Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore barriers to access to health care among Latino adults. The independent variables examined in this study were acculturation, socio-economic status, and gender. The dependent variable is access to health care. This study utilized secondary data obtained from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), which included 9,506 Latino adults ages 18 years and above that were interviewed. The results revealed that Latino adults regardless of gender, who reported higher levels of acculturation were more likely to have access to care. In regards to gender, Latino men who reported lower levels of socio-economic status and acculturation presented with greater barriers in access to care compared to women. The findings may be beneficial in providing awareness and increase advocacy efforts among those in the helping professions in order to reduce barriers and increase access to care among Latino adults living in the United States.

Book excerpt: Children of Latino immigrants represents the fastest-growing group in the U.S. public school system, yet they consistently underperform in education when compared to other racial groups. Educational inequities encountered by children of Latino immigrants can be linked to their experience of acculturation. Using data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS), the current study examined the unique impact of various acculturation-related factors on the attitudes toward educational pursuit held by children of Latino immigrant during their adolescence. The moderating role of potential protective factors (i.e., language, cultural orientation, family dynamics) and key demographic characteristics (i.e., socioeconomic status, length of stay in the U.S.) on acculturation stressors (i.e., perceived discrimination) in predicting attitudes toward educational pursuit was investigated. Variation in patterns of relations between acculturation-related factors and educational outcomes was examined across children of Cuban and Mexican immigrant families to understand subgroup differences in adaptation among the greater Latino community. Results indicated parent-child conflict as the most consistent predictor for educational pursuit across Cuban and Mexican respondents. Fluent bilingualism was found to be a significant predictor only for Cuban respondents. Perceived discrimination was found to be significantly interacting with parent-child conflict and foreign language dominance among Cuban respondents. Despite study limitations on selection of respondents and measurement of key acculturation variables, findings provided some support for further investigation in the heterogenous impact of acculturation process on educational pursuit across different Latino groups and implications for intervention on supporting the educational effort of youths from Latino immigrant families.

Book excerpt: Given the equivocal results on the role that acculturation plays in the depressive symptoms among children and adolescents, and the limited research on Mexican American youth in general, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of parent's acculturation and their children's depressive symptoms among Mexican-American of low socio-economic status. This study followed Rodriguez's (2007) methodological recommendations to use a strong methodological design, and use an orthogonal acculturation measurement. The study selected a stratified random sample of 198 students, selecting equal numbers of males and females, and equal subjects from grades 3rd through 5th. Subjects were selected from three elementary schools located in a low socio-economic school district in the Southwestern United States. Parents of the selected students were asked to complete a demographic form, the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Cuellar, Arnold, and Maldonado, 1995), and the Internalizing subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 (CBCL/6-18; Achenbach and Rescorla, 2001). The study found no significant relationship between parent's acculturation and children's depressive symptoms. The study was limited by high attrition among the sample, a frequent characteristic of low socio-economic populations.
