Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if social media has a place within the classroom and can enhance the student's learning experience by tapping into a medium in which they are already comfortable and familiar, and interact with on a daily basis. Social media has the potential to change the overall dynamic of the traditional lecture classroom, opening up new avenues of communication and learning that lecture classes alone are not able to offer. It can enhance the learning of students by promoting a digital learning community. Social media is also a cost effective tool for the institution, as it costs nothing for the faculty or student to join. This study involved assessing 49 nursing students who used social media, or Facebook to be more exact, compared to when they used a traditional online learning platform. A learning community, a place where instructors can be involved in building social presence, which involves instructors and students in a site-based format that helps assist continued collaborative development, was built into the class (Linder, Post, & Calabrese, 2012). Learning communities provide a way for the instructor to provide information to students, and then allows those students to discuss among themselves the subject assigned. A digital learning community may facilitate improvement in the students' online social presence.

The purpose of this study was to measure nursing students' perceived extent of teaching, social and cognitive presence and course satisfaction in an online undergraduate nursing course, and whether relationships and associations existed between the three presences, course satisfaction, student demographic, academic, and technology variables, and selected instructional strategies. The Community of Inquiry theory was the framework used in this descriptive correlational study of RN-BSN students (n= 76). Variables were measured using the Community of Inquiry Survey and the Perceived Student Satisfaction Scale instruments, and a researcher developed survey. Findings indicated students' perceived teaching and cognitive presence were present to a greater extent than social presence. Significant positive correlations (p & lt; .01) were found between teaching and cognitive presence (r =.79), cognitive and social presence (r =.64), teaching and social presence (r =.52), satisfaction and the teaching (r =.77), social (r =.63), and cognitive (r =.52) presences. There were no significant findings associated with age, ethnicity, race, number of online courses taken, expected course grade or GPA and perceptions of the three presences and course satisfaction. There was a significant difference (p d".05) with gender and perceived social presence with male students reporting stronger levels. Students experiencing course technology difficulties reported significantly (p d".05) lower perceptions of teaching presence than those experiencing no difficulty. Significant differences (p d".05) were found between specific course instructional strategies and each presence and course satisfaction. The findings provide faculty with an understanding of online course management and teaching/learning strategies that may increase students' perceptions of presence in online courses and improve student satisfaction with online learning.

While many teaching theories can work online, adaptations need to be made to address issues with retention, persistence, and the immediacy that can arise in computer-mediated communication. Social presence is a strategy that faculty and students can employ to effectively interact in an asynchronous online discussion environment. Students that experience high social presence in a classroom do not feel that the computer-mediated communication is a barrier to their interaction with others, particularly their faculty members. The driving research question for this study was: Is there a difference in final grade, satisfaction, persistence, and retention based on whether faculty demonstrate high levels of social presence cues versus those that demonstrate low levels of social presence cues in online classrooms. This study added to the research on the impact that social presence has on student satisfaction with online faculty, student retention in the online course, student final grade in the online course, and student persistence through to the next online course by examining online classes at a for-profit postsecondary institution that serves primarily non-traditional adult students. Faculty who demonstrated high social presence scores had significantly higher student satisfaction ratings than faculty who had low social presence scores. In addition, faculty who demonstrated a moderate to high amount of social presence had significantly higher student persistence than faculty who had low social presence scores.

As online learning continues to evolve, more research is needed on social presence's contribution to student satisfaction and retention. The purpose of this study was to determine if the element of social presence in online learning has an impact on student satisfaction and retention. The research was also used to support and frame further research on measuring social presence, its relationship with learner satisfaction, and ways to create a more comfortable learning environment and retain learners in online courses. The quantitative and qualitative methods in this study on social presence included collecting data from students and faculty at a consortium of community colleges in Chicago. A survey was deployed to students enrolled in online courses. The survey included questions about students' comfort level with online courses, including online discussions and other technology. The data from the survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The qualitative data were collected during an interview with online faculty members. The interview data were coded, and categories were created using key words from the responses. The data collected from the student survey and the faculty interview helped determine the correlation between social presence and student satisfaction in online learning. The findings indicated that students, for the most part, were satisfied with their online learning experience. Most of the students responded favorably when asked about their comfort level with online discussions, collaboration with other students, and the technology. In the interview, the faculty members noted that although online discussion was one form of connectivity, it was not enough to keep the students engaged. Faculty members recommended that, in addition to online discussions, the inclusion of online groups and synchronous sessions could increase social presence. The data from both the student survey and the faculty interview helped provide recommendations for enhancing the online learning experience.
