Book excerpt: Sudden cardiac arrest, the definition of which according to the American Heart Association, is "the sudden stoppage of the heart causing clinical death", is a direct result of the various forms of heart disease as well as other causes, and has long been a leading killer of man around the world. This research report covers some of the innovations which have been developed in the last 20 years in the battle against this killer. With the advent of pre-hospital emergency medical services and its evolution to the advanced levels of today, the death rate from pre-hospital sudden cardiac arrest can be clearly reduced. The findings of several research studies, two of which are included in this report, show that there is a definite relationship between the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims and the level of EMS service available to them.
