Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Masters, Addis Ababa University (National bank of ethiopia), language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this paper was to identify the root causes of the problems and challenges faced by Ethiopian microfinance sector and to, subsequently, recommend remedial measures. In depth interviews have been used to identify and understand the problems and challenges faced by microfinance institutions. This study depicted that Primary cause for all problems is fund shortage and; in turn, the primary cause for fund shortage is insufficient start up equity capital. In addition, ownership structure is identified as supplementary cause of governance problems. Finally, it is recommended that solving these couple of problems is a must to overcome all challenges of the sector as taking measures on other problems is unlikely to provide long-lasting relief from the undesired effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance has long been considered a development strategy that can correct the failure of the global credit market and address the financial needs of the poor enabling them to create and run profitable business enterprises. The Microfinance Mirage argues that this neo-liberal oriented analysis overemphasises the economic argument whilst ignoring the cultural roots of inequality and subordination. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted among rural credit clients in the Northern region of Ethiopia, Esayas Bekele Geleta provides a nuanced critical analysis of microfinance challenging the common assumption that it facilitates the building of social capital, poverty reduction and the empowerment of women. Making a unique contribution to our further understanding of the microfinance industry the research shows that, in some cases, microfinance can result in the disintegration of pre-existing relationships and in the disruption and destruction of the livelihoods of the poor. Exploring the impact of microfinance in one of the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa, this book demonstrates its potential and problems and shows the complex and contradictory social and cultural environments in which projects are often located.

This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the optimal size and composition of Rural Financial Cooperatives (RFCs)? With this broad question in mind, we characterize alternative formation of RFCs and their implications in improving the access of rural households to financial services, including savings, credit, and insurance services. We find that some features of RFCs have varying implications for delivering various financial services. The size of RFCs is found to have a nonlinear relationship with the various financial services RFCs provide. We also show that compositional heterogeneity among members, including diversity in wealth, is associated with higher access to credit services, while this has little implication on households’ savings behavior. Similarly, social cohesion among members is strongly associated with higher access to financial services. These empirical descriptions suggest that the optimal size and composition of RFCs may vary across the domains of financial services they are designed to facilitate. This evidence provides suggestive insights on how to ensure financial inclusion among smallholders, a pressing agenda and priority of policy makers in developing countries, including Ethiopia. The results also provide some insights into rural microfinance operations which are striving to satisfy members’ demand for financial services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance encompasses a broad range of financial services targeted at low income individuals seeking to build income and assets. There has been extensive research on the role of microfinance institutions (henceforth "MFIs") in developing countries on poverty reduction, particularly for female clients. In contrast, research on MFIs operating within the United States is more limited. This study seeks to fill this gap in the literature and is one the first to focus on the impact of an MFI on female clients in the US using data from a Philadelphia-based MFI. The study examined the factors affecting outcomes of female entrepreneurs as compared to their male counterparts measured by changes in financial capability, repayment history, household incomes, and sustainability. Although the study does not statistically support the existence of differences between the outcomes for female and male clients of the MFI, the data does indicate positive outcomes for the clients. The business survival rates on average are above national indicators. The personal credit scores for MFI clients reflect improvement subsequent to receiving loans. This study utilized survey instruments and a focus group study to identify barriers to the success of female entrepreneurs. Noted barriers such as lack of access to capital, lack of relevant business knowledge provide a foundation for future research study.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Livelihoods are ‘means of making a living’, the various activities and resources that allow people to live. It comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social) and activities required for a means of living. Thus, microfinance programs have been considered as one of the main instruments in livelihood improvement in recent development agenda. Microfinance comprises the provision of financial services including credit and other facilities like savings, insurance, and transfer services to poor household. The study was conducted in Geniji-Dalecho and Bulbulo kebeles among 35 target kebeles of the OCSSCO. The main objective of the study is to identify the contribution of OCSSCO in improving household livelihood through providing credit. Further, the study used both primary and secondary data sources. The primary data was collected with semi-structured interview and focus group discussion from sampled respondents; whereas, secondary data gathered from different documents of the microfinance institution that exists in the study area. Stratified random sampling was used to select 60 respondents (35 beneficiaries and 25 non-beneficiaries) based on the principle of probability proportional to size (pps). Generally, Microfinance Institutions have an explicit potential that intends to improve the livelihoods of households. While improving livelihood, microfinance (OCSSCO) credit service increases the income of the clients; which, in turn, enable them educating their children and improves their nutritional status. Inferential statistics such as crosstabs; independent sample t-test and custom table are used in data analysis. Descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were employed to analyze the data. Chi-square (for categorical variables) and t-test (for continuous variables) were used to see the significance of the relationships of independent variables with dependent variables. Moreover, the qualitative data was analyzed by describing, summarizing and interpreting for further clarity. Finally, conclusion and recommendation were made based on the findings obtained from result and discussion. Key words: assets, client, role, microfinance institution, livelihood,
