Book excerpt: This mixed methods study sought to examine student perceptions of the impact of an alternative intervention program (AIP), and provide a framework meant to inspire programs in other locations. Focusing on attendance, discipline, and academic achievement data, this study examined what factors motivate successful alternative education students to succeed upon their return to the comprehensive setting, and identify support factors that foster resiliency. Qualitative data were collected through three focus groups of students who were either new to the program, enrolled in the program for at least a nine-week period, and students who successfully completed a nine-week placement. Six adult students who completed the program and received a high school diploma were in-depth interview participants. Quantitative data were collected using student records. Results indicated differences in the students' perception of grades earned and the actual grades received. Students were able to maintain their attendance, grades, and discipline during the alternative program enrollment, but scored lower in English and Mathematics after leaving the program than they did prior to attending the program. The fast pace and rigor of a standards-based curriculum in a comprehensive setting proved challenging for students in need of a caring, nurturing environment that offered individualized instruction. Students overwhelmingly attribute their success in the alternative program to a caring staff, and flexible scheduling within a structured environment. This study revealed the need for a more structured process to transition students from the alternative to comprehensive settings. Students could literally be in the alternative setting today and in the comprehensive setting tomorrow, with very little support or guidance. This led to repeated disciplinary offenses and for some students, their return to the alternative setting.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods action research study investigated teacher-perceived consequences of the implementation of the Focused Support Program (FSP), a middle school alternative education program that sought to improve the academic performance of students at risk for failing multiple subjects. The FSP emphasized inclusion; students participated in co-taught mainstream classes in addition to alternative-students-only support classes. Student report card grades and disciplinary referrals were analyzed to determine whether they supported teacher perceptions. Four teachers from a suburban middle school bordering a city in the northeastern United States were interviewed and reported five positive and three negative consequences of FSP implementation. Positive consequences were reported as collaborative opportunities for teachers who instruct FSP students, increased classroom support, increased parental contact, improved academic performance, and positive relationships that developed between staff and students. Negative consequences were related to the degree of notoriety FSP students received from school staff, student individualized support, and different program expectations between FSP teachers and parents. Twenty-five FSP students from the same middle school formed the overall student sample, but the number of students included in each comparison varied according to individual participation in the area of analysis. Book excerpt: We use statewide administrative data from Florida to estimate the impact of attending public schools with different grade configurations on student achievement through grade 10. To identify the causal effect of structural school transitions, we use student fixed effects and instrument for middle and high school attendance based on the terminal grade of the school attended in grades 3 and 6, respectively. Consistent with recent evidence from other settings, we find that students moving from elementary to middle school in grade 6 or 7 suffer a sharp drop in student achievement in the transition year. We confirm that these achievement drops occur in nonurban areas and persist through grade 10, by which time most students have transitioned into high school. We also find that middle school entry increases student absences and is associated with higher grade 10 dropout rates. Transitions to high school in grade nine cause a smaller one-time drop in achievement but do not alter students' performance trajectories. (Contains 13 tables, 6 figures and 13 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of alternative middle school programs utilizing a longitudinal, mixed methods design and was driven by research questions which analyzed trends in attendance, discipline, and Standard of Learning test pass rates in history and science for 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. It also examined student perceptions concerning preparedness for high school, skills previously taught, transition to high school, and relationships with peers and adults. Data on attendance, discipline, and SOL scores were collected from 34 students from the 2009-2010 8th grade cohort who attended one of two alternative middle schools. Attendance data indicated a decrease in the number of absences each year from 8th -10th grade, ranging from two days to 53 days per student. Discipline data reflected a drop in discipline referrals, each year, from 8th to 10th grade. The greatest improvement in discipline, indicated by a decrease in per student referrals, occurred between 9th and 10th grade. History SOL results indicated a pass rate that remained between 70% - 71% for grades 8-10. The test results for the science SOL showed a drop in number of students passing from 8th to 9th grade and increasing from 9th to 10th grade. An analysis of interviews with twelve students found that they perceived their alternative middle experience as having a positive effect on relationships, both with peers and adults, and a desire to graduate. They attributed an improvement in relationship skills and ability to select positive relationships with alternative middle school attendance. Students consistently noted small class size, as experienced in the alternative middle school, as an influence on both behavior and achievement. Students previously considering dropping out of school felt their alternative middle school experience had contributed to their changed mindsets and goals. Overall this study indicated that students attending the alternative middle school for 8th grade perceived their experiences as providing greater social rather than academic preparation for high school. In addition, best practices are similar for high school and middle school alternative programs.
