Book excerpt: Research has revealed that a significant achievement gap is present between Hispanic and White students (Aud & Hammes, 2011). The extant literature on the math achievement of Hispanic students has attempted to explain the factors responsible for this underachievement including the influence parents have on the academic achievement of their children. The purpose of this study was to examine how three types of maternal parenting styles were related to Hispanic high school students’ math performance. Additionally, the study examined the mediating effects of goal orientations, self-efficacy, and use of metacognitive strategies on the relationship of maternal parenting styles and students’ math performance. The sample was comprised of Hispanic high school students (N = 312) who were enrolled in either Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II. Associations between maternal parenting styles, goal orientations, self-efficacy, use of metacognitive strategies, and math performance were quantified using mediation analyses based on the principles of Baron and Kenny’s (1986) causal steps approach. Results of the multiple regression analyses indicated that all three parenting styles predicted students’ math performance with permissive having a negative effect on math scores. Authoritarian positively predicted both mastery-avoidance and performance-approach goal orientations. Authoritative positively predicted mastery-approach, while permissive positively predicted performance-avoidance and negatively predicted mastery-avoidance. Both authoritative and permissive styles positively predicted self-efficacy and metacognitive strategies. Results also confirmed the performance-approach orientation as a mediator between the authoritarian parenting style and math performance. The relationship between the authoritative parenting style and math performance was mediated by the mastery-approach goal orientation. Mediation effects were confirmed with post-hoc Sobel tests. Limitations and practical implications for these findings were discussed.

Book excerpt: Use of learning strategies has been found to be one of the most important predictors of academic achievement, which makes the assessment of learning strategy use crucial. The first purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S (Dowson & McInerney, 2004) with 8th grade students. The learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S items assess students' use of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies. This study also examined the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement. The data were collected from 399 eight grade students near the end of 2018-2019 academic year. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate the psychometrics properties of the GOALS-S. Following the CFA, the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement was examined by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results obtained from this study provided evidence for validity and reliability of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S. The data supported the hypothesized six-factor model with minor modifications. The results of the structural model indicated that learning strategy use had a direct impact on mathematics achievement. Also, self-efficacy for self-regulated had direct effect on mathematics achievement, as well as indirect effect on mathematics achievement mediated by learning strategy use. Discussion of the findings, implications for teachers, policy makers, and researchers, and limitations and future directions are presented.

The study was conducted in Istanbul and Ankara, two largest cities of Turkey. Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) were used. By using Linear Stepwise Regression and MANOVA, some important resuts were reached. One of these results is that the combined effect of three predictor variables (school type, self-efficacy and intrinsic goal orientation) on students' mathematics achievement was significant. In other words, school type, self-efficacy and intrinsic goal orientation are important in mathematics achievement.

Book excerpt: There is emerging research that has been exploring how parents with math anxiety engage with their children, and the resulting impact on student math anxiety and performance in middle and high school grades. In response to the paradigm shift of increased parental involvement with home-based math support and home-schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of this transference had become a concern to educators. This research looked at the effectiveness of a school outreach program to help mitigate the anxiety level of parents, help parents define their roles at home, and promote more effective parental involvement with the goal of better mathematical outcomes for students. Invitations were sent to 192 sixth-grade parents in a suburban Connecticut middle school to participate in a Family Math Night event with the stated purpose of addressing student success in middle school mathematics. Parents and their children completed pre- and post-surveys over a five-week period to monitor parents’ math anxiety levels in their role providing math support, students’ math anxiety levels, and students’ perceived frequency of parental support. Despite the relatively small parent sample size, there was a statistically significant reduction in parental anxiety levels in providing help and identifying their role in home-based math support at the end of the five-week investigation. Student results were inconclusive but may have benefitted from a longer observation period.
