The purpose of this research study was to complete a program evaluation of a district-wide focus on attendance program containing positive practices. The research found that implementing a school-wide focus on attendance, supported at the district level, significantly improved overall yearly average daily attendance at the elementary school level. The school-wide focus on attendance program also significantly decreased the number of days missed by chronically absent students. Parental beliefs regarding the importance of regular school attendance were also examined in this study.

This research study focuses on the positive impact of reliable transportation on regular student attendance. Attendance is an indicator of predicting the students' success, and students with fewer absences have better academic outcomes. Students who ride the school bus are safe and arrive at school on time. Transportation justice aims to address the attendance needs of all students in education equally, regardless of the family income level of place of residence. This research study explores the relationship between reliable school transportation and regular student attendance to identify the potential correlation. The data from an online survey is collected from parents of students K-12 in the greater Sacramento County. Data is further analyzed and computed using the Pearson coefficient, which yields a significant correlation between the two variables. Consequently, the null hypothesis is rejected in favor of the research hypothesis that states students who ride a district bus to school demonstrate a significantly higher attendance rate than those who do not. Practice implications include training opportunities to prepare parents for attendance at district policy meetings and implementing additional community surveys once a year. Policy implications include ballot measures to reinstate funding for school bus service and to develop and implementing new attendance coding to reflect transportation-related absences. One suggestion for a future study is to conduct an expanded data collection through school attendance reporting to study reliable transportation effects on student academic performance.

The study, which followed 25,000 three- and four-year-olds served by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) school-based preschool programs, finds chronic absenteeism is rampant among preschoolers in Chicago. In 2011-2012, almost half of three-year-olds and more than one-third of four-year-olds were chronically absent. This report examines the extent of preschool absenteeism and the reasons preschool students are absent. It also examines the relationship between preschool absences and students' scores on measures of kindergarten readiness in math, letter recognition, and social-emotional development, as well as assessments of second-grade reading fluency. Ultimately, students who miss more preschool have lower kindergarten readiness scores, and students who are chronically absent in preschool are more likely to be chronically absent in kindergarten and have lower second grade reading scores. However, students who enter preschool with the weakest skills benefit the most from regular attendance.

Marginalized, African Canadian, and lower socioeconomic students are the most affected. Through a mixed-methods approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research involving 313 students in a survey component and 40 students in 6 focus groups, the researcher explores the antecedents behind student absenteeism and disengagement from the learning process. Specific questions relating to student in-school experiences, thoughts and feelings, the impact of teacher attitudes, expectations and biases, and peer influence during critical educational stages in students' lives, produced contextually relevant opinions and observations from the students themselves. This is important as most research on school "drop outs" has omitted the salience of students' voices. Resultant themes derived from this study indicate the following implicating factors: (a) school leadership, (b) school culture and environment, (c) curriculum, (d) teacher attitude and expectations, and (e) peer pressure. The interplay of these influences causes either student engagement or disengagement which in turn affects student attendance. It is apparent from the research that the school in general and teachers specifically, either negatively or positively influence students, which suggests that both teachers and school administrators can help students improve their attendance, and thus their academic performance by establishing positive and influential relationships with them. This would have a profound effect on whether students succeed or fail. Study findings indicate that teaching pedagogy, a curriculum relevant to student life experiences, and a more hospitable and equitable school environment are crucial to whether a student becomes bored or passionate about learning. Changes to all three are essential, and recommendations are given in this regard.
