Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the long-standing Canada-U.S. lumber trade dispute and the current pressure on the world's forests as a renewable energy source, much attention has been directed toward the modelling of international trade in wood products. Two types of trade models are described in this book: one is rooted in economic theory and mathematical programming, and the other consists of two econometric/statistical models--a gravity model rooted in theory and an approach known as GVAR that relies on time series analyses. The purpose of the book is to provide the background theory behind models and facilitate readers in easily constructing their own models to analyse policy questions that they wish to address, whether in forestry or some other sector. Examples in the book are meant to illustrate how models can be used to say something about a variety of issues, including identification of the gains and losses to various players in the North American softwood lumber business, and the potential for redirecting sales of lumber to countries outside the United States. The discussion is expanded to include other products besides lumber, and used to examine, for example, the effects of log export restrictions by one nation on all other forestry jurisdictions, the impacts of climate policies as they relate to the global forest sector, and the impact of oil prices on forest product markets throughout the world. This book will appeal to practising economists and researchers who wish to examine various policies that affect international trade, whether their interest is local or international in scope. Because the book provides the theoretical bases underlying various models, students and practitioners will find this a valuable reference book or supplementary textbook.
Book Synopsis Impact of Forestry Activity on the Economy of Canada and Its Provinces by : Romain Jacques
Download or read book Impact of Forestry Activity on the Economy of Canada and Its Provinces written by Romain Jacques and published by Economics Branch, Canadian Forestry Service. This book was released on 1988 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study using Statistics Canada input-output models to estimate the economic activity generated by processing of the forest into consumer goods. The 1979 interprovincial model was used to estimate the impact of forestry activity in each of the provinces, while the 1980 national model was used to estimate the impact on Canada as a whole. The models helped estimate the impact of forestry activity on some 200 different sectors of the economy in output levels (dollars), jobs, and gross domestic product (in dollars). As well, the impact of forest produce exports is presented. A brief methodology is included.

Book Synopsis Canada-United States Trade in Forest Products by : Russell S. Uhler
Download or read book Canada-United States Trade in Forest Products written by Russell S. Uhler and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the major economic and political factors that have led to the development of a particular pattern of trade in forest products, and it examines and compares the legal structures within which this trade takes place. Standard economic and political methods of analysis are used to study the history of this trade, including such recent developments as the Free Trade Agreement. Several of the chapters focus on two recent trade disputes involving Canadian exports of shakes and shingles and of softwood lumber to the United States. These disputes are instructive for understanding not only the politics of trade but also important economic issues such as the measurement and impact of timber subsidies. In addition, the authors consider the factors affecting foreign market share, and the burden of tariffs and export taxes.

Download or read book Evolving Patterns in the Production and Trade of Canadian Forest Products written by Robert G. Prins and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper briefly examines Canada's production of forest products between 1961 and 1989, and analyzes Canada's evolving forest product trade patterns since 1970. A constant market share methodology is used to analyze export patterns of Canadian forest products. Within each of four product categories (lumber, wood panels, wood pulp, and paper products) Canadian production is noted in three ways: percent share relative to global production; percent share within each type of forest product; and annual compound growth rates. Changes in exports are attributed to four factors: market share, commodity mix, market mix, and an adaptation effect.

Book Synopsis The Domestic and Global Context of the Forest Industry by :
Download or read book The Domestic and Global Context of the Forest Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this note are to examine the domestic and global context within which the Canadian forest industry operates and to identify those factors that have the greatest impact on economic activity in that industry. The review of the domestic context includes examination of the contribution that the forest industry makes to the national economy and the regional production structure of the industry (forest resources, input/output mixes). Discussion of the global context considers historical, current, future, and geographical trade patterns. Five major factors impacting the industry are discussed: trade barriers, both tariff and non-tariff; trade agreements; exchange rate fluctuations, especially with regard to the US dollar; the availability of substitute fibre sources; and stricter environmental regulations.
