Both art therapy and wilderness challenge programs are currently being widely used for treatment of a wide spectrum of the population Klorer (1992) states that art therapy has a useful place in wilderness challenge programs. The Wilderness Stress Challenge Program (WSCP) of St. Louis, Missouri in which Klorer has studied, is unique in that it utilizes art therapy as a daily component of it's three month summer program for adolescents. The WSCP uses art therapy and wilderness training to address the following treatment issues: (1) development of trust in others; (2) enhancement of self-esteem in the participants; (3) empowerment of the participants; (4) development of a sense of responsibility; (5) and group cohesiveness. The stress challenges used at the WSCP include the following: (1) low and high ropes courses; (2) a caving experience; (3) rock climbing and rappelling; (4) camping; (5) and the "solo" experience.
