Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of acculturation, socioeconomic status, depression, and insurance coverage on the delays in receiving mental health services among Asian Americans sixty years old and older. The data for the study was collected from 913 elderly Asian Americans who had responded to the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), in 2005. The independent variables were acculturation, socioeconomic status, depression, and insurance coverage for mental health services. The dependent variable was the delays on receiving mental health services. The results of the regression analysis determined that acculturation, socioeconomic status, and depression did not delay Asian Americans from utilizing mental health services. Although, there was a significant relationship between having insurance coverage and delays in receiving mental health services, Asian Americans who had insurance, also had access to seeking and receiving mental health treatment. To get a more comprehensive understanding of mental health issues in the Asian American community, more research would have to examine the impact of stigma and the cultural norms that prevent Asian Americans from seeking treatment.

Data were obtained from 33,187 adults ages 18-64 who were interviewed in the 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The independent variables utilized in this study were socio-economic status, acculturation, and coverage for mental health. The dependent variable was difficulties/delays in getting mental health treatment. The result of the study indicated that educational attainment was the only variable in the model that was significant in predicting delays in getting mental health treatment. Education can help increase people's knowledge and enable them to make better-informed choices among the health related options for themselves and their families, including those related to obtaining and managing their mental health needs. As professional social workers, we need to empower this population to create positive changes in their lives.

In 2001, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services made it their priority to work toward eliminating mental health disparities, reducing barriers, and improving access to mental health treatment. Unfortunately in 2012, Sue, Cheng, Saad, and Chu reported little progress in eliminating disparities in access to mental health services for the Asian American population. Their report concluded that the role of acculturation-related factors related to help-seeking attitudes requires further research. The current study used a meta-analytic methodology to investigate acculturation and enculturation-related factors that may be related with help-seeking attitudes. This meta-analytic approach is of particular significance, as the overall magnitude of the relationship between acculturation help-seeking attitudes has been inconsistent in existing research. This study examined the relationship of the predictor variables: acculturation and enculturation, with the outcome variable, help-seeking attitudes. Results indicated a minimal relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes. Ethnic subgroup differences were identified which may account for the heterogeneity of the relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes in prior research. Results also indicated a significant negative relationship between enculturation and help-seeking attitudes. The enculturation-related variables of stigma toward mental health, loss of face, and filial piety were negatively correlated with help-seeking attitudes. Enculturation did not moderate the relationship between acculturation and help-seeking attitudes suggesting a bilinear process of acculturation. Additionally, generational status was a significant predictor of help-seeking attitudes. These findings may prove to be important targets for outreach intervention efforts aimed at increasing psychological help-seeking attitudes among Asian Americans. Implications, limitations, and future directions for research are discussed. Keywords : Asian American, acculturation, enculturation, help-seeking attitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how the migration experience affects the mental health status of recent Asian and Latin American/Caribbean immigrants. It analyzes the relationship between stress among immigrants and their adaptation patterns. Specifically, this study focuses on the psycho-social transition processes associated with migration, examining how disruption of cultural norms, and restructured lifestyle may lead to stress, or other mental health difficulties. In addition, this study highlights "transnationalism," a newly defined adaptation pattern of recent immigrants, especially among Latin immigrants. It focuses on "transnational activity" as a potential mediator of the relationship between immigration stressors and mental health outcomes among recent migrants from Asia and Latin America/Caribbean countries. Previous research has been largely dedicated to two aspects of immigrants' mental health status, post-traumatic stress disorder and acculturative related stress. This study includes both aspects, focusing on both the context of exit and the context of reception to analyze the factors associated with immigrants' mental health problems. Based on previous research, this study incorporates various theories and concepts, including stress theory, acculturation theory, the life course perspective and transnationalism to establish a synthetic model to explain mental health problems. Using the first wave data from New Immigrant Survey, this study includes a broad range of variables, employs logistic regression to examine the effects of pre-migration experiences and post-migration trajectories on symptoms of depression and distress among Asian and Latin American/Caribbean immigrants. Statistical results show that in general Asian immigrants have slightly better mental health than Latino/Caribbean immigrants. Socioeconomic status, gender, pre-migration persecution, social support, acculturation, transnationalism, and sub-ethnicity all predict symptoms of depression among immigrants with the exception of the age at arrival in the U.S. The effects of factors examined in this study vary slightly across ethnic groups. Future research should use longitudinal data in order to track the long-term effects and the patterns of immigrants' incorporation and their mental health status. In addition, the development of more synthetic theories and key concepts are suggested to better understand how the post migration trajectories of each sub-ethnic group within Asian and Latino/Caribbean immigrants' populations are related with their mental health status.
