Book excerpt: The Auto ID (Automatic Identification) technology is a technology that permits to identify supply chain entities (pallets, cases or individual units) by means of a RF (Radio Frequency) tag. The RF tag contains an identification code, the EPC (Electronic Product Code) which is associated with each entity individually.ln our research, we are interested in identifying the potential benefits stemming from the utilization of this technology in a supply chain through a qualitative study and to quantify one of the identified benefits, namely the improvement in the reliability of data relative to inventory level, through a mono period Newsboy inventory model. ln the first part of our work, we characterise the potential impact of the use of this technology in supply chains. The application of the technology modifies Jhe CUITent logistics processes and provides other new functionalities. So, its adoption in the industry has multiple consequences, such as: a reduction of operating costs due to the automation of the product identification and data capture process, a better management of inventory due to a higher visibility of entities stored within a warehouse, a better traceability of entities in the whole of the supply chain (e.g. returned products, after sales service, recycled products). ln the second part, we develop a Newsboy type inventory model that enables to quantify benefits and provides a better understanding of the Auto ID technology as well as the cost benefit trade-off associated with its implementation.

Book excerpt: Most of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems currently use manual entry or mass upload methods to enter data collected from warehouse operations. These methods are highly unreliable and prone to manual error affecting the data accuracy. Data accuracy and accurate real-time data are required by businesses for many critical decisions. Unreliable data becomes invalid and have a negative performance impact on ERP systems that can lead to economic loss to the organization. Automatic Identification (Auto-ID) technologies are used to track and collect data in real time or near real time. They can be integrated into ERP systems automatically to provide live updates without human intervention thereby reducing the data's inconsistency and increasing timeliness. In this research we hypothesize that by integrating Auto ID technologies, namely RFID and barcodes, into an ERP system that the data accuracy and reliability would be increased significantly by utilizing live data updates. The research begins with identifying the variables affecting the ERP data accuracy by interviewing the business ERP and warehouse users. Then a survey was conducted among, ERP specialists and users, and warehouse specialists and users from an oil company, to collect their perceived impact of these variables on the ERP data accuracy. A Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model was developed to explain the effect of these variables on the ERP data accuracy. The model was improved by developing a model with better predictor variables. The economic impact of the implementing Auto ID with the ERP system on the data accuracy was then simulated for a variety of accuracy levels for a single product line. Our results were that a known group of experts, including data entry clerks and programmers, determined that Auto ID technologies improve ERP systems data accuracy and that the Return on Investment determined by Net Present Value (NPV) analysis indicates savings would be significant.

Book excerpt: This thesis aims to add knowledge that contributes to answering the question of how digital transformation technologies can contribute to increasing customer value in logistics and supply chain management (L&SCM), and how manufacturing companies can mindfully use them. The output of the thesis is an architectural framework that proposes performance components, approaches and methodologies that can help in capturing this customer value. To build the basis for such a framework, this research first deduces and presents the underlying definition of digital transformation and describes its potential for, as well as current barriers for its application in, L&SCM. The study uses a systematic literature review to identify nine underlying digital transformation technology bundles. These are: auto-identification technologies; information and communication technologies; the cloud; cyber physical systems; analytics; distributed ledger; automation technologies; augmented and virtual reality; and additive manufacturing. These technologies served as inputs for a nominal group technique workshop aiming to conceptualize the dimensions of customer value based on the technologies. The derived dimensions are information disclosure, time, product/production, service/assistance, quality, choice options, and planning. Based on these findings, this thesis presents an impact assessment for customer-based L&SCM performance. The three-plus-one customer value propositions are availability, servitization, co-creation, and cognition as enhancement. Expert interviews provide the data for the architectural framework for capturing customer value based on digital transformation technologies in L&SCM. The six dimensions covered are the customer value proposition; the value portfolio; scope of collaboration; human resource management and organization; performance management; as well as the (re-)adjusting value assessment. The main scientific contribution lies in conceptualizing the customer value for L&SCM based on digital transformation technologies whereas the architectural framework constitutes the main practical contributions. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Frage zu beantworten, wie digitale Transformationstechnologien dazu beitragen und bewusst eingesetzt werden können, um den Kundennutzen in Logistik und Supply Chain Management (L&SCM) von produzierenden Unternehmen zu erhöhen. Das Ergebnis ist ein architektonischer Rahmen, der Leistungskomponenten, Ansätze und Methoden vorschlägt, wie dieser Kundenmehrwert erfasst und umgesetzt werden kann. Um die Grundlage für das Framework zu schaffen, leitet diese Arbeit zunächst die zugrunde liegende Definition für digitale Transformation ab und beschreibt deren Potentiale sowie die aktuellen Barrieren für L&SCM. Die relevanten neun digitalen Transformationstechnologiebündel werden auf Basis einer systematischen Literaturanalyse identifiziert. Es handelt sich um Technologien zur automatischen Identifizierung, Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien, Cloud, cyberphysikalische Systeme, Analytics, Distributed Ledger, Automatisierungstechnologien, Augmented und Virtual Reality sowie Additive Fertigung.
