick, 2014 and Pritchard, 2013.) A mixed method approach was used to quantify and explicate triangulated data, which included the N-LSSI survey, archival data, and focus group interviews. The N-LSSI survey used a 7-point Likert Scale, and students from The College completed the instrument. The longitudinal nature of the study meant that the assumption of independent observations required by ANOVA was violated. Therefore, I used MANOVA to analyze SSS and Non-SSS student academic achievement data (i.e., GPA, Accuplacer test scores). This analysis also determined whether significant differences existed between the SSS and Non-SSS student participant groups based on means of the predictors. Qualitative data were organized, evaluated, and interpreted using open, axial and selective coding with MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software program. The results of the analyses showed there were no significant differences between the two student groups relative to GPAs. In contrast, Accuplacer math scores, reading scores, and writing scores were significantly different. The retention differences between SSS and Non-SSS students were significant in 2011 and 2012, while graduation data revealed significant differences in 2012. Results from the N-LSSI survey produced no significant difference between SSS and Non-SSS satisfaction with The College, while focus group interviews revealed student satisfaction levels were virtually the same.

According to the American Association of Community Colleges (2010), more than 40% of all African American students enrolled in postsecondary education are enrolled in two-year colleges. A review of the literature indicated that improving persistence and completion rates for African American students is a challenge that two-year colleges face. This study examined whether institutional support services, policies, and programs influenced the completion and graduation of African American students at select Ohio's two-year colleges. The study examined (a) general institutional interventions, such as advising, mentoring, orientation programs and courses, tutoring, and departments or programs that specifically target African American or other underrepresented students, as well as (b) special programs or staffing configurations dedicated to supporting the needs of African American students.

The second section, Voices from the Field focuses on proven classroom and administrative strategies that promote academic achievement among black students from professionals at Spelman College and Morehouse College. Both institutions are members of Phi Beta Kappa and have graduated such significant twentieth century historical figures as Martin Luther King, Jr., Julian Bond, Alice Walker and Marian Wright Edelman. Louis B. Gallien, Jr. is Professor of Urban Education at Regent University. Previously, he taught at Spelman College and held adjunct positions at Morehouse College and Emory University. His areas of speciality are in African American pedagogy, culture and urban education. His monograph on African American males attitudes towards education entitled: "LostVoices: Reflections on Education From An Imperlied Generation, " an examinaton of five distinct high school cultures, was considered to be a ground-breaking study in 1990 and widely-reported in the "Boston Globe, Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Lexington Herald, Essence, Ebony" and journals across the country. Since that time, he has written articles, essays and monographs on hip-hop culture and the framing of values among African American College students, the pedagogical ramifications of W.E.B.DuBois collected works on black college students, and curricular impact of CORE Knowledge on the academic achievement levels of African American middle grade students. Dr. Marshalita Sims Peterson, Ph.D., is chair and assistant professor in the Education Department at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her research includes curriculum development and implementation as it relates to culturally responsive pedagogy, oral communication skills in higher education, and instructional strategies for all children. Her action research facilitated the opening of a charter school in the Atlanta metropolitan area. As an advocate for ensuring that students reach their full potential, Dr. Peterson has presented nationally and internationally on quality education, student achievement, and innovative instruction for all students. She seeks to provide a culture of learning that will enhance educational opportunities through effective academic programming. "
